Adult apps are verboeten on Google's wearable, for now

Google Inc.'s (GOOG) popular wearable -- Glass Explorer -- has already struggled with privacy concerns.  Now the prototype-cum-development device has hit another sticky subject -- mobile moral conundrums surrounding adult entertainment.

(NSFW) app porn company MiKandi managed to sneak an app in through the back-door of the virigin platform.  The company christened its app "Tits and Glass" and billed it as an "authentic" user-generated pornographic experience (sounds like something the hipsters would enjoy).

Jennifer McEwen, company co-founder, was titillated at the potential experiences for Glass fans, commenting in an interview with Mashable, "Unlike other hands-free recording devices, wearing Glass is easy and familiar.  Because of that, you can forget about the technology on your head and be in the moment. The result is an authentic look at the wearer's experiences.  Besides point-of-view content, we're interested in Glass' potential to facilitate two-way adult interaction. For example, between long-distance couples, cam models and fans or strangers."

But things for MiKandi got hard fast when Google caught on.  Before the much-talked about app could achieve the deep market penetration it lusted after, Google sprung into action.  Apparently concerned that users of its young wearable market might get drizzled with porn apps for would-be POV cam girls (and guys) the company pounded into place a set of changes to its Glass Platform Developer Policies, banning adult apps.  The new policy states:

Sexually Explicit Material: We don’t allow Glassware content that contains nudity, graphic sex acts, or sexually explicit material. Google has a zero-tolerance policy against child pornography. If we become aware of content with child pornography, we will report it to the appropriate authorities and delete the Google Accounts of those involved with the distribution.

Jesse Adams, CEO for MiKandi, moans to Venture Beat:

When we received our Glass and started developing our app 2 weeks ago, we went through the policy very carefully to make sure we were developing the app within the terms. We double checked again last week when making the site live on the Internet and available for install for testing during last week’s announcement. We were not notified of any changes and still haven’t been notified by Google. We also double checked our emails to see if any notifications of policy changes were announced, but we haven’t found any such emails.

But all is not lost for those looking to get ... er... an eye in the action, so to speak.  Once Google's device makes it out of the developer prototype stage, it should receive third party app stores much like Android for smartphones and tablets.  And those third parties mean one thing for sure -- lots of porn apps (there's a reason why Android critic and late Apple, Inc. (AAPL) CEO Steven P. Jobs referred to Androids as "porn phones").

Don't worry, you may eventually get to record your Glass "escapades" once more, via third party app store apps. [Image Source: TechRadar]

In the meantime MiKandi will have to get by with only its remaining website, which offers members similar "interactive" experiences, albeit via a slightly more flaccid web interface.

I can't help but LOLed reading this. Tits and Glass is a very catchy name. I'm sure many people would want this to happen. I don't think banning will really stop it either.

I frequently don't agree with Mick, but paragraphs like this make it worth the while ;)

Yup, they still look dorky, even on an attractive half naked woman.

Ironically the first thing I thought about when I say Google Glass last year was making a sweet sextape with my wife!

Technology put to good use.

You mean nerdy. Isn't nerdy "cool" now? I see people people sporting fake glasses all the time. The thick dark nerdy frames are back in style also.

So aren't guys wearing girl pants. It still looks dumb.

Yes it does but it didn't stop the millions doing it. I see fat people in spandex running on the side walks all the time. I see bicyclists looking like Louis Armstrong that can barely make it up hills. People wear yoga pants to school and work.

You may not accept it but mass adoption will make it the new normal. It wasn't long ago that any of these new trends are considered inappropriate and weird.

But most look back on their old (insert fad here) pictures and say "what was I thinking back then". If it doesn't affect me personally, I just think it's weird, might say it, then move on. I can't wait for this giant hole in the ear fad to go away and see what those people do.

On a serious note

Record mode "ON"

With glass in live record mode, and it saves the stream to a cloud spot, then allot of things will happen.

Kids will run into other side locker room, for the whole school to watch and so forth.

Imagine if OJ Simpson wife was wearing one that dreadful day, or other such events of evil, that people encounter.

The future is so bright, we gotta wear shades (of Google Glass).

This is why there are so many 3rd party app stores
By tayb on 6/4/2013 5:22:39 PM , Rating: 1
I wish Google would stop doing this and put 3rd party app stores and shady distributors out of business. Just ban apps that are viruses, malware, or security threats and let everything else be. They accomplish nothing by banning these. Any person who wants this app will find it and install it on their own. The end result will be the same, people with Tits and Glasses running on their Glasses.

You cannot "ban" an Android app. That's the great thing about it. The makers of Tits and Glass can simply make the app available on their website, and anyone can sideload it onto an Android device. No need for a third party app store at all.

Sad that Google had to remove it from the Play store. But in today's extreme politically correct 'zomg I'm offended' landscape, did we expect any different?

Can't they combine this with a brain computer interface hairnet to record feelings ;)

The we would be getting close to Strange Days technology :)

But what did it do?

I read the article and still have no idea what this app did that Google found objectionable, especially in regard to what the base product already provides.
