Coming to a retailer near you next month

ASUS plans to begin shipment of its Internet-centric Eee PC UMPC next month, according to an ASUS representative. The company plans to ship the Eee PC to the US, Europe, China and Taiwan in various specifications. ASUS aims to ship 20,000 units in its initial shipment, but plans to top 500,000 units this year. The company predicts an increase of 3-5 million units in 2008.

ASUS previously announced the Eee PC 701 last June during Computex 2007. The small UMPC features an Intel processor and chipset with a 7-inch display, 10/100 Ethernet, 56k modem, 802.11b/g wireless, 512MB DDR2-400 and an integrated webcam. The device makes use of solid-state memory with 4GB, 8GB or 16GB capacities. ASUS claims around 4 hours of battery life from a 4-cell battery with the Eee PC 701.

ASUS plans to ship four different models at $199, $239, $349 and $369 USD price points. ASUS targets the $349 variant towards mainstream markets. The $349 model will make up most of the initial shipments of the Eee PC.

Expect the ASUS Eee PC to begin shipping in the middle of September.

10" Screen On Higher Models?

Yeah, i read on Wikipedia that they were going to come out with a 10" screen version too. If they do, that is the model I will consider getting for myself....

I don't think they'll run WindowsXP. I thought it was an Intel StrongARM CPU?

Nope, it is an x86 CPU

And, besides all that info, ASUS explicitly stated that it can run Windows XP, but is not packaged with such due to cost-cutting. I can't find the DT article that I read, and am too lazy right now to dig it up. Google it, remarkable things can be found-and I am not just talking about how the Core 2 Duo was really AMD's K9, which INTeL stole(don't mind the resemblance to Core or the origional Pentium).

I wonder if you'll be able to swap the most-likely cheap CF card they use with a better/faster one (such as Lexar's 133x line) without voiding the warranty.

I don't think they'll be using cards or anything , at least I hope not. These are too slow , they should use a custom made SSD drive a couple of which are already beginning to appear.

There's no card.

Flash is soldered to the motherboard.

it's seen as a standard ATA hard drive to the OS.

You can add a flash card though, as there's a slot in the side. I wonder if you could turn that into a dual boot configuration via the extra memory. This little machine could be my chance to really give Linux a try. I don't really care about portable power. I've always hated laptops/notebook-computers. But I found the Palm III rather handy for taking notes in class. The battery lasted a week and I had a full sized keyboard. But I had to dump the notes every week for fear of overfilling the memory... the amount of memory on this machine is sufficient for what I need. Anyways, I have my finger itching to order one ASAP. It looks durable and potent enough for my needs... I might even experiment with learning how to run a server.

Are you kidding? I rather this than the POS Toshiba. Which break all the time. And by the way, this is not a UMPC, it's more inline with OLPC or XO or whatever name it goes by now.

You're all wrong.
The EEE PC is not for power users.
It's for somebody like me who eventually will watch a video on the go, open a word document and play mame / scummvm games and do some browsing.

Not everybody wants a notebook with a big hard drive and a quad core cpu whose battery life is less than an hour...

Agreed, amazing how some people think something is a POS just because they have no need or want for it. While I have no need for such a device....My Toshiba M200 does me just fine, for someone on a limited budget or looking for an inexpensive device to keep a kid occupied on a trip this device should do fine.

Agreed, I think this would be a good war-driving packet sniffer. But I still would want the 10" 16GB version. Some of the early 701 photos I saw has an integrated SD slot as well.

Just because something isn't going to triumph in PCMark doesn't make it a POS. You might not have a use for something like this, but again doesn't make it a POS or waste of money.

Sub-standard performance? WTF do you expect for ~$200? I think its around a 900MHz Dothan cored CPU, in which case its more than capable of web browsing and other everyday tasks, especially with the light Linux OS being used. It does have a hard drive - a flash based one, yes its low capacity but its also lightweight, low power and robust - ideal for this device.

Completely agreed...
Besides, if we're talking about lack of performance, then how could this person define the new samsung Q2 UMPC which, with all and 1gb of RAM, is a serious contender to get the "slowest 1000 usd machine you can buy with windows vista preinstalled".

You could compare it to the future coming version of the fujitsu lifebook, but hey, that one will cost almost threefold what this one does!

As for me, I was going to get myself a PDA for my "long trip entertainment" but am holding to the EEE because I find it'll be so much more powerful than a normal pda, yet less expensive and can supposedly run windows XP (it is less portable, but I hope not by such a big margin :D )

It was stupid of them to use expensive ass flash memory. A hard drive would actually provide a usable amount of storage space unlike these teeny-tiny SSD solutions.

Along with increase the size and weight of the over all unit, increase power usage (shorter battery life), and the unit will break down more often. Now you're back up to a notebook, just by adding a hard drive. Understanding how the unit is intended to be used, explains why they used what they used. Business people travel on a plane that want to work on a document, listen to songs, mp3, mp4, watch a movie, light web surfing, check e-mails. Kids in back of car, same idea as above and maybe some small video games you know the 8mb, 32mb, 64mb size not your 8 GB world of war craft. Students could use it to take notes in class and it is small, easy to carry - unlike some notebooks. Mom or Dad could use it to keeps schedules and list of daily activities, make a grocery list that you can add to on the fly…yet small enough to keep in a purse (OK Dad will have to find somewhere else to put it, but you get the idea). This was intended for the everyday average person, not a super power hungry system user.
