"Star Wars: The Old Republic" may not be released until January 2012

Analysts announced earlier this week that EA has invested over $80 million in the development of BioWare's first MMO "Star Wars: The Old Republic." 

"Star Wars: The Old Republic" is a new massively multiplayer online (MMO) game that is currently under development by BioWare and LucasArts. The game takes place 300 years after the events of "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" and thousands of years before Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, which is a fairly unexplored era of "Star Wars" chronology. 

Users will be able to choose from many different character roles such as Jedi or Sith, and give context to their personal story with the option to follow the light or the dark side of the Force. In addition, players can join friends through the game's battles.  

Now, EA has reported that its total investment in the "Star Wars" MMO has reached $80 million in development alone. 

"The contribution from the 'Star Wars' MMO is significant," said Michael Pachter, Wedbush Securities analyst. "Under the terms of its deals with LucasArts, EA is required to pay a royalty, but was required to front all of the development, marketing and distribution costs, as well as the costs of building out servers for the game. We estimate that LucasArts’ share is 33 percent of revenues, after EA recoups its investment in game development. Given that the game was in development for over four years, with an estimated 200 full-time developers working on it, we estimate that EA's investment exceeds $80 million.

"Fortunately for investors, the company expenses R&D spending, meaning that its revenues on sales of the 'Star Wars' MMO DVD will be pure profit. EA will be required to spend marketing dollars on the game, and we estimate total manufacturing, marketing and distribution spending will total around $20 million, meaning that at two million units sold, EA will generate $60 million of operating profit on the DVD sales." 

Pachter also noted that EA will not need a certain number of subscribers for "Star Wars: The Old Republic" to make a profit. 

"We estimate that EA will cover its direct operating costs and break even at 500,000 subscribers (actual number is closer to 350,000 subscribers), meaning that with 1.5 million paying subscribers, EA will have 1 million profitable subs," said Pachter. "We estimate that the incremental operating cost for each subscriber above break even is around $5 per month, so if the revenue split is 33 percent to LucasArts ($5 per subscriber per month), EA will be left with $5 per subscriber per month in operating profit. At 1 million profitable subscribers over the last six months of its fiscal year, EA should generate $30 million in operating profit from subscribers." 

EA also announced this week that the launch of "Star Wars: The Old Republic" may be delayed until January 2012.

Has to have pvp, Has to have some safe guards as most free loot games are just gank fests with top players hanging around noob towns to kill and steal easy loot from beginners, Needs to have more solo game play in mmo, Not everyone wants to be going on raids all the time but still want to be among online friends/gamers.
WOW seems to have it down pat, Just wish they would give the graphics a major boost next expansion, It's looking very outdated against other MMO's, And now that new budget systems/pc's are starting to have onboard Direct X 11 I don't see what can holding them back.

I'm pretty sure Blizzard has the resources to do whatever the hell they want. But why would they bother? When your product is crack, you just want your client base to be addicted. You don't care if they are addicted to high-end stuff or not, because they buy either way :)

I disagree. As a 'Mech fan, a MechWarrior/BattleTech MMO would be more interesting, but the BT universe doesn't have a good base for 'roaming solo', grinding and such. What would you stomp around and shoot? You can't just go ravaging anything because in that Uni you only engage other units when necessary. If you were defending a planet, a merc or enemy unit would need to make planetfall every 5 minutes or so - Boring.

On the same note, what the heck would you do in a counterstrike mmo? For a successful mmo you need a huge map base that is difficult to explore the whole thing. Thats one of the things that initially made WoW so engaging, the scale of it all. You need elements like enemies to grind on, places to go, and alot of ground to cover. STO is lacking in places to go really because the galaxy map appears limited at this stage. EVE is huge if you take a look at their starmap, but your always fresh meat almost anywhere you try to explore. Aion is slick.

We need something fresh and alien, but based on some kind of lore. It really has almost "all been done". The only true thing to focus on is blockbuster hits. But Star trek has theirs, Star Wars is coming. Matrix would be tricky, LotR has kind of happened. Wow covered the fantasy storyline. Elder Scrolls did their part. It appears that all that is left is the Comics.. but what to grind on...
The Homeworld story comes to mind, but no. Command & Conquer might be a good base. I can't think of anything else.. It would need unique and VARIED enemies to grind on.

The same thing was said about Blizzard before WoW came out. Frankly if ToR can't beat WoW, only the next Blizzard MMO stands a chance.

Star Wars as an IP is worth more than the Warcraft IP, but Blizzard is a big name in the gaming world. They haven't made a game yet that wasn't a massive hit. It seems appropriate that Bioware would be the only other company in recent memory with an RPG resume capable of competing with WoW. The jury is still out on ToR, but so far it seems like it has a chance to do just as well. Time will tell. Truth be told they could probably do an MMO based on Mass Effect or Dragon Age and make some cash too. Mass Effect would be a fun universe to explore for sure.

Have any credible source that backs that statement up? Steam reports that only 6% of it's users are running Intel video hardware. 92% are running nVidia and ATI. I would think that Steam probably has a similar user base to WoW.

ATI and NVidia make motherboards with integrated graphics, so the number of people integrated graphics is probably higher.

I'm with you -- is the "market reality comment" based on ones own opinion or is there an article floating around with someone in the know (ie Blizzard) stating that?

I tend to find it hard to believe especially because I am a wow player of almost 6 1/2 years (though I haven't played much for 2 months now)... I'm in a guild of nearly 500 players (not characters...PLAYERS...we half almost 800 "characters").... and a huge number of those players have tricked out gaming machines. More evidence is the LFG tool...which for not players is a tool to throw dungeon groups together it pulls people from both your realm and other realms (realms are servers in WoWspeak). Anyway in LFG formed groups if you ever get to chatting it up about what system you are running 95% of the time its almost always either half decent or state-of-the-art...I never hear anyone say "nah I'm just running off the mobo graphics"...

Here is another take on it: each major release Blizz ups the graphics. So on my 2560 x 1600 monitor, buying the fastest single card GPU each year, I still had to turn down the settings so I do not lag out when things get tense.

Guild Wars 2 is going to set the new bar to beat, no doubts there. SWTOR seems over hyped and will likely under deliver, with few new features. GW2... yeh, it looks to shake up the whole concept of an MMO... so GG industry.

I am in the same boat most recent MMORPG's releases have been WoW clones(Like Rift) those that were release previosuly have be WoWified(LOTRO,EQ2) that sytle of mindlessly simple game play has ruined the genre at the same time lowering the bar on future MMORPG's.

It has to have a MASSIVE galaxy to explore with hundreds of worlds.
The graphic has to be top notch, but since it's been 4 years in development, i'm afraid on that side.
Then i HAVE TO be unemployed for a couple of month to have the time to play that game.

i had pretty much given up on MMO's but am really enjoying rift right now.

if this new star wars can really pull off some deep exploration i would give it a shot.

I've been following the development of SWtOR... It's gonna be big, they will reward exploration, there will be PvP (it will NOT be free loot) (?). There will be both PvE and PvP servers. Lots of similar features to WoW and some differences.

Maybe someone answered this.. they aren't updating the graphics engine because they would need to revamp all maps and models. It would also cause technical issues for players that have happily been playing since Vanilla on a pentium 3 or 4 with integrated graphics. Hardcore gamers can go get Crysis and tack on the MechWarrior Living Legends mod..

I say they should work on a Graphics upgrade that is optional. that way, players who need to justify the cost of their rigs can upgrade their game to HD status. Hey I'd do it too..

I would MUCH rather have KOTOR3 then a stinking game like this. Not only do they charge you to get the game, they also charge you to play it. I have no plans to give them any of my money.

Give me KOTOR3 I say. Now, is there any word on a kotor3 release....

In a world full of piracy, I think more and more games are going to have some sort of online component to try and counter the piracy. Although the game could still be had illegally without an authentication check (which is much more difficult to compromise (although still do-able by the hard-core)) to prevent this. Even Valve said that they don't foresee releasing anymore standard Single-Player games (don't have the link right now) and that all of their games are going to have some sort of online component.

By producing an MMO they're essentially laying the ground work for a KOTOR 3,4,5,6, and on without you having to wait years/months between each release.

I'm somewhat stuck in the middle - although I enjoy MMOs, I also enjoy my strong single-player Western RPGs (specifically from Bioware) and I'm worried that this concept isn't going to work in an MMO Universe, especially since I may not agree with the choices that my group makes if we're sharing the choices.

Also, I like to save, reload, and check the different paths on difficult questions - this isn't possible on an MMO which I guess gives more credence to a real-life situation, but I'm not playing the game of LIFE! Sometimes I just want to see what happens if I choose this way instead of this way.

They are leapfrogging a few HUNDRED years ahead. Whatever happened with Revan and the Exile is now ancient history. The creation of SWTOR makes it even less likely to see additional single player content.

I don't agree with you that the world is full of piracy. If there is a good game, even if it's SP people will buy it. PC games is complicated as it has to combat with the console cloud.

They're estimating 100k/developer/year. That is really high for the industry. Even with benefits, their average should be no more than 60k, with less than 10/200 making twice or maybe three times that.

The common estimate is that an employee costs 50% over payroll. If they're paying 100k/employee that's 66K salary, which is overpaying.

Not just because everything about this game sounds bad to me, but because there is no room for a gorilla of this size new to WoW. I really don't know why EA is pumping this much money into the project and why they think this team (with quite a bit of MMO failure behind them) can hit it big.

I'd really like to see Turbine re-do Asheron's Call - the same game - just with updated graphics and a modern UI/Chat system. I'd like to see the story start over from the beginning. If this happened, I'd jump in no questions asked.

This probably wouldn't happen though, as I understand all the people who created the original game have moved on.

Turbine did a great job with LotRO. I'd be surprised if they don't have something more up their sleeve coming relatively soon.

I dont really understand the accounting numbers. It sounds like they will make a profit by ignoring the 80 mil spent in development somehow. Maybe these are the same accountants that are able to say there is no inflation in our economy. Gas keeps going up, food keeps going up, aw, those are too unstable, lets just ignore them and calculate inflation some other way.
Anyway, doesnt matter to me if they make a profit or not. As far as I am concerned,the game could fold in the first month. I absolutely refuse to play MMOs.
Bioware went to the "dark side" when they sold out to EA and turned KOTOR into an MMO. And the quality of their games has been in steady decline ever since.

If it was an expense in previous quarters then loss is taken from income that came from other games. Further the money spent is now a sunk cost and considering the amount spent previously is irrelevant to how much to charge now.

Not a bad plan, there's still a sizable population that will at least try anything with the Star Wars name. SWG, even if it were running and not down with the rest of SOE, is pretty dated at this point as well.

With that much outlay, the game should be up a while in any case, it will take time to recoup their costs.

Well, you can count me out if EA is the company behind it. I'm a pretty big MMO player, but I won't touch EA products. they mistreat their employees, don't properly support their products, and screw over their customers with products that won't work right. If they were to concentrate on putting out a quality product, listen to their customers, and treat their employees properly, they'd do a whole lot better.

Isn't Blizzard making more money than EA with far fewer people?

I say they should take their time with this..if that means Q1 2012 or even Q3 2012 so be it. A quality game is worth the wait, a rushed game is not worth playing sooner.

From all the press (and trust me in the PC game word this Star Wars MMO is getting a LOT of press on the gaming sites and PC game magazines...they are treating this game as a HUGE deal...) it looks pretty solid. I haven't played in the beta though...all my opinion is on what I read and screenshots.

Its got my interest solely because I'm really getting tired of the same old same old from MMOs...everything is about swords, wizards, dragons and elves type settings. I'm dying (not really but it sounds good) for a MMO with the production values of WoW but for the love for the love of all that his holy --- NOT set in a traditional fantasy world.

Give me a "space marine" type MMO -- with guns, tanks, ships...traveling to other worlds...blowing stuff up..running mmissions getting rank promotions which bring benefits...flying your own ships instead of griffons or dragons, etc.

Until something like that or very close to it comes out -- Star Wars is the only "good" looking (but not just meaning graphics) MMO on the horizon that doesn't focus on the traditional fantasy world setting.

As long as the game gives us places to hang out, like cities or bazaars, I think it could attract the casual MMO players as well as the more intense ones. In WoW I did enjoy running around cities and interacting with strangers. In EQ, Eastern Commonlands was a great hang out. EQII's hang out spots seem to change with each expansion, but it has them. I like that. It gives me someplace to go at the end of the day.

I dunno, Bioware is at the helm... The creators of Boulders Gate, Neverwinter Nights, StarWars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect and Dragon Age just to name a few.

If any developer is going to take on WoW, then Bioware is probably the best developer to do it.

Need not forget Jade Empire, and MDK2

Although we need to mention that not all of Bioware's games are great... NWN was a let down to me, NWN2 wasn't worth my time. Lots of people didn't like Jade Empire although I enjoyed it, possibly because I'm into Chinese Mythology. KOTOR2 wasn't as good as KOTOR1 - Dragon Age II was a huge disappointment compared to Dragon Age Origins, etc.

Like a poster below said, their trend is that their games are getting worse and worse. I'd even argue that Mass Effect 2 wasn't as good as the first...sure it had better combat and graphics, but what happened to the RPG nature of that game. Scanning the planets was mind-numbingly boring (I'd rather drive the mako) and the weapon customization was lost.

Compared to Blizzard who's games seem to only get better possibly because they have a small portfolio and they take years to complete a game. Diablo -> Diablo 2 -> Diablo 3 (unreleased at this time). Warcraft -> Warcraft 2 -> Warcraft 3 -- Progressed instead of regressed. Starcraft -> Starcraft II (I never played the first very long, but I just finished 2 and it was pretty amazing in my book). Let's not forget that Blizzard has announced they've been working on another MMO as well - who knows what that'll be.

Don't post unless you know what you are talking about.

Both Neverwinter Nights 2 and KOTOR2 were created by Obsidian, NOT Bioware. However, I enjoyed both of them even though they were not as awesome as the original.

But the fail that is DA2 is concerning. Bioware rushed a very short sequel out and only created about 1/3 of the maps that would be needed due to constant recycling. I liked the eye-candy, but everything that made DA:O special was deleted in the complete consolification of DA2. It just felt like a big expansion, not a whole new game. Yeah, and chargin $60 for it. I feel ripped off now.

That said, the development cycle for SW:TOR is about the same as DA:O, so this could be a win and a sign of Bioware getting back to their strengths. If not, you can probably scratch that developer off the list of must-buys and consider them to be more EA shovelware.

SWG started out great in my book. What made it bad was the so called combat upgrade, the "lets give everyone a jedi" attitude etc.

It was pretty good, and the space expansion pack was bombing.

SOE also more recently threw money at Vanguard and Matrix Online, that's hardly a significant factor.

It is pretty likely that EA will push release dates so Bioware being involved isn't all that significant either, it'll be shallow to save development time like all of EA's recent releases.

Right on, KFC. I'm looking forward to GW2 but it hasn't been released yet and doesn't count toward the the denting blizzard factor.

I still find time to play WoW and let me tell you I would LOVE to shelf it and enjoy another MMO game. I have high hopes for GW2...I liked the original Guild Wars except for the lack of it having a persistent world where players could meet and GW2 is supposed to have that, plus no monthly fee. I'm sold. Oh yeah, it needs to have a solid PvP system and world pvp. I'm a griefer.

Well you don't know how well or how bad this MMO will be since you never played it. I hate WOW find it one of the most extreemly boring games ever made.

I much prefer Warhammer online just for the fact there is no other MMO that offers anywhere near as good ORVR that it does, its got PVE to but you don't have to ever do any to lvl up, hate PvE grinding in any MMO.

How things would have been different had deal for Blizzard to make Warhammer games not fallen through all those years ago, explanes why Warcarft is so heavely influenced by Warhammer.

Honestly I'm for all or nothing models...

If you are going to be free to play...then be FREE to play..period...don't charge me for buying premium gear, access to other classes/races or anything. Free to play should mean 100% no strings attached free to play. I will accept on free to play guality mmo having to pay for *major* content updates though, I'm fine with that but note the word *major* -- run of the mill everyday patches should not cost anything.

Conversely if you are pay to play -- just have a flat rate per month (along with your discounts for peole buying 3 / 6 12 month plans)..but don't have a silly "purchase game currency and then spend the game currency to level your character" type model...that's a dumb thing.

I've no qualms for shelling out a monthly plan for an MMO -- but yes I will be much more strict on your MMO if you are billing me monthly for the right to play it...so be aware of that.

You seem to be out of touch with reality. The people who make the game have bills to pay and profits to reap. The freemium model works well for most games. People who want to pay for added benefits can do so, while cheap-asses can still play the game in an un-crippled form without having to pay a dime. Why would you alienate one group or the other when you can basically cater to both with little compromise?

First point out where I said anything against the developer not profiting from their game....I never said anything of the sort.

How much experience do you really have with MMO games? Because your view is very naive...

If anything the model you endorse -- is nothing but alienation written all over it.

Players are very sensitive to how you "geared up" or "got your skills" in most any MMO I've ever played...and you think the model where you can just BUY better gear, unlock more powerful classes, etc. with real ca$h doesn't or wouldn't cause massive rifts between players in the same game.

Those games now with those models are not taken seriously at all by the more devoted MMO gamers who respect challenge and the concept of earning what you get.

Again...the monthly rate is fine..the plan has been successful for arguably the some of the most well known and successful MMO's use the monthly model with great results....WoW, EQ, UO...even Champions Online (I don't play that one) I believe uses the monthly model and that game is doing quite well also.

So either the monthly (aka "WoW/EQ" model) plan or the free model (aka "GW" model) is the way to go to create the best environment where no one is able to buy their success.
