Flash Based Zune Line Art  (Source: FCC)
Specifications on flash-based Zune leaked by FCC

There has been much talk online recently about the forthcoming Microsoft Zune 2.0 update that is expected any day now. While rumors were circulating about a flash-based Zune, little hard evidence was available other than nebulous statements like competitively priced and capacities similar to other offerings.

While there is still no official word from Microsoft on specifications for the new Zune line, some hard information came across the FCC exhibits today that sheds some light on the flash-based Zune devices. The juicy information about the flash-based Zune was not given thanks to a Microsoft Request for Confidentiality.

The information that was available from the FCC shows a line drawing of the flash based Zune along with labels for the devices labeled 4GB and 8GB. Some were hoping for a 16GB flash based Zune, but at launch it seems 16GB is not meant to be. There is still no word on pricing for the device, but if the line art is to scale, the flash-based Zune is very near the size of the old, skinny iPod Nano.

Heck, I just bought myself a nice present - SanDisk Sansa View 16GB for mere $198 including shipping. Thanks Brandon, nice shot. Sorry Creative, you've been a very good MP3 player maker... in the past.

I haven't trusted SanDisk ever since I bought the Sansa e280 and I was pretty disappointed with the sound quality, mostly the custom EQ and lack of bass along with the choppy navigating. $200 for a 16GB makes me wary, so I decided on a Creative Zen 16GB for $250 since my D2 has not so much capacity even with an 8GB SD card.

I would like to hear from people who use the new Sansa View maybe I'll change my mind.

Link? Haven't found it at "reputable" web sites yet. Its still preorder on Amazon. Didn't see it at NewEgg or Sounds like a great deal, though. WI did check out the Sansa before I bought my 8 GB Nano, but I thought the plastic wheel felt really cheap and would break too easily. I had best buy gift certificates, so price wasn't an issue.

$200 is the MSRP for the 16GB model. The 8GB model is $150.

SanDisk® Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK), the second largest seller of MP3 players in the United States, today announced the new Sansa® View – a video MP3 player with a vast array of features and generous capacity, at an unbeatable price. The sleek-looking Sansa View marries the finest MP3 player attributes with full-motion video support (typically found in larger portable media players (PMPs)), a larger screen, long battery life and generous capacity—all in a thin, easy-to-carry package. Expected to be available in October, the Sansa View will carry a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $199.99 MSRP* for a 16GB** flash-based player and $149.99 for the 8GB, far surpassing the competition with respect to value and price.
