Toshiba says no to Xbox 360 HD DVD inclusion
Last Friday, Australian website
claimed to have word from a Toshiba representative saying that Microsoft and Toshiba are working on an Xbox 360-based entertainment machine that will
incorporate an HD DVD drive
The information ran contrary to what Microsoft has said in the past regarding the never including an HD DVD drive in the Xbox 360 for cost reasons, and that DVD media is still perfectly adequate for this generation of games.
The speculated machine discussed last week, however, supposedly would not be a strict gaming machine, but rather a home media box.
spoke with a local Toshiba contact regarding the report and received a denial of development for any such product. “It’s got nothing to do with us,” said the Toshiba representative. “But we know Microsoft doesn’t want to include the HD DVD drive so as not to limit the user’s experience.”
With the rapidly falling prices of HD DVD hardware, it’s conceivable that Microsoft could add an HD DVD drive in a variant of its Xbox 360 console at minimal charge. The added ability to play HD DVD movies would provide a strong bullet point feature to match-up against the PlayStation 3’s Blu-ray Disc playback. Furthermore, with the addition of
HDMI in all new production Xbox 360 consoles
(though still lacking proper lossless audio output), Microsoft’s machine is one step closer to becoming a full-HD DVD standalone replacement.

If you want an awesome HD DVD player...

Come out with one Xbox 360 console. Call it: The Xbox 360. Give it 120 GB HDD, a wireless controller (rechargeable with cable), a headset, an ethernet cable, and your choice between the composite/component cable or HDMI cable. Sell it for $299. Sell the wireless adapter for $49.99 and wireless controllers WITH the rechargeable battery and wire for $49.99. Then come out with a 4 GB memory card for $19.99. This is for those with the core console (idiots) and allows them to play xbox games and download content, maybe even rent movies (at 480p, 720p is roughly 5-8 GB). And for the big finish, sell the HD DVD add-on for $99.99 and comes bundled with 5 movies of your choice. This will put some serious hurt in the competition both big and small.
Oh yeah, sell the 20 GB HDD for $49.99 and the 120 GB HDD for $99.99.

Or you could bundle all that crap together. The drawback is you have to cut corners on memory and the graphics hardware since all the other components together are too expensive to produce as is, but its ok since you have a cpu that will herald the return of jesus. Then you can watch great movies like spiderman 3 once, and then leave your system doing folding@home while you stare at its shiny exterior and fap.
