HTC Windows RT tablets rumored for Q3 2013

Back in October we reported that HTC was leaving the U.S. tablet market after getting clobbered by major players like major players like Apple and Amazon. The smartphone maker hadn't had much in the way of success with its seven-inch Flyer or its Android-based 10.1-inch Jetstream tablets.
 
However, a report has surfaced which claims that HTC is coming back to the US tablet market. HTC is reportedly planning to make tablets running the Windows RT operating system. According to the sources, HTC is working on 12-inch and a seven-inch tablet (which can also make phone calls).

If this rumor turns out to be true, the move would give Microsoft another ally in the battle against iOS and Android on the tablet market. So far, Microsoft Windows tablets haven't been the success that Microsoft hoped for. Sales of the Surface RT tablet have been relatively modest and many of the business-focused Windows 8 tablets have yet to ship.

The sources claiming to be familiar with HTC's tablet plans claim both tablets will ship in 2013.

Windows RT only seems that way because its just starting out. It has to start somewhere. Where I find RT fails is the price of the tablets themselves. If someone can come out with an x86 based tablet around the $500.00 mark that's not a Atom based core then I see no reason for the RT tablet or we could see the RT tablet drop to $300.00 which is where it should have been.

I agree. At one point Android was crap too and look at how good it is now.

I think Win 8/RT for tablets is a good UI in general, although I'm not sold on having a desktop for Win RT and I'm not sure how well any desktop would work on a 7" tablet.

Putting that aside, Microsoft really needs to step on the accelerator for apps to get up to speed. It's a great opportunity for new developers to get into a new ecosystem early on. iOS and Android have so many entrenched apps now that it's much more difficult to gain traction for a new app in those environments.

I guess, but MS usually gets things right on the 3rd try, and Win8 is just that (WP7, WP7.5, W8).

Based on what? iPad & Android tablets or your desktop/laptop? If you compare it to other tablets on the market I think Windows RT is in a better position for the future even though there are way less applications available for it. It does have Microsoft Office which is something the other tablets don't have.

Be prepared for the ballooned price, added weight, and likely reduced battery life. The reason OEMs are jumping on Windows 8 is because pricey Intel chips are left at the door. There is no room for profit with Microsoft licensing fees and Intel exorbitant chip pricing. If you want a Windows 8 tablet at a similar price you're relegated to Atom territory.

With Microsoft it has always been performance, price, battery life... pick two. Seems to me that nothing has changed. Maybe next gen Atom will change the narrative.

Go check the reviews for corei5 tablets. Battery life is right up there with the rest, and i can live with 500 added grams.
I ain't gonna pay 200$ for a cheap tablet. I can afford more. Surface pro at 900$ is the sweet spot for me, it's gonna replace my laptop and i can just have a beefy Workstation at home.
There are 100000 apps on Windows phone, which i have, and most of them will be ported to Windows 8/RT. However i don't see the point of having ONLY the apps with RT and live with a tegra 3 soc when you can have a PC replacement with a core / Haswell processor in it. Pricier, yes. So is a 64 GB ipad with 4GLTE.
OEM could build a 500$ AMD tablet if they tried. MSI windpad came out last year and i though it was pretty good. It has enough GPU horsepower to have better than a 1300/768 screen. Why no OEM gives a crap about AMD is beyond me.
Oh yeah, i have bluestack android emulator on my PC. No need for an android tablet i can already have the apps and much more. An ipad is actually the only alternative i see for a Windows 8 tablet because of the final fantasy 4 remake they have on it.
