The i-mate Ultimate 7150 has it all

The folks over at Engadget managed to come across some pictures of i-mate's swanky new Ultimate 7150 Windows Mobile 6 Smartphone. The device flips and swivels and features a QWERTY keyboard for quick data entry.

The phone measures in at 4.33" x 2.91" x 0.70" and features a 640x480, 3.8" display. Processing power comes from a 520MHz Intel processor which is backed up by 128MB of RAM and a 256MB ROM. Connectivity options are plentiful and include Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, 802.11b/g wireless and GSM/UMTS/GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA.

Other features include a secondary OLED display on the front cover of the device, a 2.0MP camera, microSD slot, mini USB 2.0 port, integrated GPS, FM radio and a 1400 mAh battery.

Although there is no word on availability for the device, prices are expected to fall between 700-800 EUR ($915-$1,046 USD). Now if only they could ditch that wretched gold color ...

It's a little smaller than a DS lite (5.2" x 2.9 x .85)

they should've placed it beside something common to compare the size better. the picture makes it look bigger than the actual dimensions would suggest.

Why not just actually read instead of looking at the picture? Take the numbers they give you and use something near you to get an idea of the size, say 1/2 of the 8-1/2 side of a piece of legal or letter sized paper(in the USA)? That is pretty much how long this phone is...

OK, you have a good idea there. Now take that piece of paper and cut it to the dimensions 4.33" x 2.91" and then draw boxes on it for the keyboard. Now imagine trying to type on that. Ooooo, that should be a treat.

IMHO the best you can do at this size is a thumb keyboard like a Blackberry. You would need some pixie fingers indeed to multi-finger type on this keyboard. In fact, I bet my finger tip would span more than one key.

I'll wait till I can put my hands on it to pass judgment. But, my first look opinion is that there will be a better interface developed for this type of device. Maybe the iPhone has the right idea. We will see.

Well, it's a little closer to 4x3, but I agree, it's not much wider and actually thinner than my PPC-6700. I'd be very interested in this if I could get it for closer to $400-$500 with a contract. Looks like I'd be off by a few hundred though.

That keyboard looks like something from the 80's. It's not bad looking when closed though.

This is actually a screen shot from a Vic-20 portable.

Yeah which means it works. The best keyboards ever made came out of the 80s...

256MB ROM !!!
By Mezo on 2/16/2007 12:29:50 PM , Rating: 2
is WM6 that big :( , I guess there is no way for using WM6 other than buying a new PPC , that sucks !!!!!

RE: 256MB ROM !!!
By kkwst2 on 2/17/2007 5:29:24 PM , Rating: 2
I don't think it means that WM6 takes up 256MB. The ROM isn't really ROM in the traditional sense of the word, but in the non-volatile memory where the OS AND you programs are stored. So 256 is more than most devices. The 128 I believe is all volatile stuff you would lose if the battery goes dead. Starting with WM5, the OS distinguishes between memory remaining for storage and programs. I think the 256 ROM would be the storage memory, and the 128 for running programs.

For comparison, both these figures are twice what my PPC-6700 has. So not revolutionary, but certainly a significant incremental upgrade.

i don't thnk so

If the front cover looks like that, it's pretty cool. Not great looking, but cool that it shows the vitals and time on the front cover.

Considering what some UMPC's sell for, this isn't that bad, for a full featured cell phone. It would be a PDA on steroids.

For people who would need it, $1000 is a small price to pay for something convenient that you can do Excel and Word on. It's much more convenient than pulling the laptop out to punch in something quick.

Amount of RAM?
By sdsdv10 on 2/16/2007 12:48:55 PM , Rating: 1
Why so little RAM (128MB)? I'm assuming their aren't using high end DDR2 modules, so why not up it to 1GB or more? Or is 128MB enough....

It's not a computer, it's a smartphone. Besides, it already has 256mb ROM if that's what you mean.

Take my Razr... please

Yes I want one of these...

Looks perfect except for the exterior color but I can live with that.

OLED screen
By glenn8 on 2/16/2007 2:24:29 PM , Rating: 2
That OLED screen (if it does look like that in real life) is cool looking. I hope more devices implement that. I've always liked that "the case is the screen" look.
