Intel's July 23 launch schedule and price cuts for Core 2 Duo
Eight weeks until Intel's new architecture

Here are two launch dates you might want to put on your calendar, July 23 and July 11.  AMD will introduce its widely hyped LGA 1207-pin Socket on July 11, followed by Intel's shipments of its widely hyped Core 2 Duo Conroe processor on July 23 -- just in time for Kristopher's twenty-third birthday.

Conroe, now officially known as Core 2 Duo for desktops, is officially scheduled to ship on July 23.  Intel has already stated that the company plans for Conroe to account for 40% of its desktop sales by Q1'07 -- a massive undertaking for a completely new architecture.  The pricing for July 23 on Conroe is still exactly as we had published back in April.  Intel allowed some benchmarks of Conroe earlier this year, with reasonably favorable results. Intel has also put out an advisory saying it will aggressively sell its 9xx and 8xx dual-core processors between June 4, 2006 and July 23, 2006 in order to dump inventory before the Conroe launch.

With the Opteron Revision F launch, we will see the new processor cores Santa Ana and Santa RosaSanta Ana is actually a dual-core AM2 component targeted specifically for workstations and 1U servers, while Santa Rosa is an LGA-1207 dual-core Socket F processor.  There are no single-core Opteron Revision F processors.  Quad-core Revision G Opterons (Deerhound) are not anticipated for at least another year.

AMD's new 1207-pin socket, dubbed Socket F, has made a few appearances on DailyTech already.  The socket will be AMD's first land-grid-array (LGA) socket using the same method of contact pads for the processor found on Intel LGA-775 and LGA-771 processors.  The retention clip is also a radical change for AMD.

Update 06/18/2006: Intel has pushed the official embargo of Conroe to July 27, 2006 (the shipment dates are still July 23), and AMD has moved the Socket F launch to August 1, 2006.

I cannot wait for the dumping of inventory of current Core Duo laptops
I am planning to get a even cheaper Dell
Hopefully this will happen during Memorial Day or 4th of July Sales
I love AMD but I only have loyalty to my Pockect book and Intel seem to have the upper hand for the next gen CPUs

The dumping of dual-core 9xx and 8xx processors are the desktop Prescott parts, not the Core Duo which have model numbers like T2xxx and L2xxx. I doubt the recently introduced Core Duo laptops will be selling cheaply anytime soon.

I was going to upgrade my computer right when conroe came out. However, with vista delayed until november (for us developers jan 07 for everyone else) i might just wait until then.

Maybe i need to do a bit more research, but is woodcrest the only cpu getting a new platform, or is conroe getting a new one as well?

conroe is on LGA-775 except it requires higher voltage i believe. Wait for offical conroe ready mobos.

Lower voltages, actually, not higher.

There's a few mobos already out compatible with it but I think they are all from Intel... so better wait anyways.

In someways woodcrest is not on a new platform, there is Xeon 50xx series based off the Netburst architexture. Buts its only release recently. I don't understand why anyone would desired the 50xx, the Woodcrest series appears to me much better.

People are running Conroe's on existing systems over at Xtreme systems ( Engineering samples I assume ).

Why not run Vista now?

I doubt Core Duo prices will drop anytime soon, especially since Merom (the mobile version of Conroe) is not supposed to hit until August.

I believe that they meant 40% of their high-end sales, not all desktop sales. Please note that their are no Celerons in the graph...

No. I think they means 40% of shipment.
Intel said its the fastest ramp up chips in her history. (usually its 30% over 2Q)

the way they push P4 single core in $80 range.... who will buy the Celerons...

e.g. Price on July 23
820 $113 (price drop to $93 Q4)
805 $93
541 $84
524 $69

If you look at the chart provided
http://images.dailytech.com/nimage/1136_large_inte...
It shows that the 40% is relative to P4 and Pentium D only...

BTW...the reason I bring it up is that Celerons make up more than half of all desktop systems for Intel. That means (according to the chart) that Conroe will actually be closer to less than 20% of all desktop parts...

Really thinking about getting a Core 2 Duo desktop to replace my older Athlon XP. Sorry, but AMD's prices on X2 processors are too high compared to Intel.

I'm with you on this one. Ready to can my Athlon XP for Core 2 Duo as well. But the price drops are killing me, I've had my wallet out 3 times already and have to talk myself into waiting every day.

ya, i got oblivion (cpu version) as a birthday present about a week ago. As my current system won't play it, its gonna be rough waiting over 2 months to buy a new one. I'll be upgrading from a sempron 2600+, i'm eyeing the E6600 currently.

Woodcrest date?

Isn't "Woodcrest" launching before "Conroe"?

" just in time for Kristopher's twenty-third birthday."
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO U-ALL THE BEST-KEEP ON WRITING THE GOOD STUFF on this site.
NObody till now seems to read the article carefully to note the above.
Now about the dumping stuff -just how much of the discounts Intel will give ,will actually be passed on to the buyer?
Will it be worth buying when the new ones coming into the market perform even better.
AMD is making a mistake launching so close to Intel launch date, because the Conroe news will push aside all attention that will normally go to AMD.
All(most) the website give Conroe a good review,& will continue giving a lot of time/space/attention to this.

I think that because my birthday is on the 23 of July, I should get a free Conroe CPU from Intel.
