Microsoft's White Zune hit a low of $149 in late August
Microsoft cuts $50 from the Zune's MSRP

Everyone is waiting anxiously to hear what Apple has in store for consumers tomorrow. Most expect a completely revamped line of iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano and iPod players. Rumors range from widescreen video playback for the Nano to WiFi and a 3.5" multi-touch screen for the regular iPod.

Microsoft is looking to make some waves of its own tomorrow with the announcement of a price drop for its also-ran Zune music player. The price of the Zune will drop from $249 to $199.

The player, which was introduced in November, features a 30GB HDD, 3" display, limited WiFi connectivity and an FM tuner. The Zune was originally launched in White, Brown and Black, but eventually expanded to include Baby Pink and Watermelon Red. Microsoft also released two special edition Zunes based on the Halo franchise – and we can’t forget the 100 Pink Zunes that Microsoft unleashed during the initial roll-out of the Zune.

It's still anyone's guess whether the lower price tag will help to spur Zune sales. Many retailers have advertised Zunes at or around the $199 price tag for months. Woot.com recently had the White Zune on sale for $149 and it took nine hours for the Internet Ferengi to purchase 6,300 units.

Refurb Zunes with a part # starting with 4MO have been selling under 200 for quite some time. MS also offers a reduced price academic model and their standard model. As of Today, prices on the more expensive standard models have now been reduced to the 199.00 retail level. FWIW...

My only gripe with the damn thing is it still doesn't play nice with windows MCE...
