Dell Inspiron 530s/531s
New Inspiron deskops join the newly released Inspiron and XPS notebooks

Although Dell's new XPS and Inspiron notebooks are getting the bulk of the attention, Dell has also introduced new Inspiron desktops. The desktops have a new mini-tower design which is 40% smaller than before while still offering excellent expandability.

Dell's new Inspirons are available with both AMD (Sempron, Athlon 64 X2 up to 5600+) and Intel (Celeron, Pentium Dual Core, Core 2 Duo up to 2.13GHz) processors. AMD-based Inspirons uses the NVIDIA MCP 61 chipset while Intel-based systems use the G33 Express chipset. Graphics duties are handled by a 128MB ATI Radeon X1300 on AMD systems and the GMA X3000 on Intel systems.

The new Inspirons support up to 4GB of memory and up to 1TB of HDD storage when both SATA ports are used. Dell also offers its DataSafe image mirroring technology and RAID 0 for those that crave a bit more storage performance.

Optional equipment for the new Inspirons includes an internal WiFi adapter, 13-in-1 media reader, TV tuner and Creative X-Fi audio solutions.

Dell gives customers the choice of Windows Vista Home Basic or Windows Vista Home Premium for their operating system -- Ubuntu Linux is also available, but is only offered on the Inspiron 530.

Dell's Intel-based Inspiron 530/530s and AMD-based Inspiron 531/531s start at $349 and come with a one-year limited warranty.

Not Bad

Almost seems like a decent machine. Of course, you will still have to reinstall the OS to kill the spyware and free trial crap.

WOW this is kinda weird...this is the first time dell has made a desktop in the "inspiron" branding. Historically Inspiron was used for their slightly cheaper laptops.

Dell also said it would phase out its Dimension brand, used for its desktop computers for more than a decade, and switch to the Inspiron name previously used only for its notebooks. The company will continue to sell Inspiron notebooks.

Instead of reloading your OS, you should try out "PC Decrapifier" located at http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/ - much quicker and easier than an OS reinstall. Just a thought. ;)

while the decrapifier is good I rely on Ripley's advice when it comes to Dell OS's: "Nuke it from orbit. Its the only way to be sure."

Has Dell finally learned?

This is the first non-ugly Dell computer I've ever seen. In fact, I might even go so far as to say it looks... nice.

Perhaps Dell has finally learned that consumers don't want to buy a PC that looks like it was designed in 1998?

The "Inspiron 530" seems to just be what would have been called the "Dimension 530" traditionally-and personally I like the "Dimension" name a lot better, but that's no big deal.

At any rate, for anyone interested in games the XPS 410 is still a much better deal. (The XPS 410 is what used to be the high-end Dimension-it would have traditionally been named a Dimension 9300 or whatever number we'd be at now, while these new Inspirons would be the Dimension 5400 or whatever)

Yeah, the xps 410 makes a good gaming system.

These look more like the XPS 200/210 systems though, not so much the E520/E521.

Why no Ubuntu on the AMD-powered 531s? Makes no sense that you have to step up to the $449 price point for Ubuntu on the 530n. If the $50 price difference between Windows and Linux still applies, Dell could sell a 531s with Ubuntu for $299. That'd sell like hotcakes.

Nice Notebooks

I didn't realize Dell had release new notebooks as well. Just went to their site to check them out, they look very nice. I'm glad they finally got the Mobile Geforce 8600GT in.

The good thing is my family is military so I buy one of these notebooks from aafes.com and have it tax free, plus it's cheaper....saves a few hundred bucks.

Meh design overall

Speaking as someone who just finished the "training" on how to take apart the chassis for the Slim tower and the mini tower I can tell you right now when they say budget they aren't kidding. All the screw less designs are totally gone from these new systems. We are back to screws to hold the side panel on, 4 screws to hold the hard drive into place.
Is it a big deal? Not really I guess. Just that they have take some of the ease of use out of it.
