Hardware Intel Readies Desktop Penryn Models

Nine new models for desktop processors

Intel’s latest roadmap reveals frequencies of upcoming desktop Penryn family processors. Intel has nine desktop Penryn processors in the pipeline with clock speeds set for seven of the new models. Four of the upcoming desktop Penryn models are quad-core Yorkfieldwhile five of the models are dual-core Wolfdale.

Intel has set the clock speeds for three of the upcoming Yorkfield models. Yorkfield models clock in at 2.83 GHz, 2.66 GHz and 2.50 GHz with 1333 MHz front-side bus speeds. Intel has two different cache sizes for Yorkfield – 12MB and 6MB. The 2.83 GHz and 2.66 GHz models have 12 MB of L2 cache while the entry-level 2.50 GHz model has 6MB.

Four of the dual-core Wolfdale models have clock speeds set in stone. The four models will arrive at 3.16 GHz, 3.00 GHz, 2.83 GHz and 2.66 GHz. All models feature 1333 MHz front-side bus speeds and 6MB of L2 cache. Intel has not set model numbers for the upcoming desktop Penryn processors yet, but all will carry the Core 2 name.

Intel has two additional desktop Penryn models with to be announced, or TBA, clock speeds – a Yorkfield and a Wolfdale. The TBA Yorkfield features 12MB of L2 cache while the TBA Wolfdale features 6MB. Both processors feature 1333 MHz front-side bus speeds. Unique to the two TBA processors is validation for Intel’s Stable Image Platform Program 2008.

Intel has not set a launch date or pricing for its desktop Penryns yet.

That's a pretty fast!
It should be interesting to see how high these higher end ones can overclock with the lower heat and high speeds.

Its looking like Intel is putting together a solid release.

Core 2s overclock so well that it's almost foolish to buy anything but the lowest clock speed. P35 chipset also overclock like champs. Together P35+Penryn should overclock extremely well.

Yeah, I made the mistake of jumping on the X6800 (useless unlocked multiplier, whoo hoo!) before there was a lot of overclocker activity with the lower-clocked chips. :\ Needless to say, I would've bought an E6600 if I'd known.

Ya, I've got my E6600 at 3.33 ghz. It can go higher, but I don't feel like increasing the voltage.

Pretty fast yes, and Intel is holding back at this time. if they had any competition from AMD, they would be releasing it at higher speed bins.

Yeah but these 3.16GHz when overclocked, should be much more than 3.2.

CPU from the same family are manufactured together as the same piece of silicon. They are identical in terms of die.

They are then selectively tested for various clock speed. The ones that passes higher clock speeds are binned with a higher model number.

This mean the lower clock speed model may have same overclocking potential as a higher clock one. The only difference is the higher clocked model had gone through more thorough testing

Correct, but what that means is the average higher binned CPU can usually achieve a higher sped than the lower binned CPU's. There are always exceptions, but in general, thats the rule.

So many details about the penryn to be realeased in q1 08, and so little detail about AMD's Barcelona which is supposed to launch... This month, august? Hey, august is almost turning over! Another miss hit release date for AMD?
Well... By speculating how higher priced penryns will be I finally ditched my Athlon 64 and got a kentsfield. Got tired of waiting for AMD and kentsfield's prices were just too tempting for me to pass it out...

I hear you. I just got 3 Core 2 Quads for the office. I've been with AMD since K7 but I'm back with Intel now.

I'm starting to think AMD shouldn't have bought ATI. They could have formed a close joint-venture with them to develop new platforms. Plopping down all that capital to buy them outright was a risky gamble, which seems to have slowed AMD down to a crawl.

From insiders there were some ATI employees that were made about the take over and caused some massive problems for AMD that lasted weeks. I really can't say what they did though. As far as Barcelona launch date..... it hasn't been August for a while, they pushed it to September 10th.

Tough Decision

Do you wait for a Penryn or get a Q6600 now and OC it to about 3.0 gig?

That is my conundrum and seeing Penryn benchmarks that are only about 5-10% faster, it gets harder.

I guess at the end of the day, I will see how my X2 4200 handles games like UT3 and Crysis when paired with a shiny new nVidia 9x00 video card then decide if I want to wait based on that.

Go with the cheapest prices if you're looking to upgrade now. Penryn isn't significantly faster than Kentsfield with the exception of any software using the new instructions. By the time any Penryn optimizations become mainstream, new architecture succeeding it will be out. If you have a quad core, wait until Nehalem or the AMD Phenom FX quad (depending on how it performs)comes out. Besides Nehalem uses a new socket thereby end-of-lifing Penryn anyway. Also, if you buy a cheap chip now, keep it until Penryn prices drop next year, and upgrade again then by swapping the chip only.

Remember the addage...

The best time to buy any electronics is tommorrow.

There will always be something better around the corner, so buy when you need to. By the time everyone gets comfy with HDTV, there will be quad HDTV. You only have 4 cores.......look at the new 16 core models coming next year.<sarcasm> It never stops, so get what you need, when your time and budget allow.

IF you need to buy, you need to buy. However, if you have the luxury of waiting, the best time to buy is not tomorrow.

Something around the corner ... Something one month away when you don't need something? Wait. Something 6 months away? Well that's a long time to wait and when that six months is over then 6 more months and something new will be aroudn the corner.

It's a case by case basis.

Sigh..........
When will tomorrow come, its always the next day, meaning there is always something better in the future, get it.

Much easier than saying, the best time to buy may be next week, or maybe a month, wait maybe 6 months, etc.

There's always something better around the corner, when do you want to make the plunge.


pricing?

Is it reasonable to expect pricing of the yorkfield 2.5ghz quad to be where the q6600 is now?

doesnt sound like much of an upgrade (+100mhz and a REDUCTION in cache)
So unless there is also a planned price drop, it really does seem like a good time to buy the q6600.

However if intel are able to offer the 2.66ghz 12mb cache version for the price bracket of the q6600 now - that would be pretty amazing.
because that would also mean that the 2.5 ghz version would have to drop to an even LOWER price bracket.




3MB/cost/multis

Im surprised that theres a planned 6MB L2 yorkfield being released. It means that there is a 3MB cache version of wolfdale being readied. Probably for the e1/2/4xx line.

As to the gentleman speaking on pricing, it wouldn't surprise me if the 2.5Ghz ran before the current Q6600 pricing. The 45nm process saves them a lot of die space. And die space directly corresponds to cost (the 12MB yorkfields are likely smaller mm^2 than the kentsfield core is with 8MB of cache.)

And to save others the effort of having to do this
7.5*333 = 2500
8.0*333 = 2666
8.5*333 = 2833

Those half step multiplyers are annoying. To hit 3600 on the 2.5Ghz yorkfield is going to require a 480Mhz FSB. Eeek!

I saw some Yorkfield @ 3,33 Ghz so why the hell will the top of the line just runing at 2,83 Ghz. Since the Qx6850 with 1333 fsb and 3,0 Ghz is out there will be no reason for a normal high end customer to buy one.

OK the Yorkfield will perform much better in overclocking than a qx6850 thought. BUT who tells the customers!!

You can get a quad-core with very low prices... still there's no real support for quad-cores :S
I mean gaming.. I know quads beat duals in non-gaming area, but I don't really care about that.

Hence the reason why I'll stick with the duos for some time.




Penyn and SSE4

I suspect a lot of company are already working on SSE4 Software. That should make the performance advantage number from 5 - 10% to more like 20 - 30%.

Intel is properly reserving Barcelona's performance results before it decide the last 2 model and final pricing.

What i hope is Barcelona turns out to be much better and Intel do a STEEP price cut again :D
