Production of new 2560 x 1600 with DisplayPort to enter production next year

Samsung’s latest 30-inch LCD panel sports a DisplayPort interface. The new Samsung panel can process 10 bits of color depth with 2560 x 1600 resolutions via a single DisplayPort interface. Current high-resolution 30-inch displays required dual-link DVI ports to drive such high resolutions.

Samsung collaborated with Genesis Microchip Inc. to develop the 30-inch display with DisplayPort. The new DisplayPort compatible display features a Samsung Super Patterned, Vertical Alignment, or S-PVA, display with 300 nits of brightness. The panel also features a 180-degree viewing angle.

"We have received many inquiries from computer integrators interested in DisplayPort-based LCD panels, which prompted an acceleration of our R&D for this first DisplayPort LCD panel," said Brian Berkeley, vice president of Samsung's LCD business, in a statement to EETimes.

The Video Electronics Standards Association, or VESA, previously approved the DisplayPort 1.1 standard last April. DisplayPort is set to replace LVDS, DVI and VGA interfaces for computer displays. Other DisplayPort supporters include AMD, NVIDIA, HP, Intel and Lenovo. Dell plans to offer DisplayPort-equipped displays later this year. Intel plans to integrate a native DisplayPort interface in its next-generation Eaglelake chipset.

The problem is that most video cards only ship with a dual link DVI port and a single link DVI port. So not possible to power a pair of 30" LCD monitors. Course if you are rich enough to have a pair of 30" LCD monitors, you should be rich enough to get a vidcard with dual dual link DVI ports, which I'm not even certain they make.

It also supports audio. Also contrary to what someone else said earlier, DisplayPort is a competitor to HDMI. UDI on the other hand is a competitor also, but only for computer connections.

Both DisplayPort and UDI provide the same or higher (in the case of the latter) bandwith. DisplayPort also supports fiberoptics. UDI for the most part is dead.

I am personally looking forward to DisplayPort. It's a smaller cable and connection. Plus the fiberoptics is a huge bonus. All they need is better wireless device ranges and you can keep your PC in a completely seperate room. All you'd have at your computer desk is your keyboard, monitor, and mouse. It's also license free. Course, whether consumers will see a drop in price is up to the manufacturers.

While DisplayPort isn't compatible with DVI or HDMI it does allow pass-through of the signal.

So for all those ppl asking about a convertor type cable, yes, it's possible.

I personally see more positives than negatives for DisplayPort. With AMD, Intel, and Nvidia (just a small list) supporting it, it's inevitable that any other company who wants to stay in the computer business will also start supporting it.

I hope they push DisplayPort hard and fast, cause I'm sick of my stupid DVI cable. I now keep around those stupid little end caps, after multiple pins getting bent. I was going to lan parties just about every weekend and would end up spending a short amount of time straightening out pins every now and again. After some time, I finally got some end caps to protect the ends. Wouldn't have been a problem if they pushed HDMI out faster for comps. Course seems like DisplayPort will beat HDMI to the punch.

HDMI can stay on HDTVs. They're far too ingrained in that field, than they were on computers.

Audio. None of that really changes. Sure it'll support it, but doesn't mean you have to use it. You can still roll with your standard soundcard and connections. You'll just have different connectors and cables for your monitor. For those ppl who buy OEM with built-in speakers on their monitor, they can deal with just a single cable.

What I would like is to have a connection between the vidcard and soundcard to allow the audio to go through the DisplayPort. Then have audio connections on the monitor itself. My monitor sits closer to my stereo, than my desktop sits to the stereo.

Or how about putting out lower power OLED displays and being able to pump power directly through a DisplayPort cable. That would rock. A monitor with just a single cable for power, audio, and video. Then it could wirelessly transmit the audio to my stereo. Oh well, a person can dream.
