ASUS' Eee PC 8G due out before year's end

ASUS continues to rack up sales of its popular Eee PC 4G and 4G Surf. The 2-pound sub-notebook starts at $349 and comes equipped with 512MB of DDR2 memory, a 4GB solid-state disk (SSD), a 7" 800x480 display and a 900MHz ULV Celeron processor.

The 4G and 4G Surf are about to be joined by another, more expensive model. The new Eee PC 8G ups the ante with an 8GB SSD and 1GB of DDR2 memory.

Dynamism shows the price of the new 8G model at $499 with availability in mid to late December. ASUS gives the users the choice of Pearl White or Galaxy Black with the 8G.

It will be interesting to see how the market accepts a $499 Eee PC. The $499 price point is still hundreds of dollars less than the cheapest 12" ultra-portable notebooks and UMPCs on the market, but $399 appeared to be the sweet spot for the Eee PC.

In other Eee PC news, Mobile O1 has posted pictures of the upcoming green model. Unlike the Pearl White and Galaxy Black models, the entire notebook casing is not molded in the same color -- instead, only the LCD lid is molded in green while the rest of the body (including the keyboard) is molded in white.

The new green option will be joined by a sky blue and pink options in 2008.

I think people are forgetting
1,2,4GB of memory is a ridiculously high number.

A computer should need more than 512MB of ram to browse the web and use Word processors comfortably.

These laptops are using a barebones/optimised Linux and OpenOffice
which will happily run on 256MB or less of Ram.

Installed probably uses a 1/4 of the HDD space required by Windows XP+Office (2-3GB) and 1/10 of Vista+Office (5-10GB)

How big are word Documents on a 4GB drive?
I'm sure a few semesters work will still fit on these little toys.

Yeah I still rock an original mac mini that only has 512mb ram and works really well for word and firefox, I can even edit small batches of camera raw files with no problem.
