Eight titles will be available at launch

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that May 23 is the launch date for the first Blu-ray movies. The May 23 launch date will coincide with Samsung's release of the first commercially available Blu-ray Disc (BD) player, the BD-P1000. It will be available at launch at Best Buy and Circuit City as well as other electronic specialty store. BD players will soon after be released from Samsung, Pioneer (BDP-HD1) and Sony (BDP-S1).

The launch titles will include:
  • 50 First Dates
  • The Fifth Element
  • Hitch
  • House of Flying Daggers
  • A Knight's Tale
  • The Last Waltz
  • Resident Evil Apocalypse
  • XXX
Sony previously announced that Blu-ray titles would appear in late April; the one month setback is discouraging but at least some progress has been made.

"Game reviewers fought each other to write the most glowing coverage possible for the powerhouse Sony, MS systems. Reviewers flipped coins to see who would review the Nintendo Wii. The losers got stuck with the job." -- Andy Marken
