The long-awaited untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.x is finally here

Although the jailbreak was initially expected to arrive yesterday, the hacker group known as evad3rs finally released their long-awaited jailbreak for iOS 6.x today. The group wanted to wait until iOS 6.1 was pushed out the door to prevent Apple from deploying quick fix to squash the exploits needed to fuel the jailbreak.

As with previous jailbreaks, evasi0n allows users to install unauthorized apps onto iPads, iPhones, and iPod touch devices. In this jailbreak, the list of supported devices is quite extensive:

iPhone 3GS/4/4S/5
iPad 2/3/4
iPad mini
iPod touch (fourth and fifth generations)

The jailbreak software can be downloaded now (Windows, Mac, Linux), and the install process takes no more than a few clicks and few minutes to finish. The evasi0n jailbreak works on iOS 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, and 6.1.

But as a reminder, please backup your device before proceeding with the jailbreak and realize that Cydia will be slammed with people trying to access the servers for the first 24 hours (or longer).

Buy an Android instead

I'd rather buy a Android.
No need to jailbreak it, as it's already an open OS.

I'd rather have android, too, but although it is open it is not unlocked in stock form. Even the Nexus needs to be rooted, which is the equivalent of a jailbreak.

And rooting is becoming more and more difficult as more manufactures lock their bootloader, requiring ODIN-based rooting which voids the warranty. The jailbreak process is substantially easier than using ODIN to flash a new bootloader on Android handsets.

But that's expected. There is only one iPhone5, and there are dozens upon dozens of Android handsets running 5-6 different generations of Android (2.2/2.3/4.0/4.1/4.2 are all commonplace)

I'm guessing Nutzo's point is you can already do most of the things you want on an unrooted Android device. You only need to root to get to the heavier stuff usually related with flashing roms or controlling hardware directly (undervolt, oc, etc).

Yeah you missed the point. You can already do this on an Android phone WITHOUT rooting (jailbreaking) it.

But most people who jailbreak want to enable wifi tethering, etc, so they don't have to pay for a tethering plan.

Android apps that enable wifi tethering (although already included with Sprint phones) will find that Google Play apps that enable the functionality require root to do so. Root access is required to modify the network stack in Android.

So jail breaking and rooting are both required to enable this very sought after function.

Alas, I understand many people jailbreaking simply want to enable the 3rd party app stores that contain apps that are already in Google Play...

Yep. I'm still on iOS 5 as I use MyWi for free tethering. Now I can upgrade to iOS 6.

Having tried rooting an Android phone, and Jailbreaking iPhones, I have to say that Jailbreaking has always been much easier. I had to give up tryng to upgrade my Wife's Android from Froyo to ICS or Jellybean - too many problems (camera not working right, mic not working right, etc..)

Jailbroken iPhone is the best of both worlds. Utility that jailbreaking gives you as well as better hardware, more polished OS, and better apps.

As you said its also easier than rooting.

Phone OS and hardware are merely preference at this point. They all do the main things and are robust enough for most applications.

Now, a world that lets me pick my hardware and install the OS of my choosing would be a good one. It's a world where carrier lock-in is gone and they are just another Internet pipe.

Rooting and flashing roms aren't the same. If rooting is too hard for you I don't think you should be flashing roms anyway. You're comparing flashing roms to jailbreaking; can you install a community developed rom for your iphone, one that's not meant to run on it?

You say you tried on Froyo, where SuperOneClick usually works. You only have to worry about the driver to correctly detect your phone. That's a one-click solution, obviously.

As always YMMV, especially if you're using a US variant.

Android phones can WiFi tether out of the box, it's the (US?) carriers that block it. You don't have to root to gain the advantages that jailbreaking offers, it's already there.

Sideloading apps can be enabled in the settings, customization is very easy, and you only really need to root to gain access to hardware tweaks like overclocking and undervolting.

It might be easier to jailbreak, but only for reasons that are already supported in Android.

Exactly... It has nothing to do with Android and is 100% a carrier based requirement. Android is free and open and 100% tetherable as released.
