New Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai hopes to turn the TV business unit around after eight years of losses

Sony announced today that it is shaking up its management structure in an effort to avoid yet another year of losses.

Sony has definitely seen better days. Its TV unit has been the largest headache as of late, with eight years of quarterly losses. Last December, Sony decided to shake up its TV division by negotiating a buyout of its 50 percent manufacturing stake with Samsung in the LCD joint venture. It also split its TV division into three units consisting of sales of LCD TVs, outsourcing manufacturing to cheaper foreign facilities and developing future TVs.

In addition to TV-related woes, Sony took a beating in early 2011 when hackers repeatedly breached several Sony websites and services such as the PlayStation Network database and the Sony Online Entertainment database. Many customer records were stolen in the process.

Now, Sony is getting serious about making some changes. Early last month, the company named Kazuo Hirai as the new chief executive officer, replacing current CEO Sir Howard Stringer. Hirai, who is currently Sony's executive deputy president, will become CEO on April 1, but already has many new plans in motion for the company -- including putting himself in charge of the struggling TV unit.

Hirai has mentioned before that he is committed to the TV business. He believes that they are important in the Sony gadget ecosystem as far as playing the role of an output device, which allows customers to properly experience the company's content.

However, Hirai may be taking a big risk by putting his reputation on the line for the failing TV business. Sony has been losing to TV makers like LG Electronics Inc. and Samsung, who are both selling TVs rather well. Nevertheless, Sony set a target of 20 million TV sets sold by March 31.

Aside from the TV unit, Sony is making other big changes in hope of new beginnings. For instance, Shoji Nemoto will now oversee Sony's technology strategy and digital imaging and solution units; Tomoyuki Suzuki will oversee Sony's chip and device solution businesses, and Kunimasa Suzuki will take over product strategy, mobile phones and personal computers. Sony said it will make digital imaging, games and mobile its "three core pillars" of the electronics business.

Sony also cut two divisions at it main electronics unit and created a new business unit. The two to be abolished include the consumer products and services group and the professional device and solutions group. A new division, called the medical business unit, will be run by Executive Deputy President Hiroshi Yoshioka.

All changes will take effect on April 1, 2012.

Sony is a large multi-national conglomerate. Known for such devices as the Playstation, Walkman and Viao PC's.

Just in case you don't know. - Suprising how much the Sony name has fallen in the past decade, people always talk about that half eaten fruit instead.

SONY: known for things like plummeting stock prices, DRM, pulling linux support, awful PSN security, rootkits, hordes of proprietary memory sticks, and the very accurate historical portrayal of attacking the giant enemy crab's weakpoint for massive damage.


SimulView FTW

Putting SimulView-like technology in their Bravia line would go a long way toward making their TV's stand out among the crowd. Allowing for two sets of 3D glasses (with headphones) to display two different (2D) outputs would be a killer feature for in home 3D glasses.

That's the point exactly. No one cares about 3D, no one wants to buy the stupid 3D glasses. But SimulView is a much more appealing technology that uses the 3D technology (even and odd frames showing different output) for something that's actually useful (allowing two people to watch different things full screen at the same time). It's like picture-in-picture on steroids but all they have it on is the stupid little PS TV and it requires the PS3 to work. There is no reason they can't just integrate the different source capability into the TVs (just like picture-in-picture so like odd frames show HDMI1 and even show HDMI2 or similar).


Saving Sony TV

Here's an idea to save Sony TV's:

put bluetooth into the TV and related electronics like Bluray players and HT receivers and make an iPad and Android app that will enable them to use bluetooth to control the whole suite with a context sensitive interface. Might have to add ARM Win8 support later, too. The interface could allow you to control channel selection by genre, BluRay and DVD chapter selection directly, and volume control on a per-speaker level.

I bet it would sell. :)




When you OUTSOURCE, you lose

Simple as that SONY. Follow the American biz plan = failure.

When you outsource to a company like Samsung (who does make good products) to make your hardware, using their tech - then why would people spend an extra 10~20% for a TV with a SONY label?

My SONY VHS/DVD combo is 99% the same as the Samsung model (years ago) - I bought the SONY version for $10 more because (A) it looked a bit better (B) the remote is compatible with my SONY TUBE TV set. But such things matter less and less.

Sony, you set the bar high with the Trinitron tubes - which still LOOK great, for an OLD TUBE TV. I don't want to get rid of it - but will sooner or later. Will it be a SONY LCD? I doubt it.

But I checked Bestbuy just now on their 55" LCD TVs.

Theres a few $750~850 low-grade TVSs (house brand, Westinghouse), Toshiba is $1000, Sony jumps up to $1200 (As does Panasonic), Samsung jumps up to $1500. There used to be a time when Samsung was the "low-cost" quality brand.

There is very little difference between the $200 cheaper Toshiba. A tad heavier, weaker speakers. Samsung is LED, its almost 1/4 as thick and about 20% lighter (22lbs or so) with more powerful speakers.

Sony, is not a leader... simple as that.

I don't think Sony can do something about it when Samsung is so good.
I suggest they focus on higher end offerings let LG and Samsung take the rest of the TV LCD market.
One way to focus on the higher end is to offer higher resolution screens to display digital images for commercial and high end home applications.




Damaged Reputation

I think Sony's TV reputation is so far damaged due to their Optical Block fiasco in the early HD models and how they improperly handled it. Multiple class action lawsuits, tons of forums complaining about their products and little done to appease their faithful base. I for one have moved on from Sony and really don't expect to return. There is too many other good products out there that don't have such a negative history. I think the new CEO has his work cut out for him.
