Gears of War to go head to head with PS3 launch

On Monday, DailyTech reported that Microsoft’s Richard Teversham was sticking to the corporate line of attacking the PlayStation 3's price and pointing out the XBOX 360's clear price advantage and head start in the market. Teversham also noted that Microsoft had a few surprises in store to counter the mighty blow that will likely be thrown by the PS3. Today we know what at least part of that counter offensive is: Gears of War.

Microsoft confirmed today that Epic Games' Gears of War will launch on November 12 in the United States; just ahead of the PS3's November 17 launch. With Halo 3 still about eight months away, Gears of War is the best chance Microsoft has at stealing some thunder. Bill Gates was quoted in Time Magazine as saying that the PS3 would "Walk right into Halo 3," but Gears of War will have to do for now. From

The company declined to state the obvious about the launch timing - preferring instead to remind us how many trade-show awards the game has picked up so far - but it's made no secret in the past of its desire to upset Sony's launch plans… Whether it's still "perfect" - as Gates envisioned the clash of Sony's next-gen console and Halo 3 - remains to be seen, but hype is certainly on Gears' side, and the game's likely to shift huge quantities amongst the Xbox 360 hardcore.

Epic Games co-founder Mark Rein has been in the news recently for his rather harsh criticisms of Intel’s efforts (or lack thereof) in the graphics industry. He blamed Intel for the current lull in PC gaming and for preying on consumer ignorance when it comes to graphics accelerators.

-Giving up on Japan?

I think it's a well known fact that the Japanese don't care for FPS games. So Gears of War will do nothing to counter the PS3 launch in that market.

So is MS giving up on Japan for this generation? I've heard them say they aren't, but I've not yet seen any big news about Japanese games or developers. Maybe I'm just out of the loop though.

Nighty Nine Nights is releasing soon. So is Blue Dragon. I believe there's a couple of other games also releasing before years end from Japanese developers.

Ninety-Nine Nights was so boring. i tried the demo the other day and it looks just like any other hack and slash game. wee i can have a computer control another hero or i can direct squads to their deaths.......

Are any of these games going to be "antilaunch" titles against the PS3? Are these games generating a lot of buzz among Japanese gamers?

Those aren't rhetorical questions. I really don't know.

Japan is also fiercely loyal to Sony in a way that American consumers are not with MS, it will be a success in that market regardless.

Actually Japan is far more fiercly loyal to Nintendo nowadays. In fact Japan is more loyal to Japanese companies in general then most countries around the globe.

Who cares about Japan?

Why even bring up Japan?

Japan doesn't buy American consoles because of nationalism. The Sega Genesis for example, was popular worldwide but not in Japan. Why? Because the company of Sega had American origins! That's how far they take this sort of thing.

It doesn't matter what games MS has in Japan, Japanese people will never buy it. Why people haven't realized this in what, 5+ years of Xbox consoles is beyond me by now. Why people harp on it even further is beyond me (not, I know why they harp on it, they're Nintendo/Sony fanboys).

Not too mention the Japan market, already the smallest, is shrinking because the Japanese population is aging.

And Japanese developers no longer have the pull they once did. A system such as Xbox proves you really dont even need them at all in any big way. Western games like Madden football, WWW2 shooters, Halo, are the top sellers of any platform. Japanese devs are still important, but they're no longer crucial, they're more like one factor among many.

I think Xbox proves you dont need Japan to succeed. Europe and USA are bigger markets. In fact a console could do fine in USA alone if you think about it.

I care about Japan because:

They have great developers-

They have a lot of power in the consumer electronics industry even beyond consoles-

I'm actually a bit tired of the "standard" American/European games. I can only play so many FPS/RTSG/RPG games. I'd like a little variety in my gaming diet. I would love it if I could buy one console and get all of them.

I haven't bought a XBox360 for a few reasons.
1. I can't stand playing a FPS with a controller. (Hence I use a computer.)
2. I don't like sports games.
3. That's the grand bulk of what's on the 360 right now.

Now if the 360 had a mouse/trackball and a larger library of non-FPS/Sports games (which basically means Japanese developed nowadays) I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Hence why I'm curious if they've given up on Japan.

PS-I know there are non-Japanese developers that make innovative non-genre specific games, but I'm talking about the grand bulk of them.

Im with you man..

My cousin lives 2hrs away.. we both play Halo online.. as well as both have Oblivion ..

WE both had PS2 at one time.. and the gaming experience is much more then the game.. Sony has work ahead of it trying to catch up with Microsofts superior online gaming..

We discussed it alot and like many who could probably afford the PS3 we've both decided to not get one.. as many others have said they won't.. I don't doubt they will sell alot of PS3's - more in Japan.. I seriously doubt they'll ship the PS2 volume with that price point, not to mention lack of titles and developers like Camrack (ID) saying they have doubts about the console because its not friendly to program for..

Have you heard of Dreamcast made by SEGA? Why do you think it died out so quickly in the US? Because the US companies made crappy games for dreamcast while the Japanese brought out a lot quality games that are much better than just western FPS or sports game. I personally have over 150 dreamcast games, and most of them are imported from Japan. If Japanese have that big ego you're talking about, why the hell would the Jap companies still made games after it died down in the US when nobody in japan buys the console?

The japanese don't buy xbox because the games are crappy and not for their taste, it's got nothing to do with nationalism. The americans games are only focused in the US market while the Jap games are appreciated over the world. Remember the Final Fantasy series?

Final fantasy, Mario, Zelda and Sonic all of these are franchises of the most video games ever. Notice all of them are from Japanese developers, you are certainly right about Japanese games being popular globally.

Halo on the other hand is popular in the US and to some extent Europe.... thats it.

Plus the nail was hit on the head, that Japanese gamers simply dont like the constant stream of mediocre FPS and sports games. They have been there done that some many times and are looking for something new and fresh, this is the possible reason for the new DS renaissance in Japan. Where they are flying off the shelves faster then they can be produced.

>>Final fantasy, Mario, Zelda and Sonic all of these are franchises of the most video games ever. Notice all of them are from Japanese developers, you are certainly right about Japanese games being popular globally.>>

Dude, whatever. Thos franchises couldn't save Gamecube, despite that MS had mostly western titles on Xbox.

They're still big, but my whole point is they dont decide anything anymore. If you look at the top selling USA games they are mostly Western now. Like Grand theft auto, Halo, Madden Football, Splinter Cell, etc etc.

I didn't say Japan wasn't a factor, only that they are no longer the decider.

In terms of Sony vs MS about all Sony has that carries a lot of weight is Final Fantasy and Metal Gear (although the last Metal Gears did not sell a ton either, MGS 4 is getting a lot of hype). Sonic is on both. The others are Nintendo exclusive (and again, didn't save the Gamecube.

If you had to say what are the two most important franchises in the World right now, you'd probably have to say GTA and Halo.

Another case of the clueless.. Many games for the 360 are Japanese.. And now that Squaresoft, which in the past made exclusively for Sony, is releasing many of the same games for 360 that it will PS3 does your point matter ?

Or does it matter that a best selling Japanese RPG named Enchanted Arms developed by a Japanese company will soon be out for 360 ( 8/29/06 ) ..

Their are many more lackluster titles and even lack of titles for PS3's launch .. just see how slowly the titles come with the lack of developer support as many are already saying they don't like PS3

I don't think Square-enix has made an announcement that they are making alot of the games for Xbox 360. They are making so far 1 game (Project Sylpheed) and so far Final Fantasy XIII is going to PS3 and Dragon Quest to Wii.

Enchanted Arms was Xbox 360's best selling Japanese RPG game. 1st week numbers from Famitsu was around the 12000.

Ask Ford and GM how receptive the Japanese are too foreign products. While I'm sure those companies sell in Europe, I'm sure that just like Xbox they sell near zero in Japan. The Japanese are very nationalistic about their heavy industry. That is why your Levi's and McDonalds analogies dont exactly hold.

Or you mean to tell me, somehow everywhere else in the world Microsoft is a fine console and seels pretty good, but somehow in Japan it sells virtually nothing as if I dont know, there was some blackmail against it?

And you sure cant say MS isn't trying. I shudder to think how much money they've wasted in Japan. They've probably spent like 1000 dollars in advertising for every console sold over there. Plus they do have/had a lot of Japanese support, such as enchant arms, 99 nights, DOA series, Ninja Gaiden blah blah. Certainly enough that there is no way you can justify them selling as pitiful amounts as they have, if there wasn't something else going on.

I dont even know why I'm arguing with you. It's obvious I'm right and you know it, everybody in the world knows it unless they're blind or lying to themselves.

Ford and GM cars aren't built for Japanese. It's mostly big, less efficient, has bad MPG, etc. Try driving on the narrow roads in Japan with a Mustang.

Well, Apple's Ipod has 50~70% market share compared to Sony's 10~20%. Microsoft has 90% for computer OS. McDonald's has 60~70% of hamburger chains.

Support? Alot? Hmm... about average 5 new releases each month and mostly are FPS, sports or racing games and even some are ported games. Maybe 1 major title released between 1~2 months. It'll probably get more big title games later on, but unless the Xbox 360 sells more in Japan, then the Japanese makers will go elsewhere like the Xbox.

Also, the advertising. I'm hearing from many people that the Xbox 360 commercial sucks and needs to be more creative. The majority don't even know what commercial it is until the Xbox 360 logo comes out at the end.

Squaresoft isn't giving its crown jewel to Xbox360, namely FFXIII. To say that MS "bagged" them is stretching it. FFX2 had already been ported to the PC so being ported to the 360 was, well, not all that special.

Yeah and you know what? Xbox will still sell zero in Japan, because the Japanese are racist.

The only thing I would do if I were MS is give the symbolic middle finger to Japan, then proceed to dominate the rest of the World. They're not needed anyway.

Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yoshiki Okamoto, and Tetsuya Mizuguchi made their own companies and they aren't actually recruited by Microsoft. Except Sakaguchi, the others are working multiplatform.

Okamoto made one of Xbox 360 launch title "Everyparty" which only sold 641 on it's first week. He's working on "Genji 2" for the PS3.

iPod was a gimmick, google was a gimmick and various other popular things have been or were gimmicks before they became popular.

Gimmick is the word used for products that have yet to become popular. If the Nintendo Wii sells great, then the word gimmick will strangely be replaced with Cool and Innovative by everyone in the media and populus in general.

Is the DS Lite still a gimmick nowadays? no, it has great games which take advantage of the unique features that make it more then a gimmick, it makes it unique and very fun.

Plus: Considering that The Wii is being launched with some 30 games (Zelda, Red Steel, Far Cry, GT Pro, Tony Hawk, Metroid Prime 3, Madden, Dragon Quest, Super Monkey Ball, Trauma Center, Rayman, Call of Duty 3 and many more).

I think Nintendo is going into this all guns blazing, plus they still have great franchises in the wings for Q1-Q2 2007, such as Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros Melee, i'd say Nintendo is in a very good position right now and there are certainly many games that are and will take advantage of the unique features of the Wii the same way as the DS.

To bad this launch will be on the backs of people who bought a gamecube. A lot of the launch games are just delayed GC games that they decided to move over to this marginally better console. (Zelda Anyone)

Yet the Nintendo Fanboys are in full flight jumping all over this new console. They probably could have just rode out the GC with a new controller since graphics dont matter to people who play nintendo games. Remember it is all about gameplay. The original mock up of the new controller was running on a GC. They could have released a better network adapter with a couple of Gig flash memory drive built in and had every ninturdo idiot salivating.

Maybe. But then the rest of us wouldn't be as interested as we are. Guess it's hard to believe, but some of us keep a PC for the latest & best graphics, and are more interested in the games when it comes to buying a console. I mean what's the point in buying a console that wants to be a PC when you already have one?

yeah and Virtual Console, Wifi, much improved graphics (have you even looked at the games?) can all be extended from the gamecube /sarcasm

The PS3 and Xbox 360 are merely the same console, with the same games, but with better graphics. You keep telling yourself that graphics are everything about games and stick with the $599 PS3 with the 1080p graphics, that run poorly and use the pethetic PS3 dual shock controller with no rumble and a very limited tilt sensor.

You could release a PS2 with improved graphics and have every Sony idiot salivating, oh wait... too late. Or you can buy a $499 Xbox 360, that has the same games as xbox but in HD and nothing more. Im sure everyone just loves to play FPS's and Sports games on the Xbox 360...

Sony Idiots/Fanboys are obessed with graphics, Microsoft Idiots/fanboys are obsessed with FPS's and Nintendo Idiots/Fanboys are obsessed with gameplay.

If i had to be one, i would be the Nintendo Fanboy.

GameCube's dead. Who's buy an add-on controller for their dead console? Very few people. There's a massive history of this - Sega 32x, mega cd, jaguar cd, and so on. This is simply not an option, to think otherwise would be to admit your own moron status to the world.

Also the GameCube's game ports didn't have the bandwidth available to handle the new controllers.

Also the Wii is at least 50% faster. It'll help, not a lot though.

And Nintendo will still sell it for a profit. Yes, it's GameCube 2, the relaunch, but we're not going to mess it up this time.

By ElFenix on 8/4/2006 6:06:48 PM , Rating: 2
the power numbers are only 'marginally' (2x to 4x better is hardly marginal) better when compared to the zany inflated figures that sony and MS throw out. remember, the GC was just as 'marginally' more powerful than the N64, but it'd be stupid to say that the GC didn't look much better (and arguably some of the best looking games for the previous gen of consoles were on GC).

what is the point of power if it's impossible to get at (like on PS2 and PS3)? nintendo figured that out, and made the GC easy to program. if the Wii is just as easy to program for, the developers can wring more out of the hardware.

I agree. Nintendo is being incredibly underestimated by both Sony and MS. They seem to think there are only 2 players on the court, and they are organizing their strategies only to counter each other. Big mistake. I think Nintendo is going to dominate the next generation of consoles by a huge margin. I already know of tons of people who are guaranteed buyers, while on the other hand all by my most tech savy friends have been un-impressed by the 360 and the far-too expensive PS3. Right now, Nintendo is on a course to deliver the big 3 at launch: Quality Games, Price, and Availibility. I hardly think 1 game from MS is going to touch that even in the slightest, and PS3's will sell out but only until people figure out they have nothing to play on it.

RE: Where's their response for Wii?

I agree in the fact that nintendo is being underestimated by microsoft and $ony. It seems sony will not underestimate nintendo as much as their psp is getting crushed by ds in global hardware and software sales and they happened to come out with tilt sensitive controllers for ps3 that they had intentions of producing long before the WI's controllers were anounced, ha, or not. I feal its a good time to buy an xobx 360 as there manufacturing is more solid now even though they haven't switched manufacturing processes yet. Ps3 will have something chronically go wrong with its tremendously terrible yielding cell processor and brand new blue ray drive, just as the xbox 360 suffered from the simple choice of using foil around its heatsinks instead of thermal paste underneath them. The wi won't have such issues as its not a super high end console, nintendo will do well, but the conventional systems have competition between themselves.

By sxr7171 on 8/3/2006 11:44:48 PM , Rating: 2

Yeah, but PS2s sold out and kept selling even though there was nothing to play on it. People are just Sony crazy.

As for these other two not having a response to Nintendo - they just plain can't. They both have their heads so far up their asses about hardware and graphics power at this point that they can't fathom that a lesser powered more fun system with fun games could touch them.

By Xavian on 8/4/2006 5:09:35 AM , Rating: 2
I believe Sony only started really selling PS2's once they reached the $200 mark, however we really dont know if a good portion of those sold were not simply replacements, considering the nortorius failure rate of PS2's.

But i agree, the problem is they really dont know what to do and i believe they have been caught offguard and flat-fotted by the sheer repsonse for the Wii at E3. They had pretty much counted Nintendo's Wii out as being a niche product, but maybe they are themselves in danger of becoming the niche product.

All i can say is there is going to be a big shake-up of the industry after this war, people are already suggesting the Wii could win the upcoming generation, certainly everything is in place and all the cards now seem in favour of Nintendo.

But we just dont know if it will appeal to the mythical non-gamer or not. If it does, Nintendo has a phonemenon and pretty much automatically wins the war. If it doesn't Nintendo could drop to third party, which would be a great shame. Theres a lot at stake here.

Sony's needs the PS3 to sell Blu-ray to come out of the red, if blu-ray fails it will be a massive disaster to Sony so they are trying every trick in the book to get to sell. Microsoft would like for the Xbox 360 to finally make some money at some point. Both Sony and Nintendo have everything to gain and everything to lose in this war, thats probably why Sony are incredibly arrogant when it comes to the Wii.

A poll in Japan said that people were more wanting to buy Wii over PS3 .. I think price is a big factor.. as well as most people in this world still have regular tv's .. You can't enjoy the graphics of a Xbox360 or PS3 much without HD TV..

I think some parents will put out 299 or 399 for a Xbox360 this Christmas for their kids.. but more will likely get a Wii... Just think at the price the Wii is shipping for.. you can even buy several games and accesories..

A few of us in my circle of friends who have a Xbox360 have intentions to get a Wii.. and at that price I dont feel I'll be disappointed ..

It's true the initial polls showed a massive downfall for Sony after E3, but as time passed more and more people were going over to the Sony camp again. My guess is that the wound Nintendo got from GC still is fresh, people just don't want another "First year only" system.

In short, no:

Not only that but it's basically confirmed to be coming to 360 as well. Which is big because UT2k7 might be my single most anticipated game on any platform. If it was PS3 exclusive that would have been a huge selling point of PS3 for me, but now it looks like my 360 will get it anyway.

It will also be fascinating to see which console handles the game better. UT2K7 seems graphically well above most 360 games, and the modified 7900 GTX in PS3 should handle the game like butter. However, UE 3.0 seems to take to the 360 hardware well, and Gears of War looks great, so it will be fun to see the two different versions.

Yes, especially when I've heard while PS3 can do 1080p .. the bandwidth of its memory can't handle 1080p well in very detailed games and maintain the framerates ..

With Xbox 360's current games utilizing only 1/3 of 360's power.. 360 can no doubt do alot more..

It's sort of like looking back on other consoles.. Anyone remember how 'ok' looking SNES games looked until Donkey Kong Country came out and showed its potential ?

I think Gears of War will at least show what Xbox 360 has in store with Next Gen games.. Devs have to essentially learn how to program for each console.. and everyone knows PS3 has potential, but Devs are saying its very hard to program for when it comes to using that potential

I think that's a bad example, DKC looks like crap compared to "ok" looking games like SMW, even though DKC uses higher resolution sprites and whatnot.

Screenshots make it look a lot better than it is. I even took a moment to play it to jog my memory, and it still looks somehow subpar. I think it's the poor animation.

Ahh, I remember DKC

Man, that was one of those games that was such a graphical leap you thought never possible on that system! Almost like next gen on current gen or something. It was amazing. I miss those days.

The SNES stared slow with a lot of slowdown problems, but it certainly had a lot of untapped power in the end (certainly much more than the Genesis).

Hmm - so you're saying Q4 is sluggish on purpose only using 1/3 of the 360. Somehow this seems odd :-)

I for one don't think anything Microsoft does will ruin the launch for the PS3 excepet perhaphs if they start giving the 360 away for free.

Surely Gears of War will sell but how lame is it holding it back to work as a marketing weapon. It's not like there are lots of great 360 games to choose for - mine is just collecting dust and has been doing so for some months now :-(

How are they holding it back for marketing?

If anything if you've followed this game you'd no they are rushing to squeeze it in for the holidays at all. There's a funny video of CliffB looking a little scared when Bill Gates asks if Gears is sure to make this year (was on a TV special). And also joking a lot how he will lose his job if the game doesn't make it this year.

Nope, I am quite sure they are holding off the release as long as they possibly can, while still under mandate to make the Christmas season as the big weapon against PS3.

If you saying that current 360 games are 1/3 the power of the 360, then the lauch game will be 1/7 of the true power of PS3.

This silly - I will like have both Gears of War for my 360 ( as long as disk doesn't fail later - as with Tiger woods ) and the PS3 in November. I personally have no desired for Wii.

As for UT2007, I will have both on the PC and PS3.

Wow, so all of a sudden the PC is shunted from gamers' views? It's the PC that leads the video gaming industry in terms of technology, not the consoles... The UT series was on PC originally and should stay on PC, it's definitily not going to become a "console exclusive".

Im sure its people like you that said that Final Fantasy will always be on a japanese console. If enough money is thrown at these developers and publishers, they will make their soul exclusive.

Uuhh, right now I have a 9700 pro on a AGP system buddy. You think money grows on trees? And there's no good cards left on AGP anyway.

But that's beside the point. Too be honest I have the money and skill to upgrade my PC as needed I suppose. But it will still be cool to play this on a console.

But I agree, the PC leads in technology. A top notch PC is already clearly theoretically more powerful than PS3 or Xbox360.

But what you need to understand is that because of piracy and never ending upgrade cycles, the big money is on consoles, so you're going to see more focus on them in the future. That is why UT2k7 is hitting near or at the same time as PC, and why Carmack has chosen the 360 as his lead development platform.

Yeah right.

It's coming to 360, as sort of an "open secret". For right now Epic is just playing word games.

Hell look at the Gamespot story I linked earlier, it's from Epic too and all but confirms a 360 version.

Sony just probably paid them to not talk openly about the 360 version yet, or even maybe a timed exclusive. Is happening right now the same way with several other high profile games such as Assasins Creed (confirmed for PS3 but an open secret to be on X360 as well) or Oblivion (not confirmed yet, but heavily rumored to be PS3 bound.).

This game is gonna sell a billion

All this politics is fascinating! Gears versus Wii versus PS3, great stuff.

I think it'll all feed off each other. You cannot overshadow a hardware launch with software (because hardware is far more important than software and always has been, ask Nintendo, makers of great software but ever diminishing console share because they dont make good hardware). But Gears will at least just help everything sell. There's going to be so many people buying.

It's a bit sad I guess though, there are only four games I'm really intertested in for 360 the whole rest of the year: Gears, FEAR, Rainbow 6 Vegas, and Brothers in Arms. Possibly COD3 (if it actually makes the holiday), Viva Pinata (just for curiosity value) and Forza 2 if it makes it. Not coincidentally those are all the graphical blockbusters.

By epsilonparadox on 8/3/2006 6:57:05 PM , Rating: 2
The gamecube didn't fail because the hardware wasn't good enough but because there wasn't any impressive 3rd party support. 1st party support can only do so much.

So, your saying that the hardware will sell the software for Sony (w00tface, blu-ray! MS is pwned!)
and the software will sell the hardware for 360 (Gears of War, Halo 3)
And Nintendo will get a piece of action for being unique and inexpensive, comparatively

By protosv on 8/3/2006 10:37:48 PM , Rating: 2
It's interesting that Nintendo is actually releasing the Wii contrary to your logic. They know that they're not technologically superior this time around, so they're aiming to sell consoles based on the overall gameplay experience rather than the pretty graphics. Not to mention that the new Zelda will be a big seller for Nintendo any way you slice it. I hope their strategy works, because we're beginning to see more and more powerful consoles that are coupled with only a few really enjoyable games.

About the American vs Japaneses thing: It's like apples and oranges. The cultures are pretty different, and thus the game preferences are very different. Both cultures have a slight xenophobic streak when it comes to "Made in the USA" or "Made in Japan". Because MS focuses on its home market, it does much better there, and because Sony focuses on it's home market, it will do better there also. It's not that complicated at all. If you have a taste for Japanese style games, you are going to lean somewhat towards PS3, and if you have a more American slant, you will be more likely to go 360. This is all mostly because of the style, type, content, and playability of the games availale on the platform than the platform itself. The hardware is not NEARLY as important as what the game developers can do with it to make the gaming experience one you enjoy.

PS3 Bluray Read speed ? ! ?
By ViperROhb34 on 8/4/2006 12:17:23 AM , Rating: 2
Does anyone know if they specified yet what speed the PS3's Bluray player will read at ??

It's been widely assumed that the Blu-ray drive that will make it's way into the PS3 will be single-speed. If true, this choice could be disasterous. Blu-ray single speed transfers data at a constant rate of 36Mbps (Megabits per second) or 4.5 MBps (Megabytes per second)... not good.. DVD single speed is rated at a little over 1.32MBps max. A 12X DVD, such as the one in the Xbox 360, transfers data at rates between 8.2 and 16.5 MBps for an average of around 13MBps. Math shows some serious concerns looming with a single speed Blu-Ray drive. So, all things being equal, a 20 second load-time on the Xbox 360 would equate to just under 60 seconds on the PS3!

At 2x Blu-ray can read as fast as 12x DVD’s minimum read speed. At just 3x Blu-ray is comparable to DVD at 12x; through the first half of the disc 3x Blu-ray is faster, through the second half of the disc 12x DVD is faster.
And at only 4x Blu-ray manages to best a 12x DVD’s maximum read speed by 9%.

RE: PS3 Bluray Read speed ? ! ?
By jimmy43 on 8/4/2006 2:18:13 AM , Rating: 2
I know that 2x drives area already available, but considering the huge loss Sony is taking with every PS3, you may be sure they wont provide anything extra that is not necassary to do what has been advertised. If going from 2x -> 1x saves even $10, that would be add up to alot of money for sony, and wouldnt make a lot of differnce in anythign else other loading times.

RE: PS3 Bluray Read speed ? ! ?
By ElFenix on 8/4/2006 6:09:06 PM , Rating: 2
PS3 games will most likely use the hard drive that comes with all PS3s to reduce load times, the same was the original xbox did.

at least, that's what i'd do if i were sony.

I agree, to an extent.

PS3 and Wii are going to sell out anyway though. All Gears does is shift more Xbox360's. In that sense, it cant really lose.

But to think it's somehow going to "beat" PS3, no way. A game cant beat hardware for hype factor.

It's also probably better looking than any PS3 launch title, which will probably shock more than a few consumers.

I dont know what all is slated for PS3 launch, but certainly none of it looks all that impressive too me, although being on average of better graphics than the X360 launch titles no doubt. I still want a PS3 though, just kinda doubt I'll spring $600 for it. I'm sure a lot of people are in the same boat as me.

By ViperROhb34 on 8/3/2006 10:59:57 PM , Rating: 2

Yeah, but alot of 'everyday' folks who bought tons of PS2's at 249.00 can't afford a Xbox 360 .. MS has done well to ship 10-12 million in one year at that price.

Now Sony is asking people to buy their console. Many will.. but not the incredible numbers PS2 sold on their launch which included a DVD player which had been the standard for 3yrs.. and already had hundreds of titles out for.. Right now Bluray has about 5 titles and compared to 50+ HD-DVD movies and they don't even look as good as HD-DVD..

I attribute current good PS2 sales to their 129 dollar price ( Bestbuy ) .. and of course FIVE yrs of good titles..

It's one reason Wii looks to do well.. People like one thing.. THE PRICE ! Its cheap and has good graphics on a regular tv.. most people have regular tv's.. Some people think Xbox 360 games look barely better till they see the same game on my wide screen in HD .. detail makes a huge difference.. but with so many having regular tv's.. they don't care about PS3 or Xbox 360..

PS3 to slow industry .. become 3rd place

By epsilonparadox on 8/4/2006 12:28:48 PM , Rating: 2
There are many rumours going on aboot MS's anti-Sony launch tactics. There's another one going around that MS will bundle the external HD player w/ the 360 at the $399 price point and the one w/ out at the $299 price point basically dropping the useless core edition or drop that to $249 to compete w/ the Wii.

We've all heard this Microsoft banter before, blah, blah, blu-ray sucks, Microsoft is great, etc. Let's see if the PS3 pans out first before making any huge assumptions.

Considering PS3's cpu fabrication problem, it will take some time to build faith in Sony. But, I'm not ready to concede anything to Microsoft yet, in their attempt for world media domination...
