The Wii off to a great start for 2007

Nintendo’s Wii continues to sell at a fast pace, outselling the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 during January. Market research firm NPD Group reports that consumers bought 436,000 Wii, while Xbox 360 sold 294,000 units, followed by PlayStation 3 with 244,000.

Nintendo is crediting much of its success to the broad appeal of Wii compared to machines from Microsoft and Sony. “I do think that we're selling to additional and different customers,” said Perrin Kaplan, VP marketing for Nintendo. “We've had an incredibly healthy start and we think there's going to be a pretty long tail on this product.”

Each console experienced a drop in sales when compared with figures from December 2006. The Wii saw the least decline when compared to its previous month at 604,200, while Xbox 360 saw the biggest decline from its 1.1 million units sold. PlayStation 3 also fell from its 490,700 sold during December.

The PlayStation 2 continues to be a strong seller, likely because of its price point, with 299,000 units—but down from the amazing 1.4 million during the holiday month. The Nintendo DS also loosened its grip, selling 239,000 during January—a steep drop from the 1.6 million during the gift-giving season. PSP also fell to 211,000 from 953,200.

Dollar LOSSES:

Wii: None
360: Some
PS3: Tons

Don't forget that Sony and Microsoft are losing money on every console sold.

Actually what matters is software sales. And with the PS3 having a tie rate of less than 1, Sony isn't going to be making any money soon.

On the other hand, Nintendo makes a profit on every console sold, and has a tie rate of 2. That means lots of cash to the bottom line.

Not true. We are talking about dollar sales, of which software sales play a major role. If you want to talk about dollar sales, try including the attach rate. This way, a more complete picture can be drawn.

Besides Zelda, there is Red Steel (I thought was pretty good even though kinda ridiculous, really good use of wiimote). Excite truck is fun as well as the other 4-wheel game, Wario Ware is good, Wii Play was recently released and adds nicely to the 'novelty' games that everyone enjoys. Metal slug is a blast on the Wii, haven't played new Sonic game but looks awesome. Tiger Woods should be really good as well even though it isn't coming out till March.

Finally March 13, TMNT...seriously.

Basically to say the only good game for the Wii is Zelda is ridiculous.

You're a fool

Simple math here:
PS3 cost more and will show more in sales per console because of this..

Loss ( or gain ) of profit - per console is more important.

Sony has to hope and lose alot of money at first to make more later. If they lose money and not enough ( because thy dont sell enough consoles ) they'll never make it back later and Devs will begin making PS3 Exclusives for other consoles ( We're already seeing about 6 major titles this year alone have been lost to 360 that were previously PS3 titles )

The question is.. On the list of "Exclusive Titles" How many more will be lost in the next year after 2007 ? My guess is enough ..

I'm glad I'm not in a business where people think that after losing money for over a year on every item I sold that I should drop the price as soon as I turn a small profit :)...would be nice though. I'd bet the core goes away, the premium goes to $299, and $399 gets you the larger HD, HDMI, etc. Built-in wi-fi would be nice too.

The real question is: were there any Wiis there a couple of days after you saw them?

I want one of the things, but everytime I look (anywhere) they're sold out. And I go look anytime I'm even near a store that has the things (or is supposed to, anyway...).

I'm not saying that they're impossible to find, and presumably some places are easier than others, but they're still difficult to come by for most people.

The problem is its was pretty close between the Xbox 360 and PS3. Thats not good because it does show that some people are willing to spend $600.00 on the system. I have to believe price drops are coming to the XBOX 360 soon because if Sony had more PS3's out there I bet they could have outsold the 360 and if it does you know SONY will hype that 10 times more than its worth.

While many of us can find a PS3 I have been in stores that it has been sold out of. I would assume not everyone can find them to buy them.

Microsoft should drop the price already. If not for competing with the PS3 but because those Wii's are cranking.

What? You don't have stacks of PS3s in your local Best Buy? Ours had a pallet of XBox 360s (about 40) that dwindled from 40 to 10 in the course of a week. The pallet of PS3s sat there for over two weeks with maybe 10 being sold.

No but several local stores have signs up saying sold out of PS3 but I can find them just shopping around. I would imagine some people dont try hard and if they go to those few stores they will think the PS3 is hard to find and is selling out. Not every consumer goes to the store next door to find a sozen of them sitting there.

I really dont agree witht his line of thought.. Being that PS3 has only been out for 4 months.. This is the time when PS3 should be selling its best based on its NEW, A Novelty Item.. Sort of like Wii.. So.. when an item is new like this it should be in high demand. When 360 was 6 months old it was still selling for 1200 on Ebay !

360 is selling at its 'normal' rate now .. and only holidays will you see a jump.. PS3 sales will likely slow a bit more in the coming months as most "Good" game for the PS3 will also be coming out on 360 ..

Wii is just going to sell well because this generation Nintendo has decent Dev support ( they didnt the last two consoles ) and it has something in common with PS2.. its price is afforable for the MASSES !!

I believe NPD only does North America... but I've been wrong before. I don't think this surge will last though. Reports out of Japan are that Wii is having a pretty intense cooling off period right now. Some analysts assume "the novelty is wearing off", but I think it's just that Nintendo gamers just want Nintendo games, and we won't be seeing another major release for a while...

That's actually what I'm afraid of. I picked up my Wii last week, and it is really fun. But I felt Zelda's use of the Wii controller was kind of contrived. At first, the novelty was kind of cool, but after 10 hours I would kind of prefer the tighter controls of a gamepad.

I mean, Wii Sports defintely feels great on the Wii controller, but I feel like the genre of games that works with the Wii-mote and nunchuk is pretty small, no doubt some fanboy is going to rebut me on this, but that's just my personal feeling. I mean, hey, I dropped $250 on this system, of course I hope it's successful.

Realistically, I would predict that the way it'll boil down is the Wii will be popular for party-type games and other fun gimmicky games, while the 360, and possibly (hopefully really - I liked Sony) the PS3, will be the console for the traditional console games. 360 is putting out some fantastic FPS games. And it's priced somewhat competitively with the Wii, and it definitely has some strengths that the Wii doesn't have, so there's no doubt in my mind that it's a great console. Really, the PS3 is all I'm worried about - hopefully we'll see Sony get their act together somehow.

By RandomFool on 2/21/2007 6:03:51 PM , Rating: 2
I've noticed that some games are using the motion controls just because it's there. But I'm confident once developers get used to the system there will be tons of games that work really well with the wiimote/nunchuck. It's just a matter of getting around the standard controller setup and thinking differently. I never thought a FPS could be fun on a console until halo came out and while the controls were a bit funky sometimes it worked really well.

You know, I think you can, and should, compare the Wii with the X360 and PS3. They are direct competitors, and when you get right down to it, the PS2 and Xbox3 are essentially hardware upgrades to their predecessors. They may have achieved that upgrade through architecture switches, but it's every bit as much an upgraded old console as the Wii is.

With lower development costs and a rapidly growing user base, it's definitely competing both for peoples money and playtime, but just as importantly developer attention. Whether or not you want to draw arbritary lines in the sand of what is next gen and what is not, economics will ignore that line.

Let's just forget for a Second that both PS3 and XBox 360 have mulicore CPUs and that their Graphics card and memory are much more advanced than the wii. Let's forget all the numbers. Just look at the best game for the Wii, "Zelda" and look at the exact same game on Gamecube. The look exactly the same 80%. Now look at "gears of war" and compare that game to the best Wii game. I personally think that $250 for an upgraded gamecube with a fancy remote is a rip off, more than the 400 bucks of the xbox 360 or the $600 of the PS3.

RE: sales figures...
By ViperROhb34 on 2/22/2007 8:36:24 PM , Rating: 2
Let's not forget when you forget all the talk about the cell processor that it is not any good with the PS3's slow bandwidth video card.

The 360 has a small amount of expensive memory built on-die GPU that makes a world of difference. Thats why in certain games like Tony Hawk Project and Call Of Duty 3 Xbox 360 has a smoother frame rate in really intense graphical areas.

Im glad that most of the world is not buying into the PS3 hype machine. PS2 truely as better then its competitors at launch.. Xbox was launched 2yrs later and more powerful then PS2, but didnt have the developer support that 360 is currently enjoying !

Developer support is where it all is in the end. Look at Wii this time .. It has plenty of games that Nintendo could've never enjoyed last Gen because of Developer support.
And that in itself might be a major downfall of Ps3 this time is lack of killer exclusives that PS2 had.

Sure PS3 will exclusives still.. but many of them will be the who gives a crap about the release of this game kind of exclusives.

I wouldn't care what you chose to play, except that if the Wii continues to be a success, Sony and Microsoft may release crippled gimmick consoles next generation aswell. The Wii is destroying gaming, why can't you see it.

Have you ever played a flash game??? Do you play handheld games??? Have you played on any console since their existance?? Why?? Their graphics could never compete with a computer's graphics. After at most 1 year any console is absolete in graphics, this gen they were beaten before coming out. If you make statments like the one above, you absolutly cannot own a console based on that.

So having fun on lower graphics is a distruction of videogaming?? Does that not apply to PS2 which had the worst graphics of it's generation, yet become the most succesful console ever, and even sell out really well when new generation consoles are out??

You say that the amount of graphics resolution is a bigger change than a change in the way you interface with the game??? I beg to differ.

By the way I don't own any consoles at the time (none of the new ones to be found in Romania and have sold my earlier systems cuz I had them in the states NTSC vs. PAL), but I owned both Nintendo's and Sony's consoles.

so is this good or bad news for microsoft?

i would think it's good news that even after more than a year on the market, they're still able to outsell the ps3. and i think they've said from the beginning that they weren't trying to compete with the wii. it'll be interesting to see what happens if/when microsoft releases their supposed refreshed black xbox w/ hdmi and bigger hd or sony drops the price on the ps3...

RE: microsoft's stance?
By robertgu on 2/21/2007 7:27:42 PM , Rating: 2
I was also wondering if this bad news for Xbox.

To me I'm surprised to see that a 1 yr console is able to outsell the PS3 that's still in its "launch euphoria" and is able to keep within 100k units of another console that's in it's "launch euphoria"; the Wii console, which is selling for less.

I would have expected the Jan. sells numbers to be: Wii sales being much much larger than PS3 which would be decently larger than Xbox.

Considering that many hit titles are coming out later this year for Xbox (Halo, Forza, etc.) and many developers that used to be Playstation exclusives now developing for the Xbox; it would seem that the future is indeed bright for the Xbox.

To me, makershare percentages will settle out close to ~40% Xbox ~35% Wii ~25% PS3 within the next year or so.

RE: microsoft's stance?
By mircea on 2/23/2007 4:10:30 AM , Rating: 2
I think this is really great news for Xbox if this continues just 4 months like it is for 2 reasons:

1. Wii is distroying the hopes of PS3 becoming No.1 so most developers will go mostly multiplatform, to get the customers Wii and Xbox has even though they were going for more PS3 at first riding the wave of PS2.
2. Resulting from developers making PS3 less appealing with little or no exclusive games, and because the price warr will always be in favor of the Xbox360, many people that thought od holding out for better games on PS3 will switch to Xbox360.

Actually this is what I think happened with the PS3 launch. Since it was creamed by Wii and had a tag price just a bit too high for most, those people that wanted only one console (but high powered graphics) or just 2 consoles (one high power and the Wii) and waited on PS3 decided that it's not worth it and got the Xbox360.

Also michael1980 stated that sites like DT are killing the PS3 momentum. I would like to point out that Sony killed it way before on E3 when they announced the price. It just about killed 60-70% of the momentum. Then they added the missing features on the controller to include the motion sensor, and the cut out of real technology out of the 20GB HDD not just a size shrink.

There is a lot of PS3 bashing, on this site in particular. I own a PS3. I don't own a 360 and probably will never buy one or a Wii. But personally I want all three to be a success.

The PS3's Virtua Fighter release has received stellar reviews and its overall line up appears to be looking good.

Sure there may be less development for the PS3 but as long as it has some good games for it I like my Blue Ray DVD player very much.

I hope they all succeed and there's no reason why all of them can't in my opinion.

just like sony having major problems with ps3, ms could face such problems. xbox360 is not inexpensive; ms needs to cut the price or at least update the bundles to gain the market share.

even sony is letting users to replace hdd with any sata drives & let users install linux; however ms is still charing like 100usd for a mere 20gbyte drive (i guess it is too much to ask for ms to let users install linux on xbox360).

if ms wants to dominate the market it need to let users use whatever sata drives or at least release add adapter for any sata. free internal hd-dvd drive would be nice, too.

As suspected for months, Mercenaries 2 will be coming to Xbox 360, but it will also be hitting PC and the aging PS2. The game will hit all platforms simultaneously for holiday 2007.

Neither EA nor Pandemic revealed the differences between each platform’s version of the game.

more ps3 games worth buying coming out. The ps3 will come out on top.

On G4.. there was a debate on this.. both sides ended up agreeing at the end that in another year PS3 would still be in last place mainly because of Developer Support and PRICE.
It will always be the most expensive system because the other console makers are making money and can lower the price anytime and defeat SOny in any price war.

You fail to understand games like Assasins Creed, Ut 2007 and several others were SUPPOSED TO BE SONY PS3 Exclusives.. Developers changed their minds because they understand the economics that a higher priced console is not sellable to the masses who make the large userbase that they require to make money back.

Ita a vicious cycle.. Devs Make less exclusives.. and people say.. why should I buy this .. whichmeans low sales.. low sales.. Devs say no again.. and keeps going.

The last time this happened it happened to Nintendo.. N64 versus PS2.. PS2 won.. Devs didnt want to spend money making titles for a console that used cartridges.. they had to eat the cost of the electronics in the cartridge.

Sqaure Enix has a MMO coming out for 360.. they have said its a possibility for PS3.. a POSSIBILITY.. all from a company who was in Sony's left pocket just a few yrs ago.. Seems like they want to play with MS a bit more now..

One more thing.. I know Sony has people to post at these boards to try and reverse the PR damage.. and make it appear people love this thing.. Do you work for them .. or are you just that stupid ?

I loved PS2, but im not blind.. PS3 cost too much.. the debate of how good a deal it is is just dead.. Tot he consumer who can barely buy a 300 dollar console.. 600 dollars is out of reach.. and with most title porting to 360.. and many have been reviewed to play smoother ( Like TOny Hawk Pro Skater, Call Of Duty 3 ) .. the playing experience is better on 360..

The ONLY place PS3 is selling "Good" ( If you want to call it good - it being outsold by Wii and PS2 ) is in Japan..

Xbox 360 is outselling PS3 in the entire rest of the WORLD ! LOL In Australia its broken console sales records.. 360 is outselling PS# in Europe and South American, not just North America.

Im a gaming fan.. If the PS3 was going to take off like PS2 it would've already been the best seller on "month to month" showing like PS2 had before. PS2 Dominated on launch..

The latest headshot to Sony's PlayStation 3 is the confirmation today by Electronic Arts that Mercenaries 2 will NOT be a PS3 exclusive as was once thought . Damn Sony, it must be hard out there for a pimp:

As suspected for months, Mercenaries 2 will be coming to Xbox 360, but it will also be hitting PC and the aging PS2. The game will hit all platforms simultaneously for holiday 2007.

Neither EA nor Pandemic revealed the differences between each platform’s version of the game.

Pandemic CEO Andrew Goldman offered in a statement, “All four platforms are incredible gaming machines, and from the beginning we designed an experience that accentuates their individual strengths and delivers the interactive freedom and explosive action Mercenaries fans demand."
