This could eventually lead to new measures against Google

China believes Google and its Android operating system have too much of a pull in the country's smartphone market, and while it hasn't directly mentioned regulatory actions, things could eventually go in that direction.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology authored a white paper that said Google's Android operating system is taking over China's smartphone industry. It even said that Google has discriminated against Chinese companies in the past.

"Our country's mobile operating system research and development is too dependent on Android," said the white paper. "While the Android system is open source, the core technology and technology roadmap is strictly controlled by Google."

The White paper described how Google discriminated against certain Chinese firms when they tried to make their own operating systems by putting off the sharing of necessary codes.

The paper didn't mention any regulatory actions or other measures, but did praise Chinese companies like Alibaba Group and Huawei Technologies. This could mean that, at some point, the country could try to take action against Android in order to promote Chinese companies and their technologies.

Google and China have had an interesting relationship in the past years. In 2010, the two were warring over Chinese hackers accessing Google servers and email accounts. From there, Google threatened to uncensor its search results -- and China heavily censors the Internet.

Oddly, Google made a huge effort to expand in China just one year later. It added new sales staff to its offices in China and targeted businesses that wanted to advertise on its web pages.

Android is open source. If they don't like Google lording over it, they can just grab the source and fork it. That's what Amazon and Barnes & Noble did for the Kindle and Nook.

Of course they'll lose out on new improvements to Android added by Google, but that's the price you pay for forking it and making your own version that you fully control. It's rather unreasonable to fork it so you have full control over it, but expect Google to help you to improve your code for free.

They have done this already.. China Mobile's OPhone...of course Baidu Yi and Aliyun OS. I'm sure there are others...

All these forks did was take the code, change the UI and bam, 'new OS'

You must take a bow to the Chinese, always finding an opportunity to use "foreign technology" as a basis to produce their own native technology.

Better than opening the doors and allowing foreign companies to come in and take over the joint.

I totally agreed with China. All foreign technology should be ban because it threatens PRC communist party and the welfare of Chinese people.
Go ahead and ban Android and IOS and develop a new OS that the government can hack information from all users. Force all manufacturers to make the new device and everyone would be left with no choice. Do It!

The shitty Chinese made crap today is worse than the cheap Chinese stuff they made 10 years ago.

It seems that everything is designed to turn into garbage quickly.

I've bought a new toaster from Target. Looks great. Nice big buttons and lever. The Bella Dot series (comes in 8 colors: red, white, green, etc) It has settings 1~10. The POS burns toast BLACK on a setting of 5! WTF does it do on 10? Burn down the house?

It still burns toast on 3. Okay... bad toaster, get another one.

If its not toasting half the bread (same on both sides... but lower half is more toasty than the top) - its burning the damn bread at 2~3 setting?! Why the hell bother with this crap?! yep, I'm taking it back too. Oh "made in CHina"

Sunglasses... I've had them last for years until I break them or lose them. I usually always paid about $5~10 for a pair. Last few I bought (with MSRP of $10~25) - some namebrand even... have fallen apart after a few days or weeks!

Keyboards, even the $10~15 ones for HP that I bought for clients 6~10 years ago... are better than todays $15~60 keyboards?! With tiny little feet that break. No solid body for angle.

And if you care to look... they use STICKERS for letters! They used to be made by 2 molds of plastic or at least a painting system. Thus, as the keys wear down from usage, the letters would be there!

With todays STICKERS... it doesn't take much to rub off the letters. My 1995 era keyboard (not even a PS2) has keys that look NEW. Yeah, its a bit loud - but my $22 keyboard from 1995 is better than the $60 shit made today.... and when it dies, I've be screwed and will have to buy a crappy "modern" keyboard.

LOL, I bought one from Target too. Different make and model, but still Chinese made. Literally, the 2nd time it was pressed to make its 2nd batch of toast, the lever broke right off.

It's hit or miss. If you buy cheap, you get cheap. But I get lucky now and then. Like for example, I bought a pair of over the ear headphones for $17 and they sound like $99 headphones. Been going good for over a year now. I also bought a mouse made by iHome for $10 and it's the best mouse I have ever owned. That too has lasted over a year so far. Both made in China.

I've bought toasters in the past for $10~15, generic Sunbeams and whatnots... that lasted for years and could actually (get this) Toast that damn bread.

The problem is that China manufactures to the specifications of their contractor. If the toaster maker gives them a crap design then they churn out crap. Because its cheap. High quality goods are made in China like steel, cameras, laptops, phones like the iPhone and galaxy etc.... you could absolutley make.cheap crap in america too like older ford cars. But its more cost effwctive to have a lot of stuff made in China.

It seems to me that the MORE socialized/communized and/or fascist a country is, the more it cries foul on the world stage.

Iran, N.Korea and China seem to bitch the most. Russia is next. Then the eurozone. The USA somewhat less than that. In fact, the only "complaining" I've seen recently from the USA is to publicize the pervasiveness of Chinese hackers--which is hardly being pulled out of thin-air.

I maintain that a lightly-regulated free-market is the key to consumer choice, personal freedom, and economic progress.

China hates Google because China isn't the one that controls the Android OS. There is nothing communist, socialist, or even capitalist about it. It's all about power and control here.

None of the countries you mentioned including the U.S. have anything close to a "lightly-regulated free-market"...

I didn't say they did. I also know that the LESS regulated a country's economy is...the more it tends to thrive. Companies like having freedom to operate.

And I stand corrected. I should have referred to Russia as a legalized dictatorship, and China as an oppressive plutocracy with a stranglehold on censorship.

Is that better?
