More than one flavor, 'Montevina' is expected to show in less than a year from now

Previously, DailyTech reported that Intel's plan for 2008 would include a entirely new mobile platform called Montevina. To recap, Montevina will be based on Intel's upcoming 45-nm quad-core Penryn processor, and include a new chipset series that replaces the one in Santa Rosa.

Intel guidance this week revealed that a number of changes have taken place. Intel will offer two versions of its 2008 mobile platform -- Montevina Fundamental and Montevina Professional.

Montevina Professional:

Penryn-based
Cantiga GM/PM chipsets with ICH9M-Enhanced
Echo Peak 3x3 AGN or 1x2 AGN
Shirley Peak 3x3 AGN or 1x2 AGN
Gigabit Ethernet
Intel AMT 4.0
Intel VT-x and VT-d
Intel Turbo Memory 2.0

Montevina Fundamental:

Penryn-based
Cantiga GM and PM chipsets with ICH9M
Echo Peak 3x3 AGN or 1x2 AGN
Shirley Peak 3x3 AGN or 1x2 AGN

Several main differences between the two flavors are Gig-E connectivity, Intel's virtualization technology, and the inclusion of Intel's Robson solid state memory -- now called Intel Turbo Memory 2.0. Intel documents also indicate that May 6th of 2007 will be the official launch date for Turbo Memory 1.0, with 512MB and 1GB variations. As we outlined previously, Turbo Memory 1.0 will debut as part of the Santa Rosa platform, and move over to Montevina in 2008 as Turbo Memory 2.0 -- offering faster performance and larger capacities.

Montevina's networking capabilities include what Intel now calls Echo Peak and Shirley Peak, which are new codenames for Intel's combo Wi-Fi/WiMAX adapter and single Wi-Fi (802.11n) adapter respectively. Both Montevina platforms will be able to connect to Wi-Fi and the faster WiMAX technologies.

Montevina is expected to appear in Q2 2008.

ssd (64 gb needs to come down a bit in price...)

something better than 802.11g
new monitor standard

There's always something new and exciting on the horizon; sooner or later you've got to take your chances and invest in current tech or you'll be waiting forever.

I suspect that you already know that, though. :)

Unfortunately I am in the same situation. I'm looking to purchase a laptop that will reasonably last me four years - which is about how old my current one is. The thought of quad core in a laptop is what really caught my attention here. I do a TON of work where I have 2 or 3 VMs running at the same time on my desktop unit. I'd love to be able to do this on a quad-core laptop.

Technology is ALWAYS advancing... I suggest you to buy the best you can afford now. In the end, notes is like cars, we have to change it every year or two....

45nm on laptops equals battery life++, but how realistic is the Q2'08 date?

They've been sampling the 45nm versions I believe, and the chipsets are already out for reference- they were in the daily reviews a bit earlier. They also need to stay a step ahead of AMD, and with barcelona coming out in Q3, hopefully the changeover from 65-45nm in the new Core architecture will help increase efficiency to compete a bit more (esp w/ "stars" on barcelona's heels)

It should be about right...that's when AMD's 45nm is first due out, and it makes sense that Intel would plan a refresh for that timeframe.

New monopoly?

Microsoft was touted as a monopoly because it came with IE, will Intel be titled the same? If all their chipsets and reference designs call for use of Intel solid state memory, will this kick out smaller SSDs from the market and cause an outcry?

I answer No, yet admit this is a potent chip set including solid state memory to compliment a traditional hard drive. The question I believe you are asking is one I have asked before yet my question was in regards of vista ready boost, "will integrated solid state memory designed to compliment traditional hard drives reduce or eliminate the need of actual solid state hard drives like sand disc's recently announced 32gb speedy ss hard drive? I believe all this will do is delay the inevitable transition from using solid state memory to supplement traditional hard drives, to actually running all of ones programs/os off of a solid state drive in which in time there will be no comparison. Yet we will recieve hybrid hard drives containing solid state memory and traditional platters long before that becomes a "mainstream" reality. Intel once again is at the plate first with this tech which will immediately boost user's performance, yet we all logically know that this is a transition technology. We will have solid state hard drives in the near future, after that, phase change memory.

Yet another thing to wait for... very well, i'm not buying a laptop this gen.

Hopefully by the time this launches, tft/oled displays and mobile graphics would have advanced too, multi-point touch-screens became the norm, ssd drives and blu-ray recorders gotten cheaper, batteries stopped spontaneously exploding...

Whoever launches the first 14-15" tablet-convertible with all those features wins my money.

I've been on the lookout for a gaming tablet... yes, tablet, how weird is that? Not that I need it, but because of the cool factor. I've been thinking of getting the Toshiba or Gateway, the only two tablets with a vidcard until now... but I didn't like them enough. Both were out a long time ago, and I was hoping there will be newer and better options, and there were none. Now there's some light on the horizon.

2)Lets be practical -OEMs/ODMs/Notebook manufacturers need their time to get their products out into the market,
then the marketing of these products also takes time.
Dont expect the market to be flooded with these notebook versions immidiately.

3)Santa Rosa platform notebooks will flood the market in Christmas-major buying season.
Yes they will be available in the market before that also,
but the BIG SALES FIGURES come in DEC 07.

4)Prices for these notebooks,initially will be high & will gradually fall in the months ahead,reaching their low only around DEC 07.

All this is nothing NEW we all know it.
We all wait for the prices to fall before buying one.

So Santa Rosa platform are here to stay for quite some time-before we see the introduction of "Montevina".

Intel marketing is well aware of these marketing realities & take these factors into consideration.They know the market well.

They work very closely with Notebook vendors & even finance their marketing campaigns.

So they very well know the "TIMING FACTOR"- even if "Montevina" is ready they will keep it on hold,till such time notebook vendors agree to its release.

The logic is "YOU GOT TO SELL (a lot) TO RECOVER YOUR
INVESTMENT"-let it be Intel or the OEMs/ODMs/Vendors.
