New Windows Phone 8 smartphones from Nokia

Nokia has unveiled a pair of new Windows Phone 8 smartphones at MWC 2013. The first of the new smartphones is the Lumia 520, which has a four-inch IPS touchscreen display (800x480).
 
The phone uses a Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor operating at 1GHz, 512 MB of RAM, 8 GB of internal storage, and a microSD card slot for storage expansion. The battery has 1430 mAh of power promising 9.6 hours of 3G talk time. The phone operates on GSM and WCDMA networks. Other features include integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, and a 3.5 mm audio connector.

The 520 measures 119.9 mm x 64 mm x 9.9 mm and weighs 124 grams.

The second the smartphone is the Lumia 720. This phone has a 4.3-inch IPS display with a resolution of 800 x 480. The phone measures 127.9 mm x 67.5 mm x 9 mm and weighs 128 g. Both Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi are integrated, and the phone has NFC technology. Other features include integrated GPS, a 6.7-megapixel rear camera, and a front camera.

The internal battery 2000 mAh battery promises up to 13.4 hours of 3G talk time. The Lumia 720 supports wireless charging with an accessory cover.

Like the Lumia 520, the Lumia 720 has a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor operating at 1GHz, 512 MB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, and a microSD card slot for storage expansion.
 
Nokia also says that the phone is fitted with enterprise security features making the device appropriate for corporate environments.
 
Pricing, carriers, and availability for the devices are unknown at this time.

Also, when is Microsoft going to catch up and start offering high density pixel displays. Apple has been doing it for over two years and so has google, and now android is a stepping it up to 1080P this year.

Lumia 920 has a pixel density of 332PPI. That's more than the iPhone 5.

I can't wait for the phones that have 600ppi pixel density. Then I can use a microscope to see all that detail.

Not resolving the pixel is considered to be a good thing by most people. Allows you to drop any effort for computational AA, since you get biological super-sampling.

Phones tend to skimp on displays when they cost 140 and 240$??? If a 140$ phone has a 720P display, why on earth does the iPhone 5 and GS3 not support 4K at 5-900$?

These are probably going to do really, really well for people and even kids whose parents were reluctant to get them an expensive phone. Windows phone is definitely smoother than low-end Android, and since Apple doesn't have an iPhone mini, these should do really well.

If you can physically see 4K of detail on a 4" screen without a magnifying glass I will give you $10,000.

Thats about the size of a fine blonde hair. Generally possible to see without a magnifier if you have good eyes. Of course, counting hairs that are touching will not be possible due to lack of resolution, but thats the point. You want your pixel to be significantly smaller than the resolution of your eye, so you don't get any aliasing-effects.

4 Pixel per arcminute should generally do the trick, so if you use the phone in 30cm (12 inch) distance, go for 20 µm pixels. Thats 1270 ppi, and still only half the print resolution of a high-quality magazine.

I wonder if these are built like the 920 just lower specs.

920 touchscreen works with gloves which is great in cold weather, also its nearly indestructible, and I would be positive it used the Nokia maps which doesn't require constant carrier data connection saving data charges.

I wouldn't bet on it. Microsoft likes leaving its customers in the dust in the mobile space.

WM6 could not be upgraded to WP7, WP7 cannot be upgraded to WP8.

Seeing that Samsung and HTC both make Win 8 phones, I would say that MS isn’t exactly paying others to make their phones. They Just paid one of them to ensure that they had something good at launch.

This is a mid/low end phone. The 920 is the high end phone. Seeing that the success of Android is that it has phones for every market segment (as opposed to Apples high-end only), this seems to be exactly what’s needed to help WP8 compete against Android.

I think that platform will win single product in huge majority of cases. That is why Google is having such success with Android - they are basically doing DOS/Windows thing in mobile world.

I am hoping WP8 will manage to repeat formula.

Maybe you were sick when word "investment" was on the menu at school.

MS is investing in their partners. Not because MS is bent on fixing all the wrongs in the world, but because MS is dominantly software company (at the moment) and need hardware partners to be in a good shape. Has been doing that for ages. Heck, they even invested in Apple long time ago.

Phone will compete against likes of Samsung Galaxy Mini. Specs are quite decent for that category.

Yeah, cause when a new major version of Anroid comes out, the majority of devices are brought up to date, right?

Hint: No, they aren't. Worse yet, best case scenarion the "majority" of the minority of the phones that will upgrade to a new major release (not minor release like 3.1 to 3.2) often have to wait 6 - 12 months to see the update!

Keep it fair, at least try.

At least with Android you have the option to update the phone yourself.

Gotta admit, if you bought a WP7 phone, you got boned hard just a few months later. With no option but to get a new phone.

They're targeting the low end here. Not the high end. For the budget conscious and emerging markets, these are decent phones.

Personally I'm done with the expensive smart phones.. they go obsolete way too fast whether it's top of the line or free with contract. Just give me a free "it works just fine" phone every 2 years.

Luckily I get my phone through work and we get up to a $200 allowance every 2 years. So I'm hoping the GS4 will be $200 in April.

IMHO it's got the right pricepoint for emerging markets (ie: India/China) which is historically where Nokia has done very well. Those markets are the only reason why Nokia's GLOBAL marketshare is still as large as it is ( somewhere around 15% as I recall). Those markets are not going to see big volume purchases of their top tier phones.

Guys, the Lumia 520 is 140$ OFF-CONTRACT. The iPhone 5 is 200$ ON it. The GS3 is about the same. Why the hell are we comparing these phones with ones that cost 5 times as much? Would you compare a Ford Fiesta to a BMW series 5? A 2k, used truck to a brand new F150? OBVIOUSLY they have to cut specs somewhere. How do you expect Nokia or any phone manufacturer to put out low end devices if they look the exact same as their high end stuff? Where is the differentiation? Look at cheap android phones - they have the same specs, around (if not higher than) that price.

I'm pretty sure the midrange androids on Verizon for 100$ on contract have the same specs. Just look at the tablet market if you want an example. Kindle Fire @ 150$ - old hardware, old screen. Nexus 7 - slightly better. Ran Tegra 3, small storage, (did it have an SD card?) Nexus 10 - 400$. 1600P (something like that) display compared to the Nexus 7's 1280x800 or whatever. Quad core A15, compared to quad core A9. SD Card slot (I think?)

Price gets you more. Why on earth would you rag on something for not having the features of another product at 5x the cost. If you want another example, think about buying food at a movie theater, and then buying more expensive food at somewhere like Perry's steakhouse.

Well sometimes the food at the movie theater is more expensive than a steakhouse ;). But in all honesty I completely agree. you can compare. its like comparing a $200 computer to a $1000 dollar computer, it won't even be able to compete. Also I got the Lumia 900 in the summer and while I am disappointed that it won't upgrade to Windows 8 phone, It's still an extremely solid phone that I love.
It's quite awesome pulling up homework assignments that I worked on my computer and am able to edit them on my phone seamlessly with skydrive.
