Wal-Mart customers who purchase an 80GB PS3 will instantly receive 10 free Blu-ray movies.

Customers will also receive five additional titles via mail-in rebate from Sony.

Wal-Mart to give customers 10 free Blu-ray movies instantly; five more come via MIR

If you thought that Wal-Mart and Best Buy’s $98 Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player was the last outrageous next generation format promotion that we'd see for a while, guess again. Whereas Toshiba, Wal-Mart and Best Buy successfully dumped the discontinued HD-A2 on the market, Wal-Mart's new promotion will take a slightly different approach.

According to a posting over at Blu-ray.com, Wal-Mart is having a Blu-ray promotion from 8AM this coming Saturday until midnight. Customers who come in to purchase a $499 80GB PS3 will be given ten Blu-ray movies for free -- instantly.

Keep in mind that the ten free titles from Wal-Mart are in addition to the five free titles that you can already receive direct from Sony via mail-in rebate. Unfortunately for the ultimate bargain shoppers, it appears that Wal-Mart's ten free Blu-ray promotion won't extend to the new entry-level $399 40GB PS3.

There's only one stipulation that customers have to adhere to in order to receive the 10 free movies: all titles must be priced below $30. Also, to ensure that stores don't run out of Blu-ray movies, Wal-Mart is taking some extra precautions.

“For those stores that carry BD already, additional titles are being sent in for the sale," according to Wal-Mart employee Vonscoot. "For those that do not have BD in their store (a small minority) product will be sent to each store specifically for this sale."

Vonscoot goes on to add that Saturday's Blu-ray promotion is one of four planned "Secret Sales" for the 2007 holiday season. There will be a link posted on Wal-Mart's site detailing promotion this Wednesday similar in fashion to Wal-Mart's last Toshiba HD-A2 promotion.

Deal on a failure?

Giving away all those free movies that in another year they won't be able to sell is pretty clever.

PS3 is destined to come in 3rd behind WII and 360. All the promos wont' fix that. They are so far behind that gimics like this will only move a few extra thousdand. The reason is unlike the price drop that can move hundreds of thousands, each store will have like 5 PS3s at this price and we'll hear about people fighting over it giving the impression of hide demand ( nice try howie and jackie ), but the bottom line no games, technology no one will pay for, busted BR strategy, and being last will guarantee PS3 will come in last.

Rate me down but you can't change the trend of large numbers. Unless every PS3 goes out with many many free movies you'll never see PS3 catch the 360
