Meeting to focus on rebuffing Chinese national security threat, as well as other issues

There's been quite a bit of back-and-forth noise between President Obama's staff and top officials in the Chinese government regarding cybersecurity. The U.S. in the midst of a major push to upgrade its cyberoffensive and defensive capabilities; plus the President just signed a new executive order encouraging companies to voluntarily share information on security threats with the government.

In order to try to court top business leaders to cooperate with the new information sharing initiative, President Obama will meet today in The White House Situation Room with top CEOs in the tech industry to discuss "how the government and private sector can best work together to improve the nation’s cybersecurity."

A guest list for the closed door event was not announced in advance. Details on the meeting and who attended should trickle out by tomorrow.

Congress is currently debating cybersecurity legislation, but the efforts have stalled amid the larger fiscal sequestration debate.

The government seems to bring in the wrong people to address the problem (why is he talking to CEOs, who are for the most part, just as dumb as the average user when it comes to cybersecurity?)

It could probably be argued that the average CEO has LESS knowledge than the average user when it comes to cybersecurity...

I could be wrong he but I don't think the meeting is about preemptive security, I believe the meeting is about damage control. Also, many of these people rep engineers with good ideas. Perhaps one of them has something good to say. I'm still hopeful that something good will come of this.

It really depends on the CEO, some tech CEOs are from engineering backgrounds, while others are not. So, it really depends. But, if he is just looking to get them to start sharing information with the government, it really has to come from the top dog. So, it may not be about the tech issues but more about getting them to open up and share information with government agencies.

I hope its not just all CEO's at this meeting, because most CEO's don't know crap about IT security. Its the guys doing the actual work that do.....or today's hackers.

Best meeting they could have is to invite convicted US hackers to sit in and tell them how it really is.

Most likely this is just going to be a dog and pony show for media news.

I am starting to think that the Chinese hacking thing is just another diversion from the real problems this country has. There is no doubt China hacks the world its been going on for more than a decade. So the timing of bringing this boogeyman out of the closet is suspect but not unexpected with this inept administration. America as a whole is not concerned about Chinese Hacking they are concerned with the economy in the sense of "how am i going to feed my family long term" and a general erosion of basic rights which both equate to undue hardship and the eventuality of a lot of pissed off folks with firearms.

The president better start tackling these issues soon because even his own propaganda bureau (the MSM) is starting to turn on him.
