Steve Jobs has a change of heart

Yesterday's announcement of the $200 price reduction for the 8GB iPhone was a shock to the system. No one in the industry was expecting it and customers that had already purchased the machine at the $599 price point were fuming mad. To get an idea about how angry some customers were, look no further than this thread at Mac Rumors which is 1500+ posts long.

Steve Jobs got also got an earful with irate customers and his inbox was overloaded with customer complaints about the $200 price cut after only two months on the market.  In an open letter to all iPhone customers, Steve Jobs expressed his "observations and conclusions."

"First, I am sure that we are making the correct decision to lower the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399, and that now is the right time to do it," said Jobs. "It benefits both Apple and every iPhone user to get as many new customers as possible in the iPhone 'tent'. We strongly believe the $399 price will help us do just that this holiday season."

On the flipside, Jobs was also sympathetic to the outrage expressed by existing iPhone owners. “Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store," Jobs continued.

Jobs noted that more details will be posted next week as Apple and AT&T work out the details of the program.

$100 of in-store credit isn't exactly the same thing as $200 in cold cash, but it's surely better than nothing at all.

Note to all Apple haters

This is the very reason why people are loyal to Apple. The people most of you here call the jobs mob. Apple IS a different company whether most of you are willing to admit it or not.

I've never heard of another company (please correct me if I'm wrong with examples) doing something like this. Apple gets the most satisfaction from its customers according to surveys than all other tech companies. This $100 credit is the exact reason why.

People here who hate Apple just because border on lunacy. It's just a company true, but its a company a cut above the rest. Many of you complained that the iPhone was too much so they dropped the price significantly 10 weeks after release (no funny PS3 Sony price cut games, a real price drop). Then many of you complained that Apple is taking their loyal customers for a ride. Now they are offering $100 credit to EVERY iPhone customer from DAY ONE.

What more does it take to stop the unending complaints and hatred for this company? I just don't get it.

Let's see, a company that decided to fix a major customer/public relations mistake is a "cut above"?

I'd prefer a company not make that mistake in the first place. Like it could not have been predicted that customers who so recently bought these devices might be just a tad bit upset by such an early, steep price cut.

LOL, enjoy your Apple-flavor Kool-Aid.

What early adopters of tech don't get screwed in the long run as far as price? Blu-ray and HD-Dvd are a great example. It happens. It's the price you pay for being the cool kid on the block.

The difference is that a lot of other early adopters don't care who's tech it is they just want to be first. But with Apple many of these people bought out of loyalty in a brand. Their dissatisfaction is from being taken for that loyalty to a brand, not being first.

And "being taken" with a almost perfect 50% gross profit margin on the iPhone wasn't a big clue in? It should have been obvious that a price cut would of been happening sooner rather than later with that kind of markup, although this soon is a big surprise I will admit.

I think most peoples' complaint is that the "long run" was a lot shorter than they expected.

No one expects the price of their new, flashy gadget to remain constant forever. I'm more into console games than cutting-edge cell phones, so the hypothetical that pops into my mind is Sony dropping the price of the PS3 by $200 just after Christmas last year. The poor bastards who had camped out and shelled out the big bucks for a PS3 would've been livid.

People like you kissing the ground Steve walks on doesn't help.

A $200 dollar price cut on a just released product.. a $200 dollar price cut after all the Apple Loyalists just bought it.. in fact, in this case, most of the hate is coming from these Apple fans themselves. It is a bit funny how quickly they turned to bite the hand that feeds.

Most of the hate is coming from forum trolls. Over on the Apple Support forum, there are a tremendous number of posts from new users that have never posted before. While I suppose they could be from legitimate users that signed up to express their feelings about being screwed, I am guessing the bulk are from people that don't even own iPhones.

You don't have to experience or own something yourself to tell others they have just been bent over, and you know the rest.

I never like Apple products, but I don't see me signing up to complain. Why waste my time?

Yet you came to this site, look at the postings, then then placed a comment. Why did you waste your time? Isn't this all just hypocritical?

I agree it was cool of Apple to offer $100 creds... but that does NOT make Apple a cut above. Apple is a corporation, and ONLY did it to save future "early adopter" sales. If they didnt, the next overpriced overhyped gadget to come out would not sell as many units until that 1st big price drop.

As far as Steve Jobs in concerned, he is still a maniac, and a complete ass at that. I know people that work at Apple, and he is known for cornering employees that he has never even met,in elevators and crawling up their asses... "What are you doing right now to make this company money", and berating them verbally in other ways. Total megalomaniac.

ya, the more people you know in the Silicon Valley that have actually met him, the more horror stories you hear. I am told most Apple employees walk the other way if they see him coming, they do anything to avoid eye contact.

What? So they can get fvcked with the original price, then two months later get fvcked again with a new, lower price for everyone else who was willing to wait?

But hey, we'll apply a little KY, in a $100 credit that can be used to buy more Apple crap (aka crApple). Gee, thanks for the reach-around!! :(

I found this humorous. Don't know why you got rated down.

Does that mean Microsoft are a cut above for extending Xbox 360 warranties and giving refunds to people who paid for out of warranty repairs?
Or Blizzard are a cut above to giving people extra playing time when WoW servers go down?

I think this is a slightly different situation.

It's been 60-70 days TOPS since the release of the iphone..most "popular" electronic devices do NOT get a price cut this soon after release..

..especially one of this magnitude. I mean a price cut is one thing, and we come to expect it on most everything we buy given enough time (as is par for the course for most electronic devices)..

..but to cut the price by 33% so soon after release is unheard of.

If the iphone was selling as well as expected or proclaimed I see no reason why Apple would cut the prices so drastically. The MEGA successful iPod NEVER saw a price cut like this.

Granted the cell phone business is a constantly evolving and ever changing beast, but still I don't recall any supposedly successful pricey cell phones being cut so soon after launch.

I can definitely see why customers would be upset. I would be too..

..if I could afford a $600 (well $400) phone...

My two cents,
Kevin

Watch your and my ratings go down - fscking Crapple zealots are quick to push that downrate button, for anyone who doesn't worship The Cupertino Liar. Remember that yesterday's "WE MADE FIRST PLAYER WITH WEB BROWSER, EVER"? The fruity clown continues to fsck his users and they DO enjoy this. They just love the clown's lies and stupid shows. Good for them.

Not that MS screwing PC gamers with Vista "games" like Halo 2 is any better than this fruity piece of fertilizer, they also lied and lied (remember WinFS?), so, well... now both Crapple and MS zealots will downrate me. Whatever.

Gosh, I sound like these crazy guys BeenThere and cornfedone. Gotta be more forgiving, it's just a fscking business after all. Make money, screw some customers in the process, maybe. Everyone does or did that. I don't know any large company who has always been crystal clear and honest and sh1t. Capitalism is dirty by definition.

Why not just give them a $100 rebate? Because with the crazy markup in Apple branded products that $100 will really only cost them around $50. So, your $599 i-phone is really $549. Would have been much better to wait and get the $399 8gb being sold today. The profits on the units were already over $300 on the $599 models, so why not give the people a rebate? I guess the rebate is better than nothing.

I honestly think Apple shouldn't give anyone a rebate because they are the lemmings who went out and bought it as soon as they could. All those idiots who were proud to be Apple fanboys talking about how they would not be able to pay rent for the month but they would get to own an i-phone. These are the people that buy Apple equipment? That doesn't sound very smart at all.

I made some typos.... meant "I guess an in store credit is better than nothing".

The rebate would cost aapl $100 where the in store credit really only costs aapl around $50. It looks good to the public but they don't have to pay as much.

I am no Apple fan boy, but if they forked over $200 cash for every phone sold to date I would go buy one out of respect. It would set a precedent though and really cause them some problemas. Not to mention the stock would drop like a hot rock.

Uhh, Daven, the reason you think Apple is a great company is wrong. Correcting your mistakes isn't as good as not screwing your customers over with shady quality, highly overpriced products to begin with.

Apple is anything but loyal to its customers. They lost my 15 years of support when they switched to Intel. Motorola and IBM were doing just fine for them, and considering x63 code can be recompiled effortlessly to Cell architecture, Apple should have just stuck with them.

Could you imagine how well MacOS/Linux would run on a 64-bit multi-core cell platform when you take the raw graphical and FPU power into account. Sure, it isn't great for Windows, but christ just look at PS3's linux numbers when used with an optimized kernel.
