Toshiba HD-A3 HD DVD Player
Best Buy brings Christmas early to some customers

Best Buy often gets a reputation of not having the best customer service and looking down on "devil customers" who only come to Best Buy locations to score hot deals.

Over the past few years, Best Buy has done much to better its image. The store ditched mail-in rebates which many customers complained about -- all Best Buy merchandise now carries instant savings instead.

Best Buy's latest move, however, may be one of the best yet for "devil customers."
It was reported yesterday on DailyTech that Wal-Mart would have the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player on sale for $98.97 Friday morning. Best Buy followed suit by offering the HD-A2 online and in-store for $99.99.

As one might imagine, Best Buy stores were quickly depleted of stock and was hammered with excess orders. Although some orders were able to get through, an overwhelming majority of customers who purchased HD-A2s from received backorder notices.

Given that the HD-A2 is now discontinued, one would have expected that Best Buy would just cancel all of the orders and be done with it -- but you would be wrong. Best Buy instead is replacing all backordered HD-A2 players with the new third-generation HD-A3 which retails for $299.99.

A letter sent to Toshiba HD-A2 customers reads as follows:

Dear Valued Best Buy Customer,

You are receiving this email because you recently ordered a Toshiba HD DVD Player (model # HD-A2) from and your order was placed in a backorder status while we awaited additional inventory. Unfortunately, the manufacturer has discontinued this item and we are not anticipating receiving any more inventory.

Because we value your business, we will be fulfilling your order with the next generation Toshiba HD DVD Player (model # HD-A3) that is replacing the HD-A2 in Toshiba's lineup of HD DVD Players. There is no need for you to do anything to receive this upgraded model. We will simply fulfill your original order and your packing slip will be updated to show you received the HD-A3 and serve as your order receipt.

If you are not interested in receiving the Toshiba HD-A3 as a replacement for the discontinued HD-A2, you may return the unopened item to your nearest Best Buy store or simply contact one of our Customer Service Representatives at (888)-BestBuy for more information about how to return the product for a complete refund.

Please accept our apology for any inconvenience. We look forward to your next visit to Best Buy.

Those persons who were sad to get a backorders notice should be delighted that they will be receiving a brand new third-generation unit instead.

The excitement should build even further considering that all third-generation Toshiba HD DVD player (including the HD-A3) come bundled with "300" and "The Bourne Identity” in addition to the five free movies that can be had after a mail-in rebate [PDF].

Guess what, you can do that right now. If you have good credit, you can apply for a Sony credit card and get a $100 credit on your first purchase if accepted. Then you get some sonystyle points which are worth a few blu-ray movies. And you can still get the 5 free movies since it's a blu-ray player. Definitely a great deal if you're into both games and movies and like the simplicity of one hookup like me. This deal has been posted several places, just not DT for obvious reasons.

couple of points against this however...

requires good credit - may exclude some with only moderate credit and or without the means to secure credit with sony on other basis such as debt to income ratio. this problem is the worst possibly, because those living on the margin are the ones who would need the unit to be as cheap as possible to afford it.

sonystyle points require a purchase using sony credit, and can only be applied to further sony products. so when you want that one killer app that finally appears for the ps3 your style points won't help you. also the extra movie or 2 you get still doesn't offset the added cost of this method of credit purchase unless you pay off the total purchase in under 6 months as the interest alone will negate the free movie offset.

and you stated you get to have a unit that performs 2 tasks as one. i am assuming you meant gaming and high def disc playback of movies. if sony's playstation formats had any games i'd even be willing to play then the dual nature might take effect but in actuality i prefer first person shooters and playing those with a joystick sucks balls. and yes there are keyboard and mice for the ps2 and ps3. they don't work in socom or resistance etc... the only halfway decent 1st person shooters on the playstation systems. lame fairy meets oversized sword carrying anime hero type fanatsy games are definately not for me. fighting games are okay but look tons better on xbox anyway so forget those. so what's that leave in game play? racing games? project gotham racing is better than most sony titles and gran turismo is still n/a.

so you pay $300 for a game system plus high def video disc player. not to mention you lowered your credit score by applying for another card that can only be used for sony stuff in the rewards points. when if i want to watch high def movies i can just pay $100 and get 9 free films vs $300 and worse credit and 7 "free" films.

sounds like a winner to me.

and no i am not purchasing nor do i own any xbox based system or wii or ps series stuff. my last video console was a jaguar and man did i pick the sure winner there :)

and yes the dual in one option was your preference i realise. as mine is a player in front of the t.v. and games in front of my computer monitor.

LOL, I can't believe you just went on a rant against this. I already stated the conditions of the deal, and you start making "points" against it. I don't know about other people, but I am not an idiot when it comes to money. I never use credit to pay for things that I don't have money for. The only items I make payments on are my car and my house. In other words, I have $400 upfront and can get $100 off and even more free movies with this credit card deal. Period. Getting the credit card does not inherently result in me paying interest, me beginning to use the credit card for other things which offset the deal, grieving at the thought of not being able to get non-Sony rewards from a Sony credit card (lol?), etc.

Otherwise, I'm glad you shared your PC-fanboy opinions on consoles and why this isn't worth the extra $200 for you. Congratulations on getting the $100 HDDVD deal, I heard 90% of people didn't. And enjoy Soul Calibur 4 on your PC and the hundreds of other new titles that never make it on the PC due to the PC's inability to promise user ownership of a gamepad. The PC shelf of Sims expansions, MMORPGs, and FPS/RTS from two years ago looks mighty interesting, I must say. Then again, it has to be when you plunk $300 down on a video card alone.

The PC still has plenty of titles of interest.

Call of duty 4
Age of Conan (which I am personaly waiting for)
Supreme Commander
C&C 3
Team Fortress

Those are just a few modern and upcoming titles that come to mind. I have a PS3 as well, there are styles of games that just don't work on the PC, mainly fighting games, or platformers like Ratchet and Clank. However I much prefer the idea of playing MMO's and FPS games on my pc. Which I do.

It's fine to like consoles, Fine to like the PC, I use both now. Theres no reason to try to shoot down either of them as a bad platform based on personal preference.
