The store is open 24 hours just in case you suddenly get the urge to buy an Apple product at 3:00 AM

Fifth Avenue in New York City now has an interesting new edition -- an Apple store that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  Before the grand opening that occurred at 6PM on Friday evening, several hundred people camped outside the store to be the first ones inside.  The new Apple store has a glass cube entrance and has almost 300 employees on-hand to answer questions and help customers, regardless of what time it is.  The store will have more than 100 Macs and around 200 iPod MP3 players for potential customers to drool over.  The San Francisco Chronicle reports:

“We opened our first New York store in SoHo in 2002, and it has been successful beyond our dreams. Now we’re thrilled to open our second New York store on Fifth Avenue,” said Apple CEOSteve Jobs. “With outstanding service and an amazing location open 24 hours a day, we think the Apple Store Fifth Avenue is going to be a favorite destination for New Yorkers and people around the world.”

Apple announced the store several months ago.  The store is defined by its 30 foot glass cube in front of the store.

Whats the point?

Apple has been making a somewhat steady comeback in recent years, but I honestly do not see how a 24-hour brick-and-mortar store will have any positive financial impact.

IMHO: I think it is as much an advertising medium as it is a retail store.

Exactly. At best, the store can hope to break even. I think they can do that too.

Everytime there's a new iPod release that place is going to be PACKED for days.

Its news because back in 2003 their shares were selling at $9 and were written off to go out of business. For them to open a 24 hour store in the city that never sleeps is huge. For them to open the store right next to Fao Schwartz on Fifth Ave is nothing short of amazing.

Apple has made an amazing comeback, something very few companies in any vertical have ever pulled off to such a large scale.

Why is this news?

"the Apple Store Fifth Avenue is going to be a favorite destination for New Yorkers and people around the world"

They should have a Duty Free counter-where I pay/buy & have it delivered to me at the airport before boarding my flight
The store will become a favourite destination for frequent/business international travellers ,with this particular service.

looks like the Louvre

the glass stairway down, spiraling, and the nice open view makes it just like today's modern Louvre entrance in Paris.

Beg, borrow, and steal. :)

Yeah, they opened a new apple store by me a while ago, they had people lined up all over the mall, but they were there for the free grab bags for the first 1000 customers. And the "almost 300 employees on-hand" are just there the first day. After that they drop down to a more reasonable number.

Just like Sony in Japan.

The equivalent of Sony in Japan. Everytime Sony releases a new Minidisc player in the past, people lined up for them in Japan's Akibara area.

Luckily Apple has not copied Sony's practice of releasing special limited color editions for more money. Also practiced by Nintendo.
