ASUS' Eee PC 8G due out before year's end

ASUS continues to rack up sales of its popular Eee PC 4G and 4G Surf. The 2-pound sub-notebook starts at $349 and comes equipped with 512MB of DDR2 memory, a 4GB solid-state disk (SSD), a 7" 800x480 display and a 900MHz ULV Celeron processor.

The 4G and 4G Surf are about to be joined by another, more expensive model. The new Eee PC 8G ups the ante with an 8GB SSD and 1GB of DDR2 memory.

Dynamism shows the price of the new 8G model at $499 with availability in mid to late December. ASUS gives the users the choice of Pearl White or Galaxy Black with the 8G.

It will be interesting to see how the market accepts a $499 Eee PC. The $499 price point is still hundreds of dollars less than the cheapest 12" ultra-portable notebooks and UMPCs on the market, but $399 appeared to be the sweet spot for the Eee PC.

In other Eee PC news, Mobile O1 has posted pictures of the upcoming green model. Unlike the Pearl White and Galaxy Black models, the entire notebook casing is not molded in the same color -- instead, only the LCD lid is molded in green while the rest of the body (including the keyboard) is molded in white.

The new green option will be joined by a sky blue and pink options in 2008.

I was hoping for a 10" screen on these laptops. $499 I believe is too much. Granted its portable but you can get a 14" laptop for less.

I'll take a bare bones 10" version, just allow me to add my own ram and sd cards for hd space.
These things balloned from the original $200 price while deflating its features.

That's what I've been saying all along. Even used 12'' ones with far better hardware can be bought for less than that. I've never found my 12'' laptop particularly cumbersome. They also badly need to put a mechanical HDD in that thing. 8gb of storage is not enough for anything these days, especially if you want to watch movies and listen to music on the go.

Looking at the Anandtech dissection of it, looks like some parts like the HDD can be upgraded with off the shelf stuff but I think it voids the warranty.

I agree with one of the other comments. The mucous colour is not attractive. What's with hardware makers using all these ugly pastel colours lately?

Yup, I picked up a pair of used 12" P4 laptops that would blow these away last week for half the price.

For what you get, $500 is way over priced on these.

I'm guessing he got the P4 because no one wants it anymore, making it very cheap.

No one wants a P4 but you want a PIII/Celeron based Eee PC running at BELOW what it's supposed to run at? Lay off the crack pipe.

Rarely are there "be-all.....end-all" types of products.

This is a niche product. For those who want an ultra-light portable, this is a great product that allows almost any common applications to be run, such as email, word, excel, photos, etc and still has decent battery life. For those who want more power, play 3D games and manage 100Gb of music and photos, then......this isn't for them.

I'd personally never pay $400 for this, since I don't mind lugging my 17" laptop around. But I also appreciate there are more frequent travelers who desire that level of portability without having extreme processing capabilities.
