Still no support for the iPhone coming

Apple single handedly reinvigorated the smartphone industry and spawned a plethora of touch capable devices when it launched the iPhone. Since the original iPhone debuted, Apple has offered two more updated models of the device with the 3GS hitting the market last week.

One of the major missing pieces in the iPhone for many users is the ability to run Adobe Flash technology. iPhone owners have been crying for Flash support since the iPhone launched and still there is no version of Flash for the iPhone.

Adobe's CEO Shantanu Naraye announced at an investors conference that the next version of Flash will be Flash 10 beta and it will hit in early October. The new beta version will support almost every smartphone platform out there including Android, webOS, Windows Mobile, and Symbian. Notice the lack of iPhone support.

The availability of the beta coincides with the Adobe Max conference. The news is important for the newer Android and webOS devices that have lacked a good Flash player so far. Symbian and Windows mobile have been able to play Flash content for a while.

Adobe doesn't mention Flash support for the iPhone at all. With all the hubbub about Flash on the iPhone, the odds of something of that magnitude being pre announced are slim though. That sort of announcement is something that would take place at a press conference most likely.

Adobe says that ARM, NVIDIA, Broadcom, Qualcomm, Intel, and TI are all in the process of optimizing their hardware to support the new version of the Flash Player. DailyTech reported last week that HTML 5 is being hyped as a potential replacement for Flash and Google has shown a version of YouTube running on HTML 5 already.  The new standard is, perhaps unsurprisingly, being authored and backed by Google and Apple. Perhaps it will finally put an end to the iPhone's Flash issues.

There's just no effort put forth into grammar checking anymore. Surely you can type it up in Word and hit the little button!

I like MS Word and all, but I always turn grammar check off. Word would take that and suggest something like this as a correction:

"An issue on the iPhone is numbered, perhaps it will make the days of the lack of Flash a being."

Oh sweet Jesus... If you're dependent on Word to fix your grammatical errors, you're beyond help. The point of the tool is to find them for you. That way you can correct it before posting it for all the world to see.

This is not even bad grammar. Its just terrible writing. That is not even a complete sentence. My guess is that its someone who has a native language other than English. If they are a native English speaker then god help them...

That's kind of different. YouTube is delivered through an application. Same thing happens in WinMo.

Too bad you don't have the true picture.

YouTube on the iPhone app plays videos in h.264 format. And thus flash is never used. Also you can't view all the videos on YouTube because well they haven't converted them all to h.264.

Real reason apple doesn't want flash. Because they sell a lot of the movies/tv shows on itunes that you'd be able to watch for free with flash. Its simple anti-competitive practices but this has been apples MO from the get go.

Grammar and spelling aside, am I the only one that thinks that Apple does not want any sort of 'rich content' whether it be player or browser accessable on the iPhone? It would directly compete with a many nick nack apps that are currently found on the appstore.

Ding ding we have a winner. If they actually enable any rich content it would instantly make a bunch of apps obsolete. Think of the thousands of dumb little games that would not sell because of the free offerings online.


Adobe is incompetent

They have no idea how to port flash to a 64-bit browser. I'm fed up and would prefer anything else, even silverlight.

I couldn't care less for all the news about Apple.

Instead of doing a piece about the new technology and how its going to improve the lives of Nokia, other Symbian and WM users you bitch about the two year old phone with substandard hardware.

So, how are the updates being distributed? Is it going to be a normal application install or would the firmware have to be updated? Which OS versions are going to be supported?

I clicked on "Mobile Flash 10 Coming to Smart Phones in October" in the hopes of actually reading something about "Mobile Flash 10 Coming to Smart Phones in October".

But in every single paragraph there is talk about the anointed iPhone and/or Apple.

Get serious or at least don't publish articles under misleading titles. And stop wasting my time.

Flash isn't that important

I haven't missed Flash one bit on my iPhone. I'm not sure people are 'demanding it'. It seems like Adobe should care, as they are not on the most popular micro/mobile computing platform.
But to think Flash equals rich content is silly. Flash is a cheap way to get from A to Z. It is absolutely not secure. It offers one advantage, it's relatively easy to produce results with. Those results are most often wastes of time, (see intro movies to many, many. many sites that drive more people away with their Flashy intros than retain).
And one final question, has not having Flash on the iPhone hurt it in sales or performance? Has it suffered because of not supporting it? Do you think the iPhone would have greater sales numbers if they offered it? Like millions more sales, or just Flash developers?
I think perhaps we are seeing the end of Flash in site as a 'platform' or 'rich media' environment or whatever name you want to call it. It's best days were when bandwidth was a major issue, and that's not a problem for the most part. So why use it?

I own a Iphone and think it sucks we still can't do flash. Get with it Apple. The Iphone is almost perfect but Apple keeps somethings out that make it fall just short of perfection.

Perfection is an absolute, therefore it is not and can not be relative.

I think you mean "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", which is quite right here; apple products are for those with eyes, which come in many different varieties, to match.

Only because you ignored the implied meaning that everybody understood. Almost perfect ... for his needs/wants. And thus, yes, relative. The fit of my underwear is perfect. I suppose the only thing absolute about perfection is that it indeed is generally relative to ones frame of reference.

If iphone supports Flash, iphone will never be perfect. Flash just sucks. 90% of flash today are annoying ads. Apple could put some sort of adblock to block those things out, but it is not user-friendly to use.

720p runs fine on my P4 AGP HTPC.

is your C2D laptop using a discrete graphics adapter? Or common integrated chipset like intel GMA?

I have a three year old gateway notebook. Intel Core2Duo T5500 @ 1.66Ghz. Intel 945 mobile chipset. The sticker even says "Centrino Duo" for age reference.

Plays 480p Hulu video just fine. I even hook it up to my second monitor full screen while I do other stuff on the web and I still dont have any issues. My guess is that its your connection or some other component.

It doesn't work properly on Windows. Constantly asks for admin privileges to update... 2.5 years after Vista's introduction. And tries to run a process on each startup without user authorization (legal but very bad manners!).

Does it even surprise people anymore that Apple can be so clueless? It takes them until 2009 to make a phone that supports MMS and cut and paste? My ancient Siemens phone I bought in 2003 has those features. Only now introducing an SD reader into their Macbooks? Non-Mac laptops have had those for years.

I seriously don't understand how Apple can make products that are so good in so many ways and yet are such utter failures in other ways.
