Samsung trade-ins soared 210% during new iPhone launch

It appears the huge number of smartphone owners with Samsung branded devices chose to trade those devices in during the iPhone 5s launch. Apple had a huge sales weekend for its iPhone 5S and 5C smartphones, with over 9 million sold. According to electronics recycling company Gazelle, trade-ins of Samsung devices also soared during Apple’s iPhone launch weekend.

Gazelle says that during the launch weekend for the new iPhone models trade-ins of Samsung smartphones increased 210 percent. Gazelle says that on September 20, the day the iPhone 5s and 5c launched, it made five offers per second between 10 AM and 11 AM for Samsung branded smartphones.

Gazelle also notes that the average value per trade was $50 higher this year than it was last year.

Traded in their S4s as if the new iPhone is some groundbreaking product? ORLY?!

it doesn't say which models. it could have been galaxy ace II, or some other value or mid-range phones. i also think it's pretty normal that people trade in their phones whenever some new model is launched. i'm sure trades increased before the S$ launch, and maybe even before the HTC 1 launch.

there are people who always have to have the latest.

For example, I know 3 girls that traded in their GS3 for Iphone5. Then traded their iphone5 for GS4. Now they traded in their GS4 for iphone5s.

Of course they'll make a new excuse every time like
"screen is too small"
"phone is too big for my pocket"
"I hate passwords"
"I miss facetime"
etc...

it's weird but whatever

So where can I get one of these barely used S4's?

This isn't unexpected. Say 10% of people who use a Samsung phone are dissatisfied enough to switch to an iPhone.

If only 10 million people use Samsung phones, then that means only 1 million people are wanting to trade it in for an iPhone.

If 200 million people use Samsung phones, then that means 20 million people are wanting to trade it in for an iPhone.

Despite what people want to believe about self determination, churn rates (rate at which people switch to a different product) are remarkably consistent. If you increase the number of people using a product, the number of people who dislike it will also increase even if the churn rate remains the same. With the huge lead Samsung has taken over Apple in the smartphone market, it's not at all surprising that the number of people switching from Samsung to Apple has also increased. (Samsung had ~75% YOY growth in smartphone sales from 2011 to 2012. Apple had just 30% YOY growth. Not that the media ever reports this stuff unless it's Apple in the lead.)

Also, it's interesting that when comparing Samsung smartphone sales to iPhone sales, the media usually compare a single model of Samsung smartphone to the iPhone. But when it comes to Samsung trade-ins, suddenly the "correct" metric is the sum total of all Samsung models? It's like they deliberately spin every data point in the way it's most favorable to Apple.

True, but the way the data is presented, it's not much of a stretch to think they meant people to believe the trade-in's were for new iPhones.

by your logic no Smartphone is groundbreaking. Let alone anything Samsung makes.

This would be an expected market trend. New gadget comes out and people are dumping their old stuff. Why o why didnt the article say how much trade ins of old apple products increased by?? I would wager its close to the samsung variants.
So thanks for the report captain obvious, lol.

you could always get differently colored battery covers for galaxy phones on amazon... please don't pretend that apple invented color.

Samsung admitted in court that it created a document outlining how to copy the iPhone. Within like 24 hours of Apple's 64-bit announcement Samsung had their own. Now we have the gold Samsung phones.

Let's blame Steve Jobs and Apple customers, right?

I guess shameless copying is an improvement over hiring hordes of people to write fake reviews and comments, as Samsung has.

Got some evidence to back all that up?

It takes a lot more than 24 hours to get a new phone, complete with 64-bit processor, from concept to market.

I really get a laugh at all the iSheep that assume that just because finally Apple manages to put about a product a few days earlier that their competitors just humping the dog while Apple was developing their own version of the same thing.

Now does Apple offer a pink or brown iPhone with a gold plastic back and gold trim? Do you think Apple has a patent on the color gold? Does Samsung put out a phone with a gold anodized aluminum shell?

Steve Job used to say iPhone screen size was perfect and competitor big screen size was useless. But eventually iPhone upgraded their screen size. Was that copying? Or is it just selling products with features that consumers want? Screen size is not patented, nor is color, or 64-bits. Same argument can be said about the feature comparison documents, which only California jury can twist it to make it look like evidences for copying.

Sure. Nobody at Samsung saw the leaked images of gold iPhone parts months before its launch... and Apple was able to design and manufacture all the gold iPhones from Aug 27 to Sep 20.

I'd switch back to iPhone if it was bigger...

I had a 4S when they came out for ~11 months. I got tired of typing in landscape as I just failed at two thumb portrait typing. Thankfully I worked in a mobile industry and had a chance to "borrow" a S3 for a week. I sold the 4S and bought an S3.

That said, if apple were to make a larger iPhone I'd jump back. Their app choices and better tablet apps make for a more complete ecosystem than Google's. Though I might get the new Nexus 10 a chance if the reviews are right.

I'm with you there. I simply prefer iOS over Android, but would like a bigger screen. My iPhone 4S 2 year deal is up in 4 weeks, but I don't know what to get. Maybe the iPhone 5S screen will be big enough? I really wish there was a larger screen iphone...

I think it is sad that it really matters to you what other people are buying.

Did I make him type that he wanted a bigger screen? I don't care what he buys, just giving him another perspective.

I think its sad you need to follow me around and troll me. Especially in a discussion you weren't even part of.

The screen on a 5S is not as wide as the screen on the 4 so , typing with fat thumbs will be even harder. I thought this was quite amusing the first time I saw a Iphone 5, my mate took a picture and without zooming in (due to the funny aspect/screen resolution) the picture was actually smaller than on a 4S

Did DT really look into this information before posting it?

I actually did follow it along to not only DT's source, but to Gazelle.

The article's original author is assuming that people are "trading in" their phones to Gazelle for iPhones. Yet if you look at Gazelle's business model, they don't take trade-ins for new phones. They simply buy old cell phones. Period. Not sure what they do with them afterward, but they don't sell iPhones. DT's source cannot assume money customers got from Gazelle was being used to buy an iPhone.

I am more inclined to think that folks simply waited to see what Apple's next big thing, found out how crappy it was, then ditched their old smartphone to buy a new Samsung Galaxy S4 or one of its Android-based competitors.

DT really should do their homework and follow through on their sources before reposting trash and unsubstantiated articles.

DT is turning into an Apple/Microsoft circle jerk. Especially when it comes to smartphones. There's hardly been one damn article about the MotoX or the LG G2, and barely a tidbit about the Note 3.

The Microsoft overload is especially obnoxious. Every week there's like 5 articles about Windows 8 and the Surface that could frankly be condensed into one or two, because they're always about the same thing!

By troysavary on 9/27/2013 12:15:50 PM , Rating: 1
Maybe because their is a new crappy Android device released every few days and the only ones actually selling are Samsungs. An new Android phone is hardly news. Cheap Chinese manufacturers have hundreds of them. It would be like making an article every time Acer brought out a cheap Windows laptop. No one cares.

So where's the DT article...

I think it means that 18,000 decided to check the value of their phone. I doubt that 100% of Gazelle's offers were accepted.

Pretty easy to just go to Gazelle and click a few buttons and get an offer.
As a matter of fact I just got an offer for $259 on a Google Edition Samsung S4 and I don't even own one.

Samsung has already prevented this from continuing with their announcement of a gold SGS4.
