Free memberships will require users to listen to some ads

Microsoft made an interesting announcement today regarding its upcoming Xbox One gaming console. Albert Penello, Microsoft’s Senior Director of Product Management and Planning, has confirmed that Xbox One owners that subscribe to Xbox Gold won't have to subscribe to Xbox Music – the service will come at no additional cost with an Xbox Gold subscription.

The only “catch” is that the free subscription to Xbox Music will mean they have to endure "periodic ads." There's no indication of exactly how many ads users will have to put up with.

Microsoft’s Xbox One will launch November 22 with a price tag of $499.

And go with a console instead of a PC!

" It's actually quite sad to see so many people use graphics to help their buying decisions."

Of course gameplay matters, but having both inst a bad thing. Ask Nvidia and ATI/AMD why they have been one upping each other for the past 10+ years... Because people want better graphics. To be stuck at 720p in 2013 on a brand new yet to be released console that should last 5-7 years is just ridiculous. Its not just 720p in 2013 its got to hold you until 2020 if you buy an XBO.

720P on XBone only for Battlefield 4, only because they optimize the game to run at 60 FPS. It's not like XBone is 720P ONLY, ALWAYS.

Lets talk again in 2015 if your PS4 can keep up with PC-grade games running on 4K monitors with Nvidia GTX980 or AMD R9 490X. Even sony's "beats" is running on dual tablet-class SoCs. This is the fall of consoles. Since i already game on PC i think i'm more interested in a Wii-U than anything else.

Rofl at these PS4 people making out 1080p over 720p as some big deal going forward. 1080p will be just as big of a joke in a couple years. 4k is right around the corner, (ask the people at Sony who are paying you, they will be selling the displays!) and both consoles will not take advantage of it.

So if you actually cared about visual quality, about max resolution, you'd be a PC gamer. Not buying into a console that will be obsolete in 2 years.

You are being to kind the PS4 and XONE are obsolete NOW compared to a PC. Out of the gate they equal very middle of the road gaming PC.

That is how consoles always are, its normal and expected. It just looks like XBO is starting this round even further behind than the norm.

Regardless of specs, these systems will be relevant for the next 6 years or so until the proceeding generation replaces them.

So given that, if I were a console gamer I would definitely prefer the system that's at least built around 1080p gaming.

Microsoft can sugarcoat it however they want, but it's clear they are not confident the X-Box One can deliver 1080p gaming at acceptable framerates.

That makes it a non-starter.

Hate to break it to you, but most gamers play on BOTH. /shrug

You will not even want one within the next 2 years, PC gaming make them look bad now but the kick in the teeth for the console industry will be the steam machine, they are the dark horse in this, not quite a PC and not quite a console, and with modular upgradeable hardware.

I only meant relevant in the sense that they will be the only consoles available and games will still be made for them.

Of course PC looks better, that was true when the XB360 and PS4 was out too, but it didnt stop them from totally dominating the gaming industry for the past 7 years. PC has made a bit of a comeback in the past 1-2 years and the steam box looks very promising, and I honestly hope it gets big again, but that isnt what has historically happened. Consoles is where most game developers concentrate. I hope that PC makes a huge comeback and becomes the standard for gaming again, but its not being realistic.

Well, you do get DLNA, CD playback and a horde of other media features, plus full voice control, full web browser, Kinect 2.0 (which if you've tried it frickin' amazing), Skype...actually a metric shit-ton of stuff.

Whether or not that's worth $100 to you is a whole other issue, but to say it includes nothing for the extra $100 is quite absurd. PS4 is a specialist gaming console and will have better graphics, the XBox One does so very much more.

For me, the PS4 has cut a horde of features I use and brings nothing new to the table. I don't care about graphics on a console (I'm mostly a PC gamer) and $100 is for me no difference at all. But them being unimportant doesn't make the PS4's advantages nonexistent.

But apparently early reviewers are saying the PS4 doesn't maintain a good frame rate at 1080p:

Almost worthless information because nothing is quantified. Frame dips are always going to take place, but how many did it dip? They don't know and neither do we.

I'll just wait for an actual tech site like Anand to give us the full breakdown.

It's not the PS4, its the game, or more specifically sloppy coding.

Happening on XBO too.

If MS doesn't clarify, this kind of comes across as an "FU" to current XBox 360 owners with Gold subscriptions. As I'm trying to decide whether to renew Gold or get a Chromecast, this tips things a little further in the direction of the Chromecast.

I don't do a lot of multiplayer, but I use the 360 all the time for Netflix. I'll probably decide which next gen console to get into about a year after launch. I'm pretty sure I'll get one or the other, but I like to see how the dust settles.

" this kind of comes across as an "FU" to current XBox 360 owners "

Most of that MS has done (some of which they backpeddled on) has been a huge FU to thier customers. Looks like they arent learning. Sad when Sony has a better grasp of what customers want than MS. Note to any company, if anyone anywhere thinks you are worse than Sony, you need to re-evaluate.

I'll believe Sony has a better grasp of what consumers want when I see it, and the same with MS. That's why I'm waiting until next year sometime to buy a next gen console.

Not clear why they wouldn't also do this for XBox 360 Gold Subscribers.

As you say, let's see if this gets clarified.

Microsoft make it *very* difficult to unsubscribe from XBox Gold, I know.

1. You cannot unsubscribe online.
2. xbox.com would only show me UK support phone numbers. I live in Australia.
3. The auto-answer menus were incomprehensible -- it was like A Choose Your Own Adventure book where all options led to "Please visit xbox.com" <click!>
4. The opening hours of the support centre were incorrect, or the call centre was at the pub. I rang at 7pm: "Please call back during business hours. We're open from 9am until 8pm..."
5. Finally! A human. "Oh, I'm new, I'll have to get my supervisor"...

Sheesh! I probably ended paying for another month because it took so long to cancel my subscription.

Good luck.

Damn... I didn't realize it was such a pain. I had Gold one year when I first got the XB360 in 2011, but I let it expire in 2012. I didnt have to deal with that because I bought 1 full year in advance and by the 2nd year that credit card had expired so I didnt get shanked by MS. LOL.

...who has a sneaking suspicion that the One and PS4 are not planning on having such a long life-cycle as the previous gen?

The tech in them whilst a nice upgrade isn't quite as ground breaking as the previous gen.

I'm thinking new consoles for 2018.
