While beautiful, Yellowstone National Park is one of the most geologically active sites in the U.S. A supervolcano eruption, which could blanket the U.S. in a thick smog of ash, has not occurred in 640,000 years, but recent quakes have scientist on high alert. The quakes themselves could also pose a threat.  (Source: Corbis/Discovery Channel)
Could Yellowstone's quakes lead to an eruption or could the quakes themselves pose a threat?

Scientists at Yellowstone National Park are carefully monitoring a series of recent quakes, but insist that there is current no reason to believe that the area is going to blow.  Yellowstone, home to famous geysers and hot springs, is among the most geologically active sites in the continental U.S.

Massive eruptions have already occurred three times at Yellowstone, 2.1 million, 1.3 million and 640,000 years ago.  The last eruption sent 240 cubic miles of debris and ash into the air, enough to block out the sun over the continental U.S. for a prolonged period of time and cause extinction of species.  A new eruption could one day blanket the U.S. in a choking cloud of ash.

Scientists have observed over the past several decades a gradual swelling of the Yellowstone caldera of approximately 0.6 inches per year, indicating magma pressure.  Over the last three years, the rate of swelling has increased dramatically to approximately 3 inches per year.

Spooked by the swelling magma, many are fearful that a series of recent quakes which have rocked the region are a precursor to an eruption.  Not necessarily so, say scientists.  They say that the earthquakes are not induced by magma, but rather by hydrothermal fluids, and are thus not a predictor of eruptions.  Still they are closely monitoring the quakes for fear that they could trigger an eruption.

The largest quake storm appeared in 1985, with over 3,000 quakes over several months.  The current swarm and the 1983 swarm are classed as "small swarms" as they consist of less than 1,000 quakes.  The 1983 swarm consisted of 70 some quakes, while the ongoing current swarm has seen 250+ quakes.

Robert Smith, a professor of geophysics at the University of Utah says that while quakes and quake swarms are a fact of life at Yellowstone, the very short period over which these quakes have occurred has scientists on high alert.  Scientists are watching Yellowstone carefully for the sudden dramatic changes in earth shape or the release of smoke which could indicate an eruption is imminent.

Professor Smith describes the recent quakes saying, "They're certainly not normal.  We haven't had earthquakes in this energy or extent in many years."

The strongest quake thus far in the current swarm has been 3.8 in magnitude.  A magnitude of 4 is sufficient to produce moderate damage to surrounding structures.  Says Professor Smith, "This is an active volcanic and tectonic area, and these are the kinds of things we have to pay attention to.  We might be seeing something precursory.  Could it develop into a bigger fault or something related to hydrothermal activity? We don't know. That's what we're there to do, to monitor it for public safety."

The quakes have been occurring primarily centered on the northwest end of Yellowstone Lake.

Even if fears that an eruption is impending go unrealized, the quakes themselves could pose a danger.  In 1959 a 7.5 magnitude quake near Hebgen Lake triggered a landslide, which killed 28 people.

Depending on the size of the eruption, it most certainly would block out sunlight globally.

The year Tambora exploded in Indonesia it was known in England as "the year without a summer", and a supervolcanic eruption would be at least 10 times larger than this.

I suppose you also dont know that the current calendar we go by was changed during the 12th century or so. so unless someone transcribed the date and did some homework, that date is very wrong.

RE: I dunno about you guys

That date was based off the Mayan calendar, which has absolutely nothing to do with the Gregorian calendar.

Well actually, if you do some research, the Mayans weren't the only ones to predict a 2012 date as the "end of the world" - the different cultures that predicted December 21, 2012, are spread across the globe. The ones that I know off the top of my head are the Mayans, Aztecs, Incas, Egyptians and the Chinese. Somehow I have this hunch that all 5 of those civilizations weren't using the same calendar, which means the dates must have already been transcribed to our current calendar. Thank you for playing, please try again later. :)

> "Well actually, if you do some research, the Mayans weren't the only ones to predict a 2012 date as the "end of the world""

Actually no one-- not even the Mayans themselves-- predicted 2012 as the end of the world. The date is simply the end of a cycle on the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. There's no evidence the Mayans believed that to be a cataclysmic event, and the tinfoil-hat types suggesting that other civilizations also predicted an apocalypse at the same time are wildly misinformed.

Well if all the major food production areas of the planet failed due to a lack of sunlight over a summer, then once supplies ran out people would begin starving, people would fight each other for food and out of desperation, and this would be worldwide. If the effects lasted another summer, you could be looking at a good 50% of humanity dying out, maybe 95%. Sure, you could get yourself room of rice, grain, lentils and beans, but that's no good for you when your neighbour has shot you and has human curry with rice for dinner.

Basically, if this thing explodes, get in the car and go to the supermarket (before everybody else catches on), and buy a couple of years worth of supplies. Then get enough wood and nails to secure your house (when this become necessary). Never mind all the other survival equipment necessary. In the best case you'll end up with a lot of food. In the worst case, you may survive.

Geothermal and Nuclear power would satisfy our horticulture needs for synthetic light and hydroponic crops. It's the 21st century -- the sun is nice, but not absolutely neccessary for food production. I'd be more concerned about the environmental impact on health, but that would be addressed after the initial fallout with carbon-based gas masks to allow people to roam outside until the dust settles.

Haven't you seen teh Matrix?

> "Geothermal and Nuclear power would satisfy our horticulture needs for synthetic light and hydroponic crops"

Those plants take years to construct, as would the massive greenhouses needed for the crops. We wouldn't have that much warning. You're right that mankind wouldn't go extinct...but a huge percentage of the population would certainly die. Civil unrest alone would wipe out billions.

How long will they take to build in a world already plunged into panic and darkness by such an event, with the dominant superpower mostly destroyed and burning. Money would become useless overnight and civilisation would collapse. Building geothermal plants and massive indoor hydroponic plants that can feed 1 in 10 people, never mind everybody, would be out of the question.

Now if someone had the foresight to build these things, then it would be fine. It won't happen though. Not for something that is still pretty unlikely in our lifetimes.

RE: I dunno about you guys
By rudolphna on 1/6/2009 12:16:07 PM , Rating: 3
Uh... No. The ash leaves the volcano and is spewed tens of thousands of feet up, where it hits the jet stream. That is a huge river of air moving at several hundred MPH if I remember from science class right. The ash would be carried to the east by the jet stream and high level air currents, within weeks carrying it completely around the globe.

RE: I dunno about you guys
By Kefner on 1/6/2009 1:58:17 PM , Rating: 3
I know exactly what the jet stream is. I meant what I said more as a joke though, comparing the amount of energy released from that kind of volcano to that of the jet stream. (hence my little smiley at the end) Now I am no scientist, but I believe that kind of explosion would blanket that entire atmosphere regardless of the jet stream. Now the jet stream may help it cover the entire world quicker, but it's going to happen regardless.

Actually you couldn't be further from the truth and trust me -- I wish your statement was correct, I really do.

A supervolcano (not just from Yellowstone - though its the one getting the most attention -- there are at least a half dozen possible supervolcanoes around the world) according to even conservative scientific calculations would at worse be the end for humanity and all life as we know it or at least would come close to wiping out the human race.

Trillions (yes that's not a typo) of metric tons worth of volcanic ash is one some projections of a yellowstone super volcanic eruption would eject (miles btw) straight up into the atmoshpere. The Earth's climate and own natural weather conditions would circulate the ash across the globe. Sunlight would indeed be blocked out enough to impact food supply, among other things. Think of anything that requires ventilation to work properly w/o overheating -- yeah that would all be clogged, equipment would be shorting out left and right, generators shorting possibly causing fires everywhere, then naturally for about a thousand miles from ground zero of the ejection site it would be pretty much nothing by fire both from direct contact with lava, and the (there's a name for it I forget what it is now) lava rocks blasting out of the volcano like mini-fireballs for hundreds of miles..then of course just from the fire spreading as fire does.

To add to this, look at this picture from Mount St. Helen's
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1980_Mount_st_he...

The ash doesn't just magically stop at the Canada/US border like some would think, it goes up into Canada as well.

Another note from a website dedicated to Mt. St. Helens:
"The massive ash cloud grew to 80,000 feet (18 kilometers) in 15 minutes and reached the east coast in 3 days. Although most of the ash fell within 300 miles of the mountain, finer ash circled the earth in 15 days and may continue to stay in the atmosphere for many years."

Lastly the Mount St. Helen's eruption, as big as it was, would be miniscule compared to that of a super volcano.

That was about the same size as Mt. St. Helens, about a 5 on the VEI scale. A supervolcano would be an 8, about 1000 times the ash volume.

Over the last 5 years, the dicovery channel and its partner networks (science channel, history channel), has been progressively dumbed down and sensationalized for ratings.

If the show you watched about this sent a shiver down your spine, its because it was calculated to do that and to get your attention. I saw 2 different segments on the caldera eruption process about 6-7 years apart on the discovery channel. With the EXACT SAME DATA being thrown around, the first show was very well executed and had a spectrum of possibilities. I saw the latter one and had to laugh! everything was SUPER-APOCALYPSE!!! FEAR FEAR FEAR!

Its a shame. Even the history channel now feels compelled to have third rate re-enactments of historical events during their discussions about facts and theories.

In short, don't buy into the once-reliable history channel as "gospel" about what could happen here. They take the small segment of science they want to show you for ratings.

Is it just me, or is anyone else surprised that we haven't heard any linking between the quakes and climate change in the liberal media?

They'll find a way. If it happens in the next 4 years, lets see if Obama gets blamed for it happening like Bush was blamed for Katrina happening.

Not like it'll matter since those of us unable to leave the country will be dead in probably a month.

Bush was not blamed for Katrina (except by the phenomenally stupid). He was blamed for the response to Katrina.

Neither was his fault. The President doesn't oversee the mobilization and distribution of aid after a disaster. The person in charge of FEMA does.

Umm excuse me bitch? The president places in charge qualified people to run things like FEMA. He should have been on the phone asking for hourly updates when it was obvious what was going on. He should have flown home from his vacation when it was obvious that the shit was about to hit the fan. He damn well was responsible in this cluster fuck. He may not have been responsible for the actual hurricane but any president worth even 2 cents would have been instructing FEMA to mobilize 3 days in advance if not more...instead of what? A week later? That is the difference between a leader and a retard that would be President.
Watch everyone. We are going to seen a concerted effort to "revision" history over the next 10 years as Bush does his damnedest to try and paint is legacy in the best possible light. The problem is it doesn't matter what you paint it....a stinky turd of shit is still shit.

Is it just me, or is anyone else sick of people from all parts of the spectrum politicizing science?

No, it is sickening. Especially when these people are just parroting talking points instead of anything based in reality.

I agree. It is getting old. You would think that at a site like this there would be a higher level of discussion.

Actually, it really shows you what type of person it is when they're manipulating science for their own gains. Science in itself is totally neutral. It simply is. Fact beyond contention.

As soon as someone labels any part of that as "good", "bad", or anything else, they're pushing a personal view.

Actually, I would dispute this. Science is both a body of knowledge AND the active process that generates and supports that body of knowledge. What gets investigated, and the point of view of the investigators, has a big impact on the body of knowledge, via papers, articles, etc. And like it or not, science is hugely political, insofar as things like NSF, NIH, etc. fund a lot of research; and indirectly, they have impacts on what gets researched, the credent
