Flagship Softbank Store

People lining up for the iPhone the day before launch

The 3G iPhone launches in Japan

On July 11, the iPhone 3G launched in Japan. The phone went on sale at 7:00 A.M. at the flagship store of Softbank Mobile in Harajuku. Avid apple fans had already started lining up the day before to beat the crowds that besieged the store on launch day.

Just before the launch, Masayoshi Son, who heads the Softbank group, said "I've been saying this year marks the first year when cell phones will become Internet machines".

Considering how poor the web browsing experience is on my own phone, a Sony Ericsson W51S, the internet browsing capabilities alone may be enough to make the iPhone stand out in the competitive Japanese cell phone market. The first-generation iPhone was never sold in Japan.

At 7:00 A.M. white smoke shot up in front of the store and curtains were pulled to reveal huge iPhone 3G images on the store walls. The person who got the first iPhone posed with Masayoshi Son as pictures were taken.

Softbank Mobile is currently the only cell phone provider to offer the iPhone in Japan, however, the contract is not exclusive and other companies such as AU and NTT Docomo are working to clinch deals with Apple. The 8GB phone is priced at 23,040.00 yen ($215.00 USD) and the 16GB model will cost 34,560.00 yen ($325.31 USD).

Although interest in the iPhone is high as a recent survey showed, the iPhone could face an uphill battle in Japan where cell phones contain features specific to the Japanese market. The iPhone does not have the ability to take advantage of 1seg which allows cell phone users to watch television. During my daily commute, I often see commuters taking advantage of this feature. The iPhone also does not allow users to pay for goods using the Felica feature. This is a feature that even my Sony Ericsson W51S has.

The fact the iPhone lacks these features may be meaningless as Apple products have a way of dominating the market even if they are not the best when compared feature for feature.

16GB so cheap?

Is the price for the 16GB version correct? I just don't see the 16GB model being less than $15 more than the 8GB model.

Unless either Apple or the carrier are even more heavily subsidizing the higher capacity version to be more competitive. For Apple this would make sense to get market penetration. Or for the carrier maybe they believe higher storage capacity would mean more data usage and therefore more service charges?

Wow, if that price difference isn't a mistake, everyone would just go for the 16GB model.

I wish we could be like Japan. AT&T being the iPhone exclusive carrier makes it suck because their plans are way too expensive now.

At least AT&T is better than Canada's Rogers Wireless when it comes to iPhone plans though. lol I really feel sorry for them...

Well, I feel pretty proud of our skills at publicly shaming a company now. Rogers has announced two new way lower-cost plans for iPhone owners. One at $30/month and one at about $40/month. They both still include much too little in the way of data (400MB/month for the top plan) but it's better than nothing. I'll stick to my Motorola, thanks :)

The 16GB price is a mistake. The correct price is 34,560.00 JPY = 325.317 USD right off the Softbank website. http://www.softbankmobile.co.jp/ja/news/press/2008...
