"Final Flight of the Osiris" - Masterfully done by Square Pictures
Complete Matrix Trilogy comes with free Animatrix for Xbox Live

The Matrix Trilogy is hitting HD DVD on May 22 and is arguably the most significant release thus for the format. In conjunction with the release Microsoft, an exclusive supporter of HD DVD, is giving those who purchase the Complete Matrix Trilogy and have Xbox Live a special bonus.

Inside packages of the Complete Matrix Trilogy are “tokens” to download the entire Animatrix series from Xbox Live Marketplace. The bonus not a part of the more expensive Ultimate Matrix Collection because the Animatrix films are all included in that set’s bonus material.

Also part of the promotion for the Matrix hitting high-definition is that on Xbox Live from May 15 through May 25, free content like HD trailers from all three Matrix movies and favorite scenes like "Bullet Time in the Subway" and "Morpheus fighting Agent Smith" will be available for download in HD.

Those without HD DVD players but enjoy watching high-def movies courtesy of the Xbox Live Video Marketplace will be out of luck for the Matrix series. The original Matrix movie is available for download, but only in standard definition.

The Ultimate Matrix Collection will be available for $119.99 SRP and The Complete Matrix Trilogy available for $99.99 SRP this Tuesday. Blu-ray Disc versions of both collections will be released later this year.

Why would I buy the ultimate collection if I get the same stuff with the complete collection? Not that I'm going to buy either, but hypothetically speaking.

Assuming you didn't have an X360, you wouldn't.
Or wanted the physical Media, and didn't want it on your X360's hard-drive - maybe you've filled your 20GB Hard Drive?.
I assume there is a bigger difference betweeen the two versions that that, for example, extra concept art or something.

Too Bad

The sequels to the Matrix really ruined it for me. And there's no way the trilogy is worth $100. Hell, attaching the second and third movies should make it cost less.

Exactly. How about just the first movie and an abject apology by the Wachowski Brothers for the last two.

If you don't have an HD Player yet...

You can buy the HD-A2 for $299 (which you can get for 10%-12% less using BB coupons) you get to pick either the Matrix Complete / Ultimate AND two HD-DVDs of your choosing.

This is in addition to the already running promotion of getting 5 HD-DVDs free via mail. All in all, a great way to start one's collection.

Great news for HD-DVD owners. I'm definitely getting this on Blu-Ray when it comes out in the Fall.

Lobby Shootout

I saw this last night by accident. The famous lobby shootout scene can be downloaded in beautiful 720p. :) It's a really nice scene for showing off HD - lots of little bits of shrapnel and debris that get visibly sharper at higher-res. Definitely makes me more interested in the HD versions of the films...
