Microsoft's Xbox 360 gets its first official price cut

When Sony cut the price on its 60GB PlayStation 3, the industry turned its spotlight on Microsoft for a response. Shortly after Sony's price cut, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter predicted that Microsoft would cut the price of the Xbox 360 Elite, Premium and Core to $399, $349 and $249 respectively.

Shortly after Pachter's comments, Microsoft Game Studios VP Shane Kim hinted that a price cut was indeed in store for the Xbox 360. Kim noted that Microsoft needed to better compete with Wii in the entry-level arena. "We need to compete effectively for that customer and part of that is getting to the mass market price point for the console. We definitely are working on that area," remarked Kim.

"The timing depends on a lot of different factors and we'll just keep evaluating those," added Microsoft's Robbie Bach.

The chatter surrounding the price cuts became deafening once leaked sales flyers for major retailers began hitting the web. Ads for Wal-Mart and Toy "R" Us showed the Xbox 360 Premium priced at $349. One day later, a Circuit City ad was leaked which mirrored the $349 price for the Premium and added $449 and $279 price tags for the Elite and Core respectively.

Today, Microsoft officially announced the price drops for the three existing Xbox 360 SKUs. Beginning August 8, the Elite, Premium and Core will carry an MSRP of $449.99, $349.99 and $279.99 respectively.

In addition, the previously announced Xbox 360 Halo 3 Special Edition Console will be priced at $399.99 when it hits store shelves in September. The Halo 3-themed Xbox 360 features an HDMI port like the more expensive Elite and an "authentic Spartan green-and-gold finish." Microsoft also notes that the console will come with a Play and Charge kit.

Those that rush out to buy the new cheaper Xbox 360s may wish to go ahead and register for Microsoft’s new online service site for the console – it’s likely that you may need it in the future. In fact, many may just simply want to wait until the new Falcon-based Xbox 360s hit store shelves despite the current temptation of lower prices.

I wouldn't buy this defective piece of crap if it were 200 dollars! they rushed it to the market for fear of competition from ps3 and the masses of idiots with disposable income to waste on a product ,that was rushed through testing with KNOWN high failure rates, bought not only one, but two,or even three in some cases, expecting each one to work PROPERLY. this is the most shameful, disgusting, DECEPTIVE product launch in recent history. IMHO, it is still overpriced when compared with all the hassles of product replacement and loss of use of their prepay "live" service. people have been shipping rrod consoles in for repair and getting refurbished consoles back that are older than the ones they sent in. disgraceful business practices! yet and still, the ignorant continue to debate the value of "is it the right time to buy?"! go ahead, buy one. and by all means, throw away the reciept...I dare you. oh but hey, they have a great warranty. the only one of its kind. duh...bet you all voted for bush twice too!

Whew! I about ran out of breath reading that phrase/sentence/jumbled mess. I'll agree that they most likely rushed it to market, and most likely rushed through testing, but you have no idea if high failure rates were "KNOWN". I'm sorry, but a company of Microsoft's size and business knowledge doesn't push out a product (that costs them hundreds of dollars to make) when they would know of any high failures rates during testing. I'm sure they rushed through QC, but you can't say they knew about any failure rates. On the other hand, you can bad mouth their QC process, which apparently missed all of this.

Oh, and it's not very typical for "idiots" to have disposable income. If you have disposable income, you've most likely earned it in some intelligent way.

First of all, if you send your console in for service under warranty, they give you a free month's worth of Live service to make up for time lost. Do your research. And how is product replacement a hassle and a cause for being overpriced when they send a box on their dime, then you ship it back to them on their dime, they fix it on their dime, then they ship it back to you on their dime?

Warranties are just like terms of service. If you don't read and understand them before handing money over, it's your own fault. The 360 warranty is specifically laid out as far as time and the possibility of getting back refurbished units.

hahahaha! Good stuff. First off, you don't need the receipt to take advantage of the warranty on your 360. It's all done by the serial number. Second, I'm sure Bush enjoys his 360 console :P.

The only one ignorant here is you, that's what it boils down to. Let me guess, you typed your reply on your PS3's web browser, huh?
