Small PlayStation 3 firmware update improves play of PS2 games

Sony last night quietly released a small firmware update for the PlayStation 3, bringing it from version 1.90 to 1.92. The small two-hundredth of an addition apparently only updates the PS3’s backwards compatibility status.

According to the PlayStation 3 update page: “New for 1.92: Playability status with the PS3 system has changed for some PlayStation 2 format titles. To check on the latest status, visit the search site for compatible titles (coming soon).”

Although Sony’s update stated that the search site would be coming soon, a quick search revealed an updated backwards compatibility site that will return differing results depending on which hardware model of PlayStation 3.

It’s also unclear if the new 1.92 firmware update applies to the backwards compatibility status of the 60GB or 80GB consoles. The two models differ in hardware version, with the newer 80GB model being without certain PS2 chips related to backwards compatibility functions.

For gamers interested in playing their classic PS2 games on the PlayStation 3, purchasing a 60GB machine may be preferable – while supplies last.

Yeah really. That's the only reason I still have my PS2. Although apparently import PS3 games work. I've yet to try though.

PS3 games from other regions will, I have a friend who imported Hot Shots 5. I sold my modded PS2. But lately I've been jonesing for some Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike.

I gave away my Japanese PS2, since I have a Japanese PS3. PS2 games work great on it. I still keep my US PS2, since I need to play those PS2 games somehow.

Wish they'd come out with a firmware update that makes PS2 games on the PS3 region free.
