The Galaxy Alpha comes more into focus

Just yesterday, we were graced with images of the new 4.7” Galaxy Alpha in white. Today, we’re being exposed to specs for the device along with some pictures comparing Samsung’s latest smartphone with the iPhone 5S.
According to specs posted by UK retailer Mobilefun — which were then promptly removed — the Galaxy Alpha will feature a 4.7” Super AMOLED display (1280x720, 320 PPI), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, a 12MP rear camera, and a 2.1MP front-facing camera. In addition, the Galaxy Alpha will come equipped with a Samsung Exynos 5 Octa processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage space, and will run Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

But the leaks don’t stop there; new images of the Galaxy Alpha (in black) have surfaced showing how it stacks up to the iPhone 5S. When placed side-by-side, the Galaxy Alpha is at least a few millimeters thinner than the 7.6mm-thick iPhone 5S.
However, we must remember that the Galaxy Alpha will be going head-to-head with the upcoming 4.7” iPhone 6, which will also reportedly sport a thinner frame than the iPhone 5S. The images also confirm that the Galaxy Alpha features a dimpled plastic back similar to what is seen on the Galaxy S5.
And this particular model appears to feature LTE-A capabilities, which were recently introduced on the Galaxy S5 LTE-A.

Looks decent enough, I care about the physical size of it though.

Based on its 4.7 inch screen and the available pics with decent (not huge nor small) bezels it's pretty obvious what size it is. It's a standard 4.7 inch phone size, and pretty damn thin.

Would've been nice to see it next to an iPhone as more than just a thickness comparison, though. Sometimes it's hard to tell the exact size of a phone. 4.7" is 4.7", but depending on the bezel it could feel a lot smaller or a lot larger than other 4.7" phones.

Two reasons:
1) (Main reason) The article was already comparing it to the iPhone. It's stacked next to an iPhone to show thickness, but there just wasn't an image of length/width
2) The iPhone is still incredibly popular, and probably still outsells any one single android phone by a lot, so it would be the best device to target the widest audience in a "this is how it compares to your current phone" comparison.

There are also a lot of people with iPhone 5 from two years agao teetering on changing camps. Inadiquate screen size and too little base memory are two reasons I hear often. It makes plenty of sense for there to be comparisons.

I don't think I ever had a problem with "inadequate memory" on the iPhone 5 in over two years of ownership and it was a darn sight faster and more responsive than my Galaxy 5 in daily use. What are these people running to cause it run out of memory?! It might have less memory than a Note 3 and most recent Android Phones, but since it runs a different OS, that doesn't really mean very much unless you are hitting "memory full" type errors, which I never saw.

Im thinking he means storage space. as there is no microsd option. so your stuck with what you buy... until you buy a new phone.

Yea, I'm hoping its the same width of a Moto X (or thinner). That's about the limit of width that I like. Though that height is pretty nice....

I think you have alot of things backwards.

"And please spare me the incoming "apple didn't invent chamfered edges" excuse. No shit, we all know that, but we also know Apple popularized it "

So, when Apple copied it, it was OK, but when Samsung did, its not OK?

"just like the gold colored iPhone that Samsung also copied"

Samsung had gold phones years before Apple. So when Apple copied from Samsung its perfectly fine? When Samsung picks the color back up, its bad? Just trying to clartify what it is that you mean and when it's OK to copy and when its not.

"It's no wonder this company is bleeding."

Bleeding? They just made how many billion last quarter? How many billions in each ofthe previous 16 quarters? Making slightly less profit than expected and growing at a slower rate then previous is neither losing money, or shrinking.

In fact, you haven't stated anything factual or remotely based in reality here. What exactly is your point?

Yes, in a court in the Silicon Valley, with a hometown jury and with evidence of prior art left out by the judge. That trial? The one pending appeal that zero money has been paid on? Yeah, I am not worried about that if I was Samsung.

Why do you guys make it out like Apple is somehow different than all other tech companies. They aren't... Apple also copied Androids notifications and WebOS's multitasking. Apple copied the whole smartphone idea in the first place from Palm and RIMM. Should it have been banned? Of course not. Get over yourself. Businesses copy the working ideas of other businesses. It's how business has been ran since the dawn of civilization. Apple does it as much as any company.

In the end the best product at the best price wins. That is called competition and its how the free market works and always has.

You can basically sum up the US [sham] trials with the following line:

"Samsung not US company. Samsung bad."

Unfortunately, that goes counter with Cupertinon logic.

I'm glad a company with such poor taste, zero imagination, zero sense of design, and zero ethics is (rapidly) declining.

Me too! The fall of Apple has been fantastic to watch.

Thin enough

I think 7, even 8.5mm is thin enough otherwise you end up with a smaller battery and less surface area to grip. Taper it to make it fit the hand better if want to give the illusion of it being super thin, though the sides of my One M8 could be flatter...
