Apple's iPhone 4S sizzles in its first few days of availability

Critics, analysts, and some iFans were initially disappointed when the iPhone 4S was announced earlier this month, but the buying public didn't seem to be bothered by the "warmed over iPhone 4" when it was officially made available this past Friday. After seeing initial pre-orders top one million units, Apple announced today that it sold over four million iPhone 4Ses over the weekend.

For comparison, Apple sold 1.7 million units of the iPhone 4 during its first three days of availbility.

“iPhone 4S is off to a great start with more than four million sold in its first weekend—the most ever for a phone and more than double the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “iPhone 4S is a hit with customers around the world, and together with iOS 5 and iCloud, is the best iPhone ever.”

The iPhone 4S features an 800MHz dual-core A5 processor, 8MP rear camera, dual-mode CDMA/GSM network compatibility, and Siri voice recognition technology. Prices range from $199 for the 16GB iPhone 4S to $399 for the 64GB model with a two-year contract.

I do own a few apple products, but I'm getting more and more frustrated at the extortionate costs of all things apple and their ludicrous tariffs.I am on a business tariff with O2 and have been informed that my new iPhone 4s(64gb)will cost me £299 on top of a two year contract as well £15 a month for insurance. This leads me to think that in the current economic climate that there are more options and better deals out there that myself as a culprit have probably ignored.I currently own an iPhone 3GS.This is my first post so no rude comments please.

Do you actually need the 64gb model, why not just get the 16gb or 32gb one?

It will save you quite a bit of money.

Agreed it would be cheaper.i double my iPhone up as an mp3 player and have about 20gb of music which along with apps and photos soon eats into the current 32gb I have now.I know viewing pictures on a phone isn't really ideal, but it's convienant when friends or family want to see holidays snaps.

There literally isn't another 64GB smartphone out there. The closest you can get is a phone with 32GB built-in that also has a microSDHC slot... and of course, that ends up being more expensive.

If I recall correctly, the HTC Thunderbolt has 32GB built-in and a card slot, but aside from not being available in the UK, the pricing isn't all that much better. A 32GB microSDHC card costs about $200, so you're looking at $350 on contract for a device with an outdated processor, a lower-res screen, and five hours of battery!

I would advise extreme caution about buying memory cards off eBay. A lot of them are hacked so the firmware will report 32 GB of capacity, but only contain 1-2 GB of actual flash memory.

Welcome to Daily Tech, Chef!

No need to be rude here, you're becoming aware. But you've touched on one of the reasons Apple is as profitable as they are, and why I and others refuse to buy into it. Apple is the king of price gouging. They exploit third world labor to the point that they can actually make something like the iPhone for about 35% of what it sells for. On top of that they won't even add a memory card slot, but instead "offer" you even more expensive models with higher storage like they're doing you a freaking favor. I just added added 32gigs to my phone for $50 bucks with an MicroSD card.

Right, sure they are!

Let's see how this happens. First, you let the zoo animal in the wild. Second, say some wild leopard in some savanna comes up to it and politely asks: "Dear zoo animal from the walled garden, would you like some product with features you want, like maybe a bowl of food they were feeding you in the zoo?"

Tony the average person is a techo-retard and cares more about fitting into popular culture than actually reseaching a product. Anyone that took the time to investigate Apple, would easily find something they object about... either on moral grounds, technical limitations, the Apple screw me policy or innovation inhibitor(yes thats what a patent troll does). Your hard-on for Apple is making you look like a fool.

RE: Cheaper products please
By robinthakur on 10/18/2011 5:00:38 AM , Rating: 2
I wouldn't put it quite like that. They are not necessarily techno-retards, they just don't care about the technical aspects as much as you and others seem to. They are also in the majoriy here. The fact is that it does what they need it to do in a way that is convenient, so what is wrong with that? They have other options, but they choose iPhone for a reason, and it's very patronising to say that you're right and they are wrong. That so many people on here fail to realise this simple fact, is testament to why none of you should be running a tech company selling to consumers.

I seriously doubt that anybody considers the moral arguments for or against buying a phone (FYI Foxconn make devices for most of the tech industry also, so thi is a hard area to navigate, and the rare mineral used to make all phones vibrate causes vast hardship for many in teh areas in which it is mined) and what technical limitations are there on a 4S, pray tell? Most developers will be developing for it on a locked standard platform, so the software will be better optimised. This is not supposition, this is fact if you look at both App stores as they currently stand.

Are you for real? It's the first phone Apple has released in 15 months! After a massive hype campaign where they purposely leaked dubious information about an "iPhone5" to the media that they knew would really be an iPhone4 refresh. Of course it was going to sell in the millions. Like there was ever a doubt? DUH Tony! Only a crazy person would have this little common sense...

Want to avoid that "third-world labor" (it's really second-world, but don't let facts get in the way)? Stop using technology.

That Windows PC you're using? Made at the same plants. That Android phone you have in your hand? Made in similar conditions. Also, Apple is not selling the iPhone for three times its actual value, because all those teardowns only factor in the raw parts and assembly cost, not research, development, marketing, or even shipping.

I'm not excusing the plant conditions (though Foxconn has lately more than doubled pay), but you've bought into a lie that's increasingly being repeated as fact: that somehow Apple, and only Apple, has its products made in those circumstances. Where do you think Dell, HP, HTC, and others go to make hardware when their gear is stamped "made in China?" A holiday resort?

No, Apple is singled out in the media for coverage both because it's one of the larger customers and, well, because it's Apple. Everyone who covers tech for a living knows that Dell had to use contractors with substandard working conditions to get that desktop down to $299; they don't realize that the same companies also have facilities to make considerably higher quality products.

Unless you're Amish, singling out Apple's use of Chinese labor is like complaining about the sex trade while getting serviced in a Bangkok brothel.

Every component of my PC was made in China, and most of them come from a Foxconn plant. This is before we get to my game consoles, my plasma TV, etc etc.

I'll just leave this here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1266643/Mi...

http://blog.seattlepi.com/microsoft/2010/04/13/lab...

Everyone does it. It isn't good, but singling out Apple is ridiculous, especially since a lot of the abuses (especially child labor) in Apple's plant were discovered by their own inspection and they made Foxconn address it. Wages have also gone up there since then: http://www.kitguru.net/channel/carl/apple-help-fox...

I totally makes sense that Apple would get this media attention since they are the largest tech company in the world and are therefore the largest target, same happened with Microsoft in the 90s, but it is stupid fodder for arguments given that every other electronics manufacturer does the same with comparably priced or even more expensive products.

They can whine and moan about how much the 4s sucks all they want. In the end Apple's stock will prove why an incremental upgrade isn't a bad thing.

Also from what I've seen, Siri alone will convince those who have it that the 4s was worth the buy.

Siri is just an app that every iPhone could run. The fact that they took it off the App Store and bundled it with the 4S is proof of how underwhelming this phone design is. How can some piece of software make an entire new phone purchase "worth the buy"? What is wrong with you people!?

This "Siri defense tactic" being used against any criticism of the 4S is hilarious! Pulling at straws much? Speech recognition is nothing new, and it's not even that big of a deal anyway.

Yes, you can choose slower practical performance than even Windows Phone 7 on slower hardware, not to mention a fragmented app market with fewer useful applications. Ah, choices!

I run Windows 7 because it gives me lots of choice in applications and has excellent performance, not because I want to be "individual" or want to "express my personality". You'd think that some Android zealots could apply the same logical thinking to mobile devices.

Now, if you must have a physical keyboard or a giant screen and can accept the larger overall device size as well as the other drawbacks and tradeoffs with the core OS, awesome, these are legit practical reasons that I can understand. Everything else is based around irrelevant ideology.

RE: sigh
By TakinYourPoints on 10/18/2011 1:29:16 AM , Rating: 2
Ok, let's take specs into consideration then. Anandtech and several other sites have and it still benchmarks faster than any other smartphone out there. It also has by far the best developer support, and this is before we even get into jailbreaking (aka rooting) the device.

ICS may change things on the performance front, we'll see, but until then the iPhone 4S happens to be the fastest at the moment. As for software developers, we'll see, it'll depend on if the return-on-investment improves, not to mention the SDK.

Why are people obsessed with the specs?
By miteethor on 10/17/2011 12:56:04 PM , Rating: 2
I don't understand the infatuation with the specs. It's a phone, you aren't going to play Crysis on it. Who cares if it's 10% faster or if an Android is an extra 200Mhz, they all play Angry Birds just fine.

iOS in particular, and Android to a lesser extent have become bloated enough in later versions that they run poorly on older hardware. e.g. the people with iPhone 3G/3GS who sued because iOS 4 ran poorly on their phone. So you need to check the specs on your "new" hardware to make sure there's enough growing room for it to handle future software.

This is one of the reasons a lot of people were disappointed with the iPad 2 only having 512 MB of memory when most high-end Android tablets are shipping with 1 GB. It will make the device less capable in the future. Of course that's good for Apple since you'll have to buy a newer version instead of continuing to use your older one. But most normal consumers prefer not having to spend more money than they need to.
