Nintendominates video game hardware sales for June

The sales numbers released by research firm NPD Group for June continue to highlight Nintendo’s current strength in the market. Both the Nintendo DS and Wii lead all of its competitors in terms of software and hardware sales.

The Nintendo DS collected even more sales than during May, moving an amazing 561,900 units. The Wii followed closely behind with 381,800, also slightly up from the previous month.

Nintendo’s near-obsolete Game Boy Advance sold a surprising 109,400 consoles, despite there being no new software released for the handheld.

Sony took sat next in the ladder, with the PSP selling 290,100 and the undying PlayStation 2 at 270,700 units. The PlayStation 3, which was once again the lowest-selling, current-market console, only managed to sell 98,500 units.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 sold 198,400 units, also up from May’s figures.

Overall, video game hardware sales were up 34 percent for the month as compared to the same period last year – accumulating $398.6 million.

It's a novelty because thats really the only thing the system has going for it. Really, take away the controllers and what do you have left? Absolutely nothing that the Gamecube couldn't have offered.

Well shit, since we're arguing, why don't level the playing field. Take away the graphics of the PS3 or the 360 and what do you have? Absolutely nothing that the PS2 or original XBox couldn't have offered!

BTW the Wii does have internal memory and all the Wii channels. It has wireless capabilities built in, and the ability to download classic game content, and view pictures and send and receive emails. Sure, that may pale to the main draw of the Wii which is the new games that can be created because of the new controller. But the same is true of ALL the consoles!

Yeah but the PS3 and 360 don't use a gimicky control scheme to try to hide the fact that they suck, and have nothing but rehashes of last gen titles (JFC how many versions of Madden could you possible need?). You know they suck. The Wii has everyone distracted with the motion control stuff so they don't know it sucks and that they are just playing pong on a Gamecube.

Oh and it really pissed me off that the sword in Zelda didn't swing the same direction that you swung the Wiimote; it just played a random canned animation when it detected movement on the controller period. So it ended up being like one of those boxing arcade games where you are supposed to be boxing like you're in the game, but instead you just stand there waving your fingers in front of the sensor to throw a punch; You're not swinging a sword, you're just shaking the controller furiously hoping it will swing on screen. Some innovation there. Guess they had to do something with all their warehouse of Gamecube and Powerglove parts.

Gaming hasn't been all that great since the SNES, the greatest game console ever made.
