Apple has released its warranty for iPhone

With the mad rush to get their hands on the iPhone, fans can now up the protection on the new mobile gadget in their arsenal. Apple has just released its new warranty for the iPhone, the AppleCare Protection Plan.

According to Apple, every iPhone comes with one year of hardware repair coverage and up to two years of technical support. The AppleCare Protection Plan extends the repair coverage to two years from purchase date. Apple-authorized technicians will repair a user’s iPhone or provide a replacement using genuine Apple parts. The plan also covers the iPhone Bluetooth hands-free headset and other included accessories.

For those of you who feel your Apple products are not quite indestructible, this may be a good insurance plan for you. Also, the extra money to dish out is not a bad deal for the first generation iPhone users, who are most likely to encounter problems with their new toy.

There’s bad news, however, for those of you who live in Alabama, Connecticut, Nevada, or Wyoming and have purchased the iPhone. If you place an order for the warranty, Apple will remove it and tell you that they have done so. It seems Apple is not authorized to sell the protection plan to residents of these states.

The AppleCare Protection Plan is available for both PC and Mac and can be purchased for $69. The plan must also be purchased while the iPhone is still under the original one-year warranty.

AT&T handset coverage?

I'm asking cuz I don't know, but Sprint offers replacement/damage insurance for a couple bucks per month. If you lose or break your handset, you get a new one for free. Does AT&T not offer this service for subscribers? Is the iPhone exempt?

Few issues with that, those phone company plans also generally care a deductible in addition to the monthly payment. Sprint's is $8.00 a month for the isurance, then another $50 deductible if you actually need the phone replaced. They won't mention the deductible unless you ask either, by the time you pay the fee and the deductible, you could buy a used replacement off Ebay for half the price on most phones. If AT&T does offer something similar for the iPhone, you'd definately need to read the fine print.

As for the Apple warranty, this just seems like an extended MFG warranty, which I doubt would cover a broken screen from dropping the thing or other likely accidents.

This is just a standard MFG warranty extension and specifically excludes any kinda of accident repairs (section 1.b). Since the most likely problems with Cell phones result from them being dropped or similarly abused, seems like this is kinda worthless for the most part.

One additional year of repair coverage for $69, i'll pass I only pay $4.00 per month beyond the standard warranty
