Market chard  (Source: iSuppli)
Intel's control of the global CPU market has increased even further

Market researcher iSuppli recently released a new report indicating Intel's control of the gobal CPU market has reached a four-year high during Q2 in 2009.

"Intel benefited as the global PC market took a first small step toward recovery in the second quarter, with global shipments rising by 1 percent from the first quarter," iSuppli analyst Matthew Wilkins said.  "AMD didn't benefit from the small sequential rise in PC sales because its average microprocessor pricing was lower than that from the first quarter."

During Q2 2009, Intel's dominance reached 80.6 percent, which is a slight increase from the 79.2 percent from the same time last year.  The company saw CPU market share gains  across the board, with an increase in desktops, servers, and notebooks.  However, only notebook CPU sales saw an actual sales increase from Q1, iSuppli notes.

Last month, Intel raised Q3 financial numbers, with company officials predicting an increase in overall buying trends.

Even though Intel's marketshare increased, the global economy hurt overall CPU sales, with global shipment noticeably lower than in 2008.  Despite the economy, Intel launched Nehalem for higher-end PCs and servers, with Nehalem CPUs for four-socket servers on the way, Intel said.

They got me...

Went from a 5000+ to a core i7...
Didn't like having to do it, but I love the new chip

I went from an Opteron 165 to a Core 2 Duo. I haven't found a reason to go back to AMD or even upgrade from this. I think I am waiting for the 6 core processors from Intel.

Was thinking of going from AMD to Intel but todays release of the sub $100 Athlon II X4 will probably keep me on the green team. Damn i5 motherboards cost as mush as three quad core processors.

If you're looking at $100 cpu's you probably wouldn't be looking at tricked-out P55 Mobos. Considering that newegg has several P55 mobos under $100, I'd like you to show me where I can get quad-core AMD's for around $33 each.

Do you mean the Core i7 motherboards? P55 motherboards start out around $100 and go up based upon bells and whistles. You can build a Core i5 upgrade for well under $400 assuming that you only need a mobo, CPU and DDR3.

I've been holding out for AMD to come out with something that is competitive at the high end but phenom II doesn't cut it. While it is almost as good as the low end i7s it has nothing on the higher end ones. Maybe their new architecture will be better. If intel had better business practices I might have got one of their CPUs but they don't have moral business practices so I'm not hopping over the fence.

Yeah, you go right ahead believing that.

As far as gaming is concerned, the Phenom II X4 965 is on par, and in some instances capable of outperforming even the top line i7's, with the exception of a few optimised for Intel processors. If you're after a gaming rig, it's worth considering the X4 965.

But for almost every other task, the i7's flat out destroy anything AMD has to offer.

For me personally, the biggest let down for these AMD parts is power consumtion.

All of those shiny new Macs people bought recently came with Intel chips as well. I'm sure that helped.

If Apple went with AMD for their x86 supplier, the cpu landscape would've been quite different today. While I'm sure Intel would still be the majority cpu maker, the split would've been much more even as Apple should've brought more cachet to AMD.

Here at Cisco, they've been offering Macbook Pros as alternatives to the Thinkpad W500/T400s over the last year. They look really shiny and all, but then everyone ends up installing Win XP on vmware fusion anyway - which is hilarious and quite retarded. My W500 has better specs than the Macbook Pro and is about $500 cheaper. Considering the majority of Mac users probably don't do anything particularly taxing on their macs (HD video encoding, gaming), they probably should have gone w/ AMD to save the consumer a couple of bucks in the end. iTunes and MS Office don't really require much more anyway.

And just where are the AMD dual core mobile CPUs that deliver good performance AND are low power enough to allow a 5-7 hour battery life in a MB/MBP?

Just because someone runs Windows under VMware Fusion doesn't mean they would have been better off with a PC notebook. Now, if running Windows is their primary task, then I would question them choosing a Mac. However, if they primarily use Mac applications, and just run Windows part time for compatibility with specific applications, then the MB/MBP is s very nice option.

Now, what I find ironic about your post is that someone at Cisco is talking about Apple being expensive and suggesting a lower priced alternative. Have you looked as Cisco's price list and competing products?

Cisco, you can buy better, but you can't pay more.

Not to mention the netbook explosion. Although dirt cheap that is a lot of market share.
