Feature was left out of the WWDC keynote, but could find its way into the public release of iOS 8

It was reported last month that Apple is working to bring split-screen functionality to its iPad family of tablets. Split-screen capabilities have been integrated into tablet from Microsoft and Samsung for quite some time, and both companies have used it in advertising to show that the iPad is not quite up to par when it comes to multitasking duties.
Although the following video is in no way endorsed by Apple, Sam Beckett provided this demonstration of how the functionality could be enabled on iPads.

Now, developer Steven Troughton-Smith has discovered code in iOS 8 Beta 1 that enables multiple split-screen modes on iOS devices. He tweets:
Apple showed off numerous new features built into iOS 8 at WWDC, but the split-screen mode was curiously left out of the presentation. However, it’s possible that Apple is saving the feature for its “One more thing” when the next generation of iPads are inevitably released in the fall.

Apple has bigger problems

I love how fanatics talk about the superiority of Apple's products, and then stuff like this comes out:

"Oops! Tim Cook tweets photo of Mac production line running Windows"

You can't even MAKE a Mac without Windows. :-p

WTF is your point? Apple has never claimed that OSX is optimized for manufacturing environments. They also use Azure as the backend for iCloud.

Apple is about using the best tool for the problem, not insisting that the one tool you happen to be selling should be used for everything --- same philosophy that suggests you're better off buying an iPad AND a laptop than trying to use one device that does both jobs less than optimally...

Anyway, I just thought it was funny that a company with such a closed, er, integrated ecosystem doesn't even have its own tools. Pretty sure MS doesn't code Windows on Macs. Pretty sure the Linux Foundation doesn't code on Windows, either.

what a weird humor. /shrug

Many computer hardware assembly lines have at least one station running Linux, why does it matter?

Grow up. I recall back when I was in the graphics profession that "Windows Magazine" was produced on Macs. Who cares? Virtually all manufacturing software is Windoze based. This isn't news to most of us. At least they are running it on an iMac! It might be a bit more of a story if it were running on a Dell.

All the vendors of the heavy machinery necessary for Apple to manufacture their products use Windows. These vendors aren't going to make a one-off OS X version just for Apple just like how they aren't going to make a Linux version of their software.

I don't quite see the point you're trying to make. That OS X is nonexistent in industrial settings? That OS X doesn't have the market penetration of Windows on the desktop or Linux on the server?

OS X is an operating system that is specifically targeted at consumers before anything else, even Apple recognizes this with their retreat from the server space and the relegation of OS X "Server" to a mere add-on pack (which sucks, just use Linux).

As someone else mentioned, iCloud runs on Azure (as well as on Linux, the horror! /sarcasm).

OMG big whoop

Except it done 100x better in the Modern UI. The modern UI is so nice on a touchscreen device I cringe when I have to use those toys like ipad and adroid.

Did you miss the iPad part? :)

I seriously doubt this is for the iPhone.

I know there are several Android tablets that do split screen.

Too bad Apple invented it. Oh wait... Bwahahahaha!

WEll, be sure to thank Apple for "inventing it" for Samsung and LG before IOS devices. LOL.

But it speaks to a larger iOS device like the iPad Pro

Or a hybrid iOS/OS X relationship... like almost running iOS on a virtual layer. To me the screen increments are odd of 25, 50, and 75% but not 0 or 100% to allow multi-tasking.

0% would be "screen off" and 100% is "one app on screen"

If the screens were co-joined but one at full and the other minimized, would think were still be code to reference that state. Either way, hope this brings a larger screen either in a standalone iPad or hybrid iPad/Mac Air.

Even the iPad isn't wide enough to span the distance between two moving semis.

Do you know that when Apple copy-pastes, their version is so much better. They added an additional split screen ratio for instance. That is why people love when they copy paste.
