Taking into consideration customer and partner requests, Microsoft will sell Windows XP for another 5 months
In a recent press release Microsoft announced it will
extend sales of its Windows XP
operating system to OEMs and retail channels for five months over the initial end date, through June 30, 2008. The move comes after a great amount of feedback from customers and partners regarding the original end-of-sale date of January 31, 2008.
Mike Nash, the corporate vice president of Windows Product Management, stated, "While we’ve been pleased with the positive response we’ve seen and heard from customers using Windows Vista, there are some customers who need a little more time to make the switch to Windows Vista."
Nash went on to say that Microsoft's original policy of a four-year availability of operating systems to OEM and retail channels had been established in 2002. However, due to the delays in the launch of Windows Vista, Microsoft felt that offering Windows XP for sale for an additional five months would make more sense.
When asked about what Microsoft was hearing in terms of feedback from customers regarding Windows Vista Nash stated, "With more than 60 million licenses sold as of this summer, Windows Vista is on track to be the fastest-selling operating system in Microsoft’s history."
Microsoft's Nash feels that the strong sales thus far are due to the doubling of sales of pre-built desktop and laptop computers bundled with Windows Vista as the primary OS. However, recently Microsoft also decided to offer OEMs the
option to let customers downgrade
from Windows Vista to Windows XP.

Explain this to me please.
You cannot afford even a $500 system to run Vista, however you for some reason can afford to put Vista on your old existing computer?. Two big questions come to mind. HOW and WHY?
I'll tell you the most likely scenario, it's that you want to be able to put a cracked copy of Vista on your old beater. Since if you can't afford to save a little extra for a $500 preloaded vista machine, how the HELL can you afford to spend $200 to buy an os?
Now lets shift gears and assume you are legitimately considering BUYING Vista to put on an old machine. WHY would you even think of doing that? Honestly, it can't run DX10 games and never will, chances are it has a copy of XP on it working perfectly fine. Vista is NOT a good idea in this scenario. Either financialy or technicaly.
Moving on to new computers. You are not going to buy a new machine that can't handle vista, unless you are foolish enough to get some emachines celeron with 256mb of ram. Once you get below the $500 mark you start to get screwed realy fast for low low end crap hardware.
Use your head, save a few pennies a bit longer, buy a $500 compter ( you can even get into a dual core for that ) with vista basic, about a gig of ram and there you have it.
And NO vista basic does not run mediocre on a cheap computer, the computer i use EVERY day at work is a peice, only a gig of ram and onboard video and it runs it FINE, yes thats right 100% FINE. You are beleiving the lies, thats your main problem.
