Another recall from China, and this one has serious medical consequences
Chinese authorities ordered the recall of leukemia drugs, which was reported by the state run media on Sunday, September 15. Specifically recalled were methotrexate and cytarabin hydrochloride,
drugs often used in treatment of leukemia in children under pediatric
treatment protocols.
The drugs were tainted and had been causing serious medical side effects including leg pains and other problems.
A Chinese official stated that China's State Food and Drug Administration and Health Ministry banned the two leukemia drugs after several child leukemia patients who were taking them complained of leg pains and difficulty walking. The official also mentioned that some patients also complained of urine retention.
He said the Health Ministry and drug administration had traced the problems with the drugs to their being tainted with vincristine sulfate, an anti-cancer drug. It is reported that the factories manufacturing the drugs had been closed.
Chinese representatives reported that the government has tracked down or accounted for nearly all of the drugs.
China has been trying to strengthen its image after a massive number of international and internal recalls in 2007. Past recalls have included items contaminated with lead paint, formaldehyde, and magnets in childrens toys.
China's struggles in August were chronicled at DailyTech. August 2007 alone saw the recall of almost 20 million toys manufactured in China.
The Chinese government is starting to take the quality problems very serious. It launched a national public relations campaign in hopes of convincing its citizens that Chinese products will be quality controlled.
This past July, the Chinese government also made a harsh statement when the government executed the country's former top drug regulator after he was found guilty in taking millions of dollars in bribes to approve tainted and low quality products; including antibiotics that killed at least 10 people.
China's certainly is trying to take steps to bolster its quality and image, but with each recall confidence in Chinese manufacturing takes another hit.
