sports a DisplayPort interface. The new Samsung panel can process 10 bits of color depth with 2560 x 1600 resolutions via a single DisplayPort interface. Current high-resolution 30-inch displays required dual-link DVI ports to drive such high resolutions.
Samsung collaborated with Genesis Microchip Inc. to develop the 30-inch display with DisplayPort. The new DisplayPort compatible display features a Samsung Super Patterned, Vertical Alignment, or S-PVA, display with 300 nits of brightness. The panel also features a 180-degree viewing angle.
"We have received many inquiries from computer integrators interested in DisplayPort-based LCD panels, which prompted an acceleration of our R&D for this first DisplayPort LCD panel," said Brian Berkeley, vice president of Samsung's LCD business, in a statement to EETimes.
The Video Electronics Standards Association, or VESA, previously approved the

RE: vs hdmi?

Okay, so let me get it straight.
Current video cards ship with DVI and HDMI, because LCD's now use DVI but sooner or later will require HDMI -- which is also meant to join the component, DVI, and other outputs on the back of TV's.
But now DisplayPort will displace DVI and HDMI for computers? What will video cards stuck inbetween generations therefore start to equip -- one of each? One of each plus on extra of what's most popular?
Is there a law on the books where we can execute the idiots in charge of all this? It's not that I mind new standards, it's that I mind transitioning through 3 or 4 simultaneously. There are still VGA monitors out there, DVI will be popular for years, some already are HDCP compliant (did I get that confused with HDMI above?) but some video cards are not, and now we've got HDMI and DisplayPort. And the distinction between home theatre and computer-oriented is a blury one to boot as more and more people enjoy the ability to hook up to TV's/home theatre systems.
And if I get confused, you know six-pack Joe probably already just buys whatever the sales guy at WalMart tells him to.

It's easy to convert between HDMI and DVI. So if you have a video card with DVI and a display with HDMI (or visa-versa), you just need the right kind of cable or adapter.
What I think remains to be seen is if DisplayPort will have similar interoperability with HDMI, DVI, or both.

HDMI also carries AUDIO - display port does not.
Display port will replace VGA and all variations of DVI.
HDMI will continue to be for home theater setups to carry AUDIO and VIDEO.
