Sony says PS3 will indeed have a removable HDD storage module but says it will be sold seperately

Sony has now officially stated that its new PlayStation 3 console will have a hard drive option for storing information. Engadget is running an article claiming the HDD unit will be a detachable 2.5" module but unlike Microsoft's Xbox 360, the PS3's HDD unit will slide neatly into the console via a slot that is designed for the HDD module. According to PlayStation.com, the HDD module will be sold separately although no price has yet been set.

No details right now about what sizes will be offered, but with Sony using standard notebook size hard drives, it shouldn't be at all difficult to have the unit upgraded. Also available on the PS3 will be Memory Stick support (standard, Duo, and PRO) via one slot. In fact, the PS3 will read all popular media formats such as SD and CompactFlash types 1 and 2.

2 important things.

1.- that the hdd is removable, dont mean that the ps3 wont sell with one, the memory stick is removable and from my handycam to my psp always get one free.

2.- that image is almost one year old, you can read 2005 all rights reseverd. And most important "Design and Specidications are subject to change without notice".

No your psp didn't come with a free memory stick. You had to purchase a bundle pack for the psp to get the 32 mb memory stick along iwth spiderman 2, costing you 250 dollars.

If you buy the PSP retail, you get a free memory stick. Spiderman 2 only went to the first 1,000(or something like that. Lucky me). However if you buy a used one, one that fell out a truck, or some other kind that doesn't have a box you don't get a memory stick or any of the nifty trinkets that are in a retail box. Also the PSP giga pack exists in which a 1gb memory stick along with more trinkets. As for the HDD, if it does have the a removable slot, I hope its just a normal HDD bay with the connectors inside. Therefore I can buy a huge HDD to put in it. Yet, as an earlier post said, its not definite.

Since Sony is Sony.... you probably can't buy any HD... you will have to buy an approved PSP3 drive.

A co-worker put in a faster CPU into his HP desktop, upon boot up an error appeared "an unauthroized CPU has been installed, the PC will not boot until an authorized CPU has been installed"

And another coworker put a 100gb 7200rpm drive into his IBM laptop.... nope... "non-IBM drive installed, device will not be accessible"

so it would be VERY easy for Sony to prevent such upgrades.....

That's BS. I just put a 100GB 7200RPM in my IBM X31 two days ago and I'm using it to type this post.

BTW, this drive replaces a 60GB 7200rpm drive which replaced the standard 40GB 5400rpm drive. So you can't say it's a fluke.

IBM/Lenovo "fixed" the problem with a firmware update.
1st update would just warn you that non-approved hardware was installed...wait a few seconds, then continue booting.

2nd update, and any after, don't check. Firmware applied to the T, X, and R series laptops with firmware around time IBM sold to Lenovo.

Probably just a realization of how angry PSP owners were about having to buy a Memory Stick Pro Duo almost specifically for the bloody system.

Don't worry, I'm sure Sony will come out with a branded "Sony Memory Compact Flash Ultra Gamerz Card" which will be a regular Compact Flash card that is purple and 3X as expensive as a normal one. ("Sony Platinum xDizzle Stick" to follow)

Yup selling it outside the base package great idea. That'll work out real well.

Unless game devs were told to code and force people to buy the HDD, why would they not bundle it?

they want more money... They can sell the core system for less and charge more for the accessories and make up for the tight margins they make on a base system.

The other possibility is that perhaps only a few games will take advantage of the HDD, as on PS2 - pretty much exclusively FFXI. I really don't like the idea of having to patch console games - that gives publishers the option of rushing out unfinished code, like on PCs.

The three ethernet ports were never dropped. The router functionality which was never confirmed was.

Im whole heartidly blaming microsofts paired down Core system for letting Sony even consider not bundling a hard drive.

PS3 would have been great with a built in hard drive as standard...
