Small PlayStation 3 firmware update improves play of PS2 games

Sony last night quietly released a small firmware update for the PlayStation 3, bringing it from version 1.90 to 1.92. The small two-hundredth of an addition apparently only updates the PS3’s backwards compatibility status.

According to the PlayStation 3 update page: “New for 1.92: Playability status with the PS3 system has changed for some PlayStation 2 format titles. To check on the latest status, visit the search site for compatible titles (coming soon).”

Although Sony’s update stated that the search site would be coming soon, a quick search revealed an updated backwards compatibility site that will return differing results depending on which hardware model of PlayStation 3.

It’s also unclear if the new 1.92 firmware update applies to the backwards compatibility status of the 60GB or 80GB consoles. The two models differ in hardware version, with the newer 80GB model being without certain PS2 chips related to backwards compatibility functions.

For gamers interested in playing their classic PS2 games on the PlayStation 3, purchasing a 60GB machine may be preferable – while supplies last.

Getting an 60 GB PS3 in most places means the same as the 80 GB one in the US when speaking about backwards compatibility.

I'm pretty sure the DailyTech is read all over so do consider this so no one is wrongly informed. It's bad enough we pay $$$ extra for our stuff :-(

Sad face right back at ya buddy. I hope that they bring down the prices elsewhere (though to be fair, it is more the taxes of that country's fault that make it so expensive, however Sony should bring down the price a bit to compensate). Hopefully the analysts' predictions on an 80GB PS3 price drop to $499.99 in the States when the 60 GB model is finished will occur, thus increasing sales and pushing a price drop of the console in other countries.

I'm pretty sure DailyTech is based in Raleigh NC much like Anandtech so it is only natural for news items to be posted from an american perspective...
