AMD's desktop roadmap looks a little empty for 2008

AMD guidance claims the Phenom 9900 and 9700 will launch (or re-launch in the case of the 9700) in Q1 2008.  The frequency replacement for the 9900 will eventually launch in Q2 2008.

Phenom Desktop Quad-core 2008

9900 2.6 GHz 140W

2.4 GHz 125W

9600 2.3 GHz 95W

2.2 GHz 95W

AMD's Phenom 9700, 9900 and eventually 9xxx successor will all use the full 4000 MHz HyperTransport 3.0 bus.  All five Phenom CPUs will top out at DDR2-1066.

According to one review, the "fix" makes Phenom about 20% slower than without the "fix". Some apps, like Firefox, run 57% slower.

Calling this one issue a "bug" is a nice way of saying "the chip is busted".

Of course the Barcelona/Phenom is riddled with bugs, not just this one chip killer.

The real problem is that AMD is way behind schedule. What AMD is rushing to market are design prototypes, not polished production designs. So there are many issues, the bulk of which have not come to light because only AMD partners are seeing them right now due to early access.

AMD should issue a public apology and officially postpone Barcelona/Phenom to 2H08 when the Barcelona redesign is supposed to be finished/ready.
