Google Fiber expands its footprint within Kansas

Google installed its Google Fiber Internet service in Kansas City, Kansas last year. The incredibly fast internet service has proven to be popular with residents in the area and with businesses looking to launch services that need superfast connectivity.

Google announced this week that it has now made plans to extend its internet service to the suburban town of Olathe, which has roughly 125,000 residents.

Installing the service in the new city marks the first major expansion of Google Fiber outside of Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri. Before Google Fiber could launch within Olathe city limits, the city Council had to approve the proposal by Google (the city of course approved the decision).

"Hopefully, this is the first of several announcements that we'll be able to make about bringing Google Fiber to additional cities in the KC metro area; so stay tuned," wrote Rachel Hack, a Google Fiber community manager, on the company's fiber blog.

Google Fiber cost residents in Kansas City $120 a month for high-speed internet and TV service. People who only want the high-speed internet pay $70 per month. Within Kansas City, Google also offers a free internet service with 5 Mb/s connectivity for a one-time $300 fee.

I am a malware expert and thus the thought of catching malware from a website I have been visiting for years does not scare me. Even if I were to catch something new, I keep all my data backed up, so I just wipe my machine and start over. And with all the online porn I look at, if something like that were to happen, it would have happened by now.

the 'more information' link in the chrome warning page lists the domains that the malware came from and the amount and type of malware google was given, if that helps.

How about expanding OUTSIDE of Kansas? Like in other states?

They have. They are also deploying the fiber network in Western Missouri, specifically Kansas City Missouri and it's surrounding towns.

You see, there are two cities named Kansas City. One in Eastern Kansas and the other in Western Missouri. They border each other and are considered to be a part of the same metropolitan area with Kansas City MO being the anchor city.

What most do not realize is that google analyzes all the traffic and data sent through its fiber network to suit advertising and sell it off to other advertisers for a big profit. No thanks. I'll keep my stable 30Mb (cable) service at $55/mo...
