Don't make fun of TSA employee Rolando Negin's small junk, or he will beat you with a club.  (Source: MSNBC)

President Obama has pledged hundreds of millions of dollars to pepper airports with the scanners, which have been shown in independent tests not to accurately detect plastic, powder, liquid weapons, or explosives.  (Source: AP)
One worker is now in jail after assaulting a co-worker who teased him about his small genitalia

Rolando Negrin, 44, had a pretty good life including a steady job with the Transportation Security Administration.  However, when he stepped into a full body scanner during a training session and it revealed him to have rather small genitalia, he quickly became the butt of his supervisor's jokes.

Filled with rage at the insults to his manhood, Negrin confronted his boss in the airport parking lot, armed with a police baton.  He struck the man on the arm and back.  A police report describes, "[Negrin] then told victim to kneel down and say 'your sorry'.  Victim stated he was in fear and complied with [Negrin]."

Surprisingly, Negrin made no attempt to flee following the attack.  He showed up at work the next day, acting as if nothing had happened.  He was promptly arrested.  He was booked into the Miami-Dade jail.  He was wearing his blue TSA shirt at the time of his arrest.

The incident raises serious questions about the full body scanners that the Obama administrationis looking to spend millions of dollars in taxpayer money to roll out at airports across the country.

Homeland Security and TSA officials, as well as the scanner manufacturers have previously claimed that the scanners blur private parts.  The incident clearly indicates that if these capabilities are present, they aren't on in at least some of the scanners -- a serious privacy concern.

Beyond the privacy concerns, there's also concern over the efficacy of the new scanners.  British experts say that the scanners are virtually useless at detecting low density substances like chemical powders or liquids, and would be unlikely to detect plastic weapons.

Despite these concerns the U.S. and British governments are charging ahead with plans to roll out the controversial devices.  It looks likely that the U.S. may soon implement a no-scan-no-fly policy, much like Britain.

Sounds like we are hiring complete morons to take care of our national security. Both of these guys lack any shred of common sense. For starters unless the man was fully erect there's no way of knowing how big he really is. In any case most women will tell you that it's width not length that will get their attention more, I mean there are only nerves in about the first inch aren't there?

As for the scanners, if there weren't so many prudes out there who were so insecure and ashamed of their own bodies, we could save the cost and just go through the checkpoint naked. Oh right, someone might giggle at our teeny weeny or flat as a bikkie chest :-)

You need to ask yourself what sort of person can sit at a scanner for hours on end, looking at people passing through it. What sort of people can deal with a constant stream of annoyed and irritated citizens all day long, asking the same questions and giving the same instructions over and over again, day after day, year after year.

Very few, if any, DailyTech readers could handle that sort of dull monotony, IMO. I know I couldn't do it; the dreariness would crush me and the stupidity and arrogance of the general public would infuriate me. I doubt I'd last a week.

It takes a special sort of person to do what a TSA guard does. If we ask people to do this sort of crushingly dull task, we shouldn't be surprised by the sort of people who come forward to do it.

Maybe if they were doing something worthwhile they wouldn't be so bored. I mean, it's the same group over and over perpetrating these acts. Bloomie has his coppers looking for them disgruntled white males who don't like Obamacare. Works for me? Yeah, right! Filthy pig swill.

Soldiers somehow manage to do it, with full respect and integrity.

For example, my latest shift schedule was 4 hours on, 4 hours off; with the 4 hours off being on a readiness team.

Soldiers are expensive to train. The problem isn't who's coming forward, it's how the hiring process is structured.

Like any other government controlled business, they usually hire the cheapest labor they can get and never invest a penny more in training than they need to.

Soldiers have careers that move beyond standing around at a checkpoint for 4 on, 4 off. Most of these guys are never going to do anything beyond what they're doing right now.

Plus, I doubt very much that they have any espirit de corps whatsoever. Soldiers (at least here in the US) tend to be given a certain amount of respect. I very much doubt that these guys get even a fraction of that, not even from one another.

Someone else commented that I seemed to be making excuses for these guys. I'm not. I'm trying to point out where they're coming from, not defending their actions. But mainly, I'm just glad as hell that I am not doing what they do.

Wow, make excuses much....I had that sort of Job all through College and I never was as rude or belligerent as half the TSA hired goons are. Don't make excuses for the morons they hire that abuse their power.

Also the people they are harassing have every right to be pissed off. We are paying their salary with our tax dollars to protect the interest of a private industry. The whole concept of airport security is laughable. the idea that I the American Tax payer has to pay to hire people to do the security for a private company is the real crime here. Let the Airlines be responsible for it and I bet you will see a more secure and better run airport security.

You had that sort of job as a way to work towards your future. That sort of job IS THEIR FUTURE.

... it makes all the difference in the world whether someone is looking forward to a better day or looking forward to nothing more than growing older.

Obviously they should not harass you but this is what a certain % of the population do if given the power to do so. You simply remember those that do far more than those who don't, but consider for a moment what they are trying to do, find people with mental problems looking to cause harm to others. Would you like to be looking for bombs all day long?

So on second thought, no you didn't have "that sort of job". It doesn't justify their actions but those actions can be understood if you pause and consider that no, everybody doesn't have the "same" situation.

Then don't take the job...no one forced these people into a what really is a cushy job for entry level education and training. Also keep in mind since they Govt employee's they get the same benefits and job security as most Govt jobs provide which is leaps and bounds superior then private sector jobs of the same level.

I never said I had the same job I said same type...my job was similar enough, well except they are getting paid 3 times as much as I did, and they have full health benefits and I didn't, Oh, and lets not forget the pension plan they get and I didn't. Your right they weren't the same mine was worse and I had to deal with College students all day and night. I'm sorry I'm having trouble understanding how they have ANY room to complain given what they do or how they treat the people they harass.

The machine is supposed to BLUR 'sensitive' areas, not hide them completely.

Besides, if the machine detects what it think is a harmful object, undoubtedly it'll fire off an alert even if you stuff the junk down your drawers. But nevermind logic, just go off on your anti-obama rant whydoncha. :D

I think you missed the logic. Do X-Ray scanners go off when a gun passes through it? No. Why should this scanner be any different? You're going to need visual conformation which is why we have actual people looking at them. If a robot could do his job then we'd get a robot to do it. They'd be cheaper and wouldn't care about "junk."

TSA Maturity level?
By jRaskell on 5/7/2010 3:48:11 PM , Rating: 2
What this also clearly indicates is that the average level of maturity of TSA employees is simply not high enough to be even remotely involved in such privacy concerns.

It's quite clear that all parties involved in this incident lack an adult level of maturity, and yet there's no reason for concern over what these scanners are or aren't doing?

RE: TSA Maturity level?
By mindless1 on 5/11/2010 6:18:42 AM , Rating: 2
Are you representing yourself as the one with an adult level of maturity?... 'cuz I have to tell you, if I were your boss and you needed your job, I am sure I and others could team up harassing you until you snapped.

I'm not saying I'd do so, certainly not but the point is, everyone has a breaking point. Sometimes it matters more that you teach a harasser a lesson enough that they think twice before moving on to harass someone else. Merely getting them fired from their present job doesn't necessarily correct that kind of character flaw.

RE: TSA Maturity level?

A nice theory, but it would be better if you only commented on things you actually knew something about. Britain, where all passengers are required to show their genitals to the airport staff, has had problems with this very thing. Most notably when an Indian actor was given a copy of his fully nude scan by a woman who wanted a signature.
Blurring is done after the image is taken, the raw image could not possibly be obfuscated. Moreover, the same people who promise us they aren't just looking at our genitals, also said the machines are not capable of storing or saving images. Then, to prove that the genitals are blurred, they provided many scans with genitals blurred out. This leaves me with 2 questions - since the genitals are really the only thing you can't investigate through other means, what's the point, and if they can't store or save pictures, what are they showing us?!
