The Xperia T3 features a stainless steel frame with a "mirrored" finish

With companies like Apple, Samsung, and HTC taking up the bulk of the attention when it comes to smartphones, it’s easy to forget that Sony makes some high-quality devices running Google’s dominant Android operating system.

Today, Sony is looking to add a bit of a “premium” feel to the mid-range smartphone market with the introduction of the Xperia T3, which Sony claims is the “world’s slimmest” 5.3” smartphone at just 7 mm thick. The 5.2-ounce Xperia T3 is wrapped in a stainless steel frame that Sony says, “‘mirrors’ the world around you.”

Given it’s positioning in Sony’s smartphone lineup, the Xperia T3 comes with a 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 720p TRILUMINOS display (277 PPI), and an 8MP Exmor RS rear camera. A 2,500 mAh battery feeds the smartphone, which Sony says is good for 688 hours of standby, 8 hours of video playback, and nearly 13 hours of talk time.

The Xperia T3 will be available in white, black, and purple when it launches next month.

Give me a new Xperia Play with modern tech! This is the one company that can do it and they haven't yet?! WTH?!

I would LOVE that as well. Heck I'd love to just get the freaking X1 Compact on Verizon but neither is going to happen.

Sony is too late to the market. Look at the Z2, it should have been released when the S5 was as they are both very comparable. The US market seems to get the shaft when it comes to release dates, which I think they are missing out on what they could have with potential US market share.

Sony isn't focusing on the US market because

1) the market is too saturated, and

2) it's essentially a two-horse race, between Samsung and Apple - if you're not one of those two companies, you're competing for tiny slices of the market.

I am glad most companies don't think like you. If they did, we would have a small monopoly in every single market. "OK they are already huge so dont try" isnt how business works. Look at LG, they had the same issue. 2012 and 2013 saw them cracking it open and making solid gains. With the public raction to the G3 I am betting 2014 is a bit better. If they keep pushing and releasing good product people see it and want it. If no-one sees it, no-one wants it.

Anyhow, back to point. Sony as a company was just too huge and broken. They cant react well and dont make good choices. They announced they lost another 1billion last quarter. Sony has an entirely different set of issues with profitability.

Worse still, new phones are mostly distributed via carrier agreements, this makes it all the more difficult to compete with the Apple and Sammys out there. Hardly anyone would pay $600 for a new unlocked handset due mostly to carrier subsidy (brain washing). A sad state of a controlled market.

Looks nice

Sony designs nice looking phones. A mirrored finish sounds like a fingerprint magnet though. Maybe if they had some sort of oleophobic coating that would help. Screen res is not great, but it is acceptable on a 4.5 inch screen. I tend to like Sony's designs. I wish they'd make some Windows Phones.

They can really shrink the top and bottom bezel, especially the bottom.

And the side bezel as well. LG does it really well when making tiny bezel phones. I would like to get the Xperia though.

Google

Pretty sure it's "Google's dominant Android operating system"

But is it waterproof?

This could be a very nice phone for the prepaid/midrange set. I would definitely be interested *if* it was waterproof like the high-end phones...
